I understand the mentality of young tracers because when I was literally like 9 years old I traced some art and posted it to Scratch (it’s a coding site that’s very fandom based I mainly posted memes) most of my posts didn’t get any traction so I retraced a popular meme and tried to pass it off as my own. Someone called me out on it and I took it down. I never did that again because people in my dms explained how tracing without giving credit is hurtful. I’m not trying to excuse my actions but to be fair I was a literal child...

Yeah, I use Scratch often, and I don't like how people send their followers to mass report and get mad at recolorers or tracers who are usually just kids, and not even profiting since it's *literally* just Scratch. It's also against Scratch's rules to call people out like that and I wish more people knew that. Especially since Scratch is for coding, not art (though that doesn't mean artists can't use it), so it's rules are going to adhere more to protecting coders than protecting artists.

I've had my art stolen and posted not only on instagram but also tumblr with no credit-- it got worse when the person claimed people could 'trace' their work. It sucked because at the time i did make some 'poses' that where free to use and trace after many people asked for them. It made me switch to a heavily detailed style rather than the fun 'cartoony' one i had at the time in hopes it would be harder to trace and steal. Now and then i find people trying to claim my OC's as theirs on instagram, but just as you suggested, if it was a small account i'd message them, if they where big the report button was my messiah. PS: would love to see a longer video about corporations stealing art, especially if you mention hot topic's messy and rather current incidents.

I've only had my art stolen once. A silly star wars comic strip I made and put on tumblr got LITERALLY screencapped and put on instagram by someone who had like, a dedicated Kylo Ren account. And when I say it was a screencap, I mean you could see the tumblr blue on the background. Despite that person finding it on tumblr and literally just screencapping it they conveniently left out my username from the image. When my friend told me, I commented asking the person to just credit me because it had gotten WAY more exposure in their reposting. They deleted my comment so my friend went onto like every picture on their account (all from different artists) and told them to credit the artists until they took down my comic but not.... literally anyone else's. The most frustrating thing TO ME is I would not have really cared too much as long as they credited me!

Y'know, I kinda wonder exactly how young the art thief was. Because that sort of pressure and insecurity is the kind of mindset a very young person has. I'm saying this because I think that offers them the chance to be forgiven. While I was never a tracer (because the thought never occurred to me, so I guess I was smart and stupid simultaneously lol) I can relate to the immense discomfort of seeing people with, presumably, less experience exhibiting a lot of natural skill in a thing you're passionate about. I'd also postulate that maybe those other people the ex-thief was jealous of were actually tracing themselves. This is very much ONLY an assumption. But if they were convinced to trace themself, to look like they were more improved, what stopped their peers from doing the same? (Pro-tip for interviews: Follow up questions thought up on-the-spot can be a good way to offer the interviewee more of a chance to explain from another angle, and give even more clarity to your viewers.)

I didn’t post any of it though since I /did/ grow up with technology and learned early on that posting that kind of stuff was bad. I think the difference between traders and art theives is *intent*. Obviously some kid just tryna improve their art by tracing the things they see isn’t doing it to be malicious, but an adult stealing work and passing it off as their own for profit is a shit human being. I never posted it, but in middle school I traced a pose from one of those how to draw manga books and made a cringy gothic vampire OC with it, and the proper anatomy clashed so hardcore with the juvenile beginner's details that it's laughable in retrospect. I also traced a picture of Ben Franklin in 2nd or 3rd grade because I was rushing on a project that I was procrastinating on, and it turned out looking so bad that nobody would have thought that it was traced, but still passable since 2nd or 3rd graders aren't exactly expected to be art pros. Come to think of it, plagiarism is taken very seriously in schools, but art theft and tracing is something that I highly doubt that most teachers even consider the possibility of.

I got one of my old art stolen that not longer proud of for facebook group background and honestly i wasn't mad or anything, until when i was reached out to the mod TWICE to ask if they can crediting me, their only responds is "Huh" That's the moment i realized that there is no hope for this situation, so i gave them one last message to credit me and never reach out again. So please if you want to use small artist art just for profile pic or whatever, please give them some credit so other people also can see other artist's work, it's not that hard

And to absolutely NOT harass or attack the person or make the situation public unless needed.

"Could of just traced it and kept it to yourself" Exactly how I learned XD and honestly I can relate so much to the tracer. I've been drawing for years and even now I feel like I'm really under developed compared to others, but I just keep trying, hoping my art is just good enough.

I really loved this video and I wanted to give my experience with tracing! I'm already an established artist, and when I trace art or photos it's either to learn something (like anatomy) or because I've hit an inspiration rut and want to learn from other artists. When I do create a piece that was traced or HEAVILY inspired I always include a picture of the original art/photo and a link to where I got it from. Unfortunately, because I get everything from Pinterest I can't always be sure the link will lead back to the artist, so if there isn't a watermark too, I just don't post it. Furthermore, I never use tracing in a commission. I feel this works well enough for me and I don't do it all the time. Nor has anyone complained.

