Every time people criticize the realism of friend groups remaining strong throughout the course of a TV show (especially high school or college themed shows), I LAUGH. I'm still best friends with my friend group from middle school lol. Granted, we have had long periods of not contacting at some points but we always get back on track. That said, I think it's important to note how the characters all have certain dynamics and separate developments with their bond. Like, the only person who Luca is really friends with in the friend group is Nomi. He never clicked with anyone else. Zoey's arc in 3B is about how she's losing touch with the girls. Ana and Sky recently just got closer over their newfound relationship with God. Aaron isn't really friends with anyone in the group except Doug and Vivek (and Zoey, if you can call that a friendship). Etc. My point is, it's not like Friends or Happy Endings where everyone is just really good friends with everyone. There are definitely some dynamics in which one character is merely associated with the other.

the "HBCU sTyLE" scene was so cringy & uneccessary. i go to an hbcu & i can tell u it was not realistic lol . like why would a bunch of yt ppl be at a hbcu or "hbcu style" party fr ? 💀 but yea you were right about the clothes, dorms, studying, and the friend group thing. 😭😭 like bro, zoey & ana should not still be friends😂

@@icewitdarice Yeah Ana should've dropped Zoey longer. I feel like the writers just didn't want to have to think of ways to keep those two apart. Zoey didn't deserve Ana after that stuff she pulled when Ana was into Aaron. She's so selfish and jealous hearted, it's sad. I feel like if they would've played that a bit more instead of having everyone forgive Zoey as always, it would've meant more to the show.

And the other realist thing that stood out for me, was when ZOE thought she was going to pass her module, and she ended up cheating and got cought. It's really that energy of students when we tell ourselves "I am going to do this, I got this", knowing very well you gonna fail.

I really enjoyed good trouble. Its a good series that can stand on its own while being a spin off of The Fosters. If you can believe it the cast is even more diverse & they don't shy away from complicated topics... they kinda live for exploring it & how far these characters can go.

The show needs a different writer or added writer. They are being lazy with the growth that is needed for these characters. Idk if Kenya just wanted to have multiple shows under his name for status but grownish could be better if they paid attention.

It was a great point about how you start with a lot of friends in your 1st year and as you go on, the number dwindles. Happens to nearly everyone and it feels like we don't have enough friends because of portrays like this but it's completely normal.
@timgraf6320
3 жыл бұрын
The reason the friend group doesn't change much is that then the show would have to be constantly bringing in new people and shortchanging the actors they already have. It would be more realistic but would make the show worse. Although, to be fair, Luca has been mostly missing from the current season, and Nomi also disappeared for a while.

Your thoughts on Grown-ish are valid af! I’ve been saying all of the same things since I’ve started watching the show! It’s like I only love the show b/c to me it’s providing a visual of what I believe we all wish our college experiences (besides the relationships) were really like, but in reality, none of our lives are like this, like at all. It’s like their struggles only last for one episode, then in the next, everything is back to normal and died down. We wish we had it as easy as them. The only realistic characters to me are Jazz and Sky, Aaron, and Doug. They seem to be the only ones dealing with real life situations, like Doug giving Zoey that reality check once she started working at the library with him, Aaron dealing with trying to get a job or internship to start paying off his loans, and Jazz and Sky trying to stay on top of their game so that they don’t lose their track scholarships. Those are good examples of realistic moments and situations. Now the shit Zoey deals with, not so much anymore since the first couple seasons have passed.

My friends and I also had a well-furnished apartment and home. We just had to work hard for it. We all dressed well also, because as stupidly used our refund checks to buy clothes. So while my friends and I may be in the minority, there are definitely peeps who had a grownish/Different World type of college experience

And a lot of people I started with are still really close with their whole freshman year friend groups as well. Also, I went to a HBCU, we got dressed up everything lol. And I did have friends that rented nice sized houses they were decked out. None of those storylines were unbelievable to me at all.

When Aaron decided to just do his masters to push it off his debt I remember twitter lit up that night talking about how accurate that was. That's exactly what people do in his economic bracket. That's what my sister did. Two of my best friends did that. Because while you're in school, they don't ask you to pay it back and you can work without them taking from your check. Him working at the deans office allows him to save. That was really on point and I've never seen a show bring that up before. It's common.

Most of them are born into rich families, that’s why it’s portrayed to be more lively. The sisters on scholarships have great side hustles, and Vivek the only one with actual “poor” parents sells drugs so he pays for the house. It makes sense. Plus they in Cali. Everybody in Cali dress cause they have fashion district so they really wearing “vendor priced” clothes. Atlanta colleges be lit like this too.

I can’t speak on my experiences since I graduated in 1995 but I’ve been working in higher Ed since 1996. The friend complaint is on point. I’ve watched friend groups evolve and change. Sometimes it’s not intentional. Friends drift for lots of reasons. Often it’s because someone in the group doesn’t come back to the college. Sometimes priorities change. One thing that threw me off was when Aaron became a RA but had no idea what his responsibilities were or not understanding dorm rules. No supervisor? No way that’s going to happen.

i really like grown-ish. i think zoe could use a bit more development during the 4th series, since her friends have helped her become less selfish. i really like aaron’s character and can’t wait to see what happens with him and zoe too. it’s quite an addictive and binge-worthy show which I have definitely fallen in love with 😂 i also love sky and jazz, and they have some really funny moments! some of it may not make sense, but the way the friend group stays together allows you to get to know them more! i’m excited to see more of nomi’s life as a mum aswell, and also how aaron and zoe’s relationship will work now he’s graduated! So overall, really entertaining and fun, lots of things to keep you questioning what will happen next, not so real-life accurate, but very good! :)

Grown-ish came out right after I graduated, so it was the first college type show I got to watch from the perspective of “I’ve actually been there”. This show is definitely a dramatization, which in itself isn’t bad, but it lacks a real base. I thought Aaron’s character had/has the best potential, but they play him to their needs of Zoey. Overall, in MY opinion it’s a cute show to just leisurely watch.

That’s a good point about the same exact friend group through all of college. Even the people I know who actually had “friend groups” (I must’ve been a loner cuz I had a friend here and a friend there and I talk to none of them now LOL) even those people had dropped people and gained new people and groups that even do exist in real life will drastically morph through college. No friendship group is that big and still friends with everyone by the middle-last year of college 😂 I actually really got into grownish, but this review is on point!

1. Vivek- is pretty realistic, I can actually name a handful of dudes who had the audacity when it came to girls in school, who gave off the same exact energy. You can't forget, it's people from all over the country, even the world coming to one school, you are gonna meet some crazy personalities. 2. Friendships- okay ill give you the being friends all throughout college, although I remained close with most of my friends from freshman year, we all weren't close to the end. I always think about how we only successfully all hung out together once and never again. 3. The clothing- its a TV show, don't think too much about it, and clothes are subjective, but the point is there. 4. Housing- you right. But like you said "majority of ppl" which means there is a minority, they happen to be that minority. 5. Class/study- again it's just a TV show, it seems like over time they wanna focus more on their personal lives. We can just take their word on them actually going to class.
