As a child raised in a northern state, we were habitually taught to infer that southern vernacular was a sign of the unrefined. As a lifelong student of American history, I think a worthy argument can be made that the sins of the 19th century south were just as prevalent in the north yet have been obscured by time and historiography. Any stereotypes are problematic in my opinion. Many cities in the Southern United States have become the cultural meccas for the whole country while northern cities..........get six months of snow. Crazy story...when I was a youngster in school, about ~22 years ago, we'd have to say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. Which I happily did. I just didn't say "under God." I kept my mouth shut when that phrase came. I got detention each week for not saying it. My parents got called. I got my ass beat for it when I got home. Then they eventually were like...yeah...you're not causing a problem. I made straight A's and people who were assholes and disrespectful weren't even getting detention. So the teacher eventually told me it was okay. Ironically, she was also the government teacher. The "social studies" teacher. And also, ironically, she strengthened my resolve by punishing me for my choice of freedom from religion...

And I work with schools for business and know most of the teachers quite well. So I can say that with confidence. As far as the overall state goes...I mean...we just legalized alcohol sales on Sundays last year lol! 😂 Indiana is definitely behind the times. In many ways. But most teachers seem relatively "liberal" (and by liberal, I mean it in the old school sense...open. Not "left.") I never felt pressured in school ideologically or religiously except in this one, very specific situation.

Just be proud to know that after I started doing it one of my good buddies, to this day, also stopped saying "under God." We respect God. And everyone's personal religious beliefs. Theocracy, as an ideology, will persistently attempt to infiltrate secular institutions especially during periods of extreme strife or prolonged ease. Could it be that a part of a very geo-localized population of your country confuses the true American Constitution with the one which was proclaimed in 1861 by the Confederate States, in which the Christian identity of these States is emphasized there?

They really should reissue that coin. I'm so tired of anyone trying to invoke religion when it covers laws meant to reflect every person in that city state or the country. It's not right. Morally it goes beyond what the founders wished and planned to represent the country as. I don't care what theological beliefs you have as long as you do not hurt someone by following them. That's all you have to do. Don't hurt anyone else. Love one another. I was raised in a Baptist Sunday school. Then we joined my father's catholic church. My mother was even very curious about Islam back then but chose to go with a middle ground. She was Methodist as a child. I believe. But it never swayed our morals to belong to the church. No one in my family has ever put their faith in higher powers above beliefs in being a good person. We weren't staunch catholic. (I do have a great aunt who was very hard core catholic. It's dying out here in Florida though) And we have always been involved in local politics. Especially civil rights. My father's catholic family (half converted from Judaism during WWII for safety) they live in Ohio! And they are mixed on being religious, but parties aside they also believe in separation of church and state. I have a friend who lives in north Carolina. She's hard core Methodist though. Very Christian woman. And she believes the same thing. What is wrong with the people who can't get over the separation? Just like the damn abortion issues!

I truly enjoyed your video today. I hope that others listen and really soak it in. Our country is in need of healing. Never in my lifetime have I seen such a divide between political parties. We all collectively need to piece back together our nation and remember its heritage. Religious freedom is something we should all value highly. Our forefathers seemed to have great insight as to the future of our nation and they took great steps to protect it.

Goddamn! It was hard to watch this video without rewinding several times. Every 10-15 seconds you said something that got me thinking, and I would miss your next point! This video is a great among greats! Every American should read the Constitution, and at the least the Federalist Papers and other writings by the Founding Fathers, and Maybe read up on William Penn, and the Church of England. Then they might understand the original intent of the Founders on how “Freedom” of (and “From”) religion works, since it isn’t specifically explained for the layman in the Bill of Rights. As you so well pointed out, all of the Founders understood the problems caused by state religions, what with the abuses of The Church of England, and the Holy Roman Empire, and the Inquisition being “current events” for them. Without freedom FROM religion in government, there can be NO freedom of religion. Evangelicals are very close to taking away the freedoms of ALL other non-evangelical religious groups. Many religious people don’t seem to realize that the separation of church and state protects them as much or more than it protects secularists, though it protects us all from becoming another Iran or Iraq. Fortunately many Christians DO understand this freedom and how it works and are also are fighting for separation of church and state, and their own religious freedom. I’m guessing they aren Evangelicals! Oh, and can I buy you a space heater! 😜

@Brian G, thank you for that little giggle as I too, have to do the pause & I do take copious notes & have the Google on standby! I also was thinking of buying him a space heater! 😎 Then, of course, anytime someone mentions the separation of church & state, my old legalese brain goes to the 2014 SCOTUS ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. It's an interesting case. I also agree that everyone should read {at a minimum} the Bill of Rights! You'll be happy to know that my now 7 year old granddaughter had them memorized when she was about 5! God Bless that 'Genetic Engineering"! 😏 Sort of a long standing joke with my kids, that I was Mommy Mengele... maybe? Then comes the words Religious & Christian...they anger me, sorry. The best explanation I've seen to describe TRUE Christianity is that it is a "Relationship, not a Religion". Peace! ☮✌😎

On the subject of religion and politics, after Christianity Today's editorial about the president I'm have been seeing, once again, Romans 13:1-2 coming up frequently as biblical justification to be against impeachment and removal. Why do those verses always seem to apply to their people in authority but not the people on the other side? Yeah, that's one o' those rhetoricals you may have heard about.