I know I'm very late but as someone who used to trace I completely relate to the interviewed tracer. I used to use a social media app called Picsart, when I was younger before I was allowed anything like Instagram. There was one artist I loved and did amazing drawings and because I wanted people to notice me, I stopped drawing from scratch as I believed my art wasn't good and started tracing the artist, changing certain parts/sizes of the drawing in hopes it was unrecognisable. My account gained about 2000-3000 followers, but then the artist noticed I had been tracing them. They came up to me and told me that they would like to be credited and they even said they didn't mind me tracing as I was obviously learning. Me and that artist are still friends to this day although I no longer use picsart but use instagram instead. I feel this video was very helpful as most people believe tracing is horrible to the point the can have the excuse to be rude and tell young artists certain things like telling them to k!ll themselves, Sorry I wrote a lot :_>

So when I was around 9, I had amino. (Already a bad thing) and I got bored and wanted popularity, so I made a chat called ‘free commissions!’ And a lot of people came into the chat. They sent their ref-sheet into the chat, after they did that I’d look up some art of the same species of them, I’d scroll for a while so it’d be hard to pick up on. After I’d got a image I’d put it into FlipaClip, make a new layer and trace it. After I’d finished the art I’d dull the traces layer and made a “sketch” layer. I’d send it to the person and they went on with their day. I never made any money but people still tried to reach out after I stopped tracing, I tried to practice more often and honestly just improved a lot, I’m pretty sure the chat still exists and might still be getting people. *thank you for coming to my Ted Talk*

Hey I came from a Creep show Art video talking about your situation. I'm really sorry what you went through it is disgusting what those people are saying to you. Plus instagram sucks and it's BS they left you warnings but not the actual people who are doing the crime. I came from a background where I understand about bullying and went through it from childhood (and it sucks) but I still get discriminated today due to my disability though. Anyways I know how it is and want give you my support. I wish you success ❤️. P.s. your art style is cute and I hope your art gets pick up that you'll make anime movies or shows in the future.

I know how tracing feels. My friend has experienced tracing a lot of time for hard work that took her hours. She is in the gacha community so lots of kids trace her art even if she doesnt want them to trace her art. So she was thinking to leave the gacha community for a lot of people tracing her.

Gladly, no one has ever stolen or traced my art. But I’ve had multiple experiences with this topic. (This is just a funny experience, the next paragraphs will be actually about this topic) Once someone made a fanart for me and it looked very much like the inspiration they used that I thought they traced, but it wasn’t traced it had different details. My first experience with art tracing was a few months ago when a friend notified me and more people in a discord server that a person was tracing over some bases and not even saying they used bases, it was pretty obvious tho because the lineart was smooth but the rest was a mess and each drawing had a completely different style. Another experience I had with tracing was last month, I was looking around Picsart and decided to click on a profile that liked my post (this person also stole people’s art). After that I noticed that their latest post had a really similar pose and style as a drawing a friend posted not long ago. I told my friend and she made a post about that person who, obviously, deleted the post immediately and said that my friend’s art was so awesome and the took inspiration. That didn’t convince us and they decided to play victim, saying that they admired my friend and wanted to be like her. At the end they didn’t answer our messages anymore but at least they didn’t trace anything else.

Tbh I can relate soo much to how that person felt Seeing other amazing artists that are much younger than you can be very discouraging Though I've never traced to become popular I only did it once to troll, but it felt awful, so I quickly stopped All because of some artist that was stealing OCs and harassing other artists, telling them to kill themselves and stuff like that I was really mad at that person and reporting them only got the artists' accounts that were being stolen from taken down, so I thought annoying that person would be better, but it wasn't I'm pretty sure their account is still up and they're still being awful, but I'd like to repress those memories

I don't think tracing should be considered as bad as people make it to be. Tracing depends on how much is traced, how much is original and how similar the traced art is from the original. Most of the art that people call "traced art" is just stolen art with more steps cause the tracer most of the time steals the concept too. I'm 100% sure that if people took tracing as a more ok thing (like my point) and realize that just because you trace something doesn't make you an amateur artist (cause there's so many things that you need to learn to draw) most people would start to credit the artist they traced from

I've never had anyone trace my art nor have I traced anyone's art. The only tracing I do is tracing over photos I take for poses or when using the 3d posing models in Clip Studio Paint. I highly reccomend it for an artist of any level. Not just beginner. The issue with tracing a person's stylized work besides the copyright is that you aren't really learning as much as you may think. You're coping someone else vision without seeing the same way they do. Tracing from realism or ambigious 3d models helps you work on your sense of anatomy and how the body language in your work looks and flows. This technique has helped me, a seasoned artist with over a decade of experience, improve drastically in the past 2 months.

You can find poses and such on Google to reference from and with that available to almost everyone I don't think people have too much excuse to trace *and* post a fully traced work. Also you can make your own references by taking pictures. It's how I do hands.

So as a kid I had traced, mostly kept to myself but some I felt like I traced it nicely and showed people from school and I regret that cuz I was stealing people's art,and now that I'm a bit older I would have told my past self to keep that stuff for practice only,no taking credit for stuff I didn't do,and now I'm a bit older and see how bad it was of me to do that, would have been worse if I posted the art,but as a kid I had no social media so that was good.