If you start from a point at Nicea, a Roman Emperor fitted a bunch of texts about the people and times of Jesus into a narrative we call the Bible today; oddly, it reflects Roman Imperial Law to a tee. "Translating" it some thousand years later, and it not only spoke a language that none of the people whom it was about had ever imagined, it spoke well fitted to English Common law.

Some of your commentary reminds me of something I wrote in response to someone telling me that the freedom of religion didn't mean freedom FROM religion. This is a blog post from 2018. Keep Your God Off Me! June 17, 2018 | Edit I saw a post today that was a picture of a famous and recently deceased televangelist. The quote was something along the lines of “The framers of our Constitution meant we were to have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.” My comment was, “I have to disagree with Mr. Graham. I mean, freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. Let’s say I am a Baptist and someone wants to make it a law that you can only be a Methodist. Well, wouldn’t that be a violation of my constitutional rights and a violation of the constitution? Yes, freedom of religion means I get to choose my religion. It also means freedom FROM any religion of which I don’t want to be a part. It even means that should I choose not to follow any organized religion then I can’t be forced to do so. The founding fathers had come from a place where there was a state religion and they wanted to make their own choices and that they did. In this ever changing world that is becoming more and more secular you are going to find more and more people who are wanting the freedom to say they don’t want religion dictating their lives. They most definitely don’t want religion to influence legislation. Most people, including myself, feel that if a person’s religious belief is a positive thing for them and it makes them happy then go for it with all they can BUT don’t try and tell me that I have to live the way they have decided to live. I spent too many years trying to do that very thing and it caused a lot of damage. I’ve seen it happen to so many people. I see politicians use their position to try to make laws that follow their personal religious leaning. I’ve seen people denied things because their religious leaning didn’t follow another’s. We see EVERY DAY how people of differing religions kill each other trying to prove that their version of showing God’s love is superior. It’s insanity.” Now, I’ve pondered the reply to that comment, and one subject more than other parts of it and that is regarding prayer in schools. In the whole of my school career, I don’t recall one regular school day when a prayer was said for the whole school. A couple of assemblies, yes, but it was never part of our daily routine. Was anyone denied the right to say a prayer if they felt the need? I can’t recall that either. I prayed many times during my school day. School was hellish and a kid sometimes needs a little spiritual boost. Now, all of you who are hollering for prayer in schools, you all do know that you have the option to send your children to parochial schools, right? If you want religious training to be part of your child’s education, then you have every right to spend the extra money to send them to a private, church run school. No, you say, NO! We want our kids praying in the public schools! Okay, how are you going to go about it? Who’s going to be saying the prayer? Which religion is going to oversee those prayers? Are you going to get a coalition of religious leaders to rotate on a daily basis? I can assure you that there would be protests in the hallways! The parents of the Baptist students are not going to like the Catholic priest praying over their children and the Catholics won’t like the Protestants praying over their children (of course, their children will be at the Catholic school, right?) and the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons won’t like anyone except their Elders praying for their children and on and on and on. Will the Pagans get their turn to lead the prayers? What about the Satanic Temple? What about the Pastafarians? The agnostic/atheists will just be bored by the whole charade but they will protest because this is a violation of the Constitution. Now, let’s take this to the cities where there is a more diverse population. Are the Christians going to accept a Muslim Imam, a Jewish Rabbi, a Buddhist priest or a Hindu or a Sikh praying over their precious children? And visa versa? I don’t think so. I’ve been reading the social media posts. I have been seeing memes popping up on various pages and on Pinterest. I can see all the hatefulness that seems to be inherent in the religious system in this country and others. Do you really think all of this is new stuff? Shoot, people have been abusing and ostracizing people who didn’t share their religious beliefs for centuries. People have been killing each other for thousands of years trying to prove their god is good. I wonder if one day, the gods we are willing to kill for now, will be put on the shelf as myth just like Odin, Zeus, Thor, Ahura Mazda, Bastet, Osiris (I could go on for pages)? I try to imagine a world where we love each other because it’s the right thing to do, not because some sky god says he’ll punish us if we don’t. Seriously, if you think you need religion to be a good person, what you lack is empathy and human decency. Those are inherent not taught. Religion has been and continues to be the most divisive element of human existence. By nature we are loving beings, we have to be carefully taught to hate and sadly, that hate is often taught us in the pews. Lauraine Garten March 15, 2018
