my biggest issue with BandaiNamco, besides their adamant refusal to put even the slightest amount of care into the PC Ports, is that they seem to have this adamant aversion to releasing their best games in the west. They'll give us barely functional slop like Gundam Versus (the worst EXVS game in both Roster and game-balance), New Gundam Breaker (a game so bad they couldn't even sell it for 100 yen), or Gundam Crossfire (a game so bad that it was the catalyst of Bandai giving up on selling Gundam in the west), and selfishly hoard titles that would have sold quite well with the right marketing, like Senki 0081, Gundam Breaker 1-3, and EXVS/Full Boost. SD Battle Alliance was fun and absolutely worth the buy, but Cross Rays felt like a very weak G-Gen (maybe I'm biased, because I played the Wars Trilogy and Genesis and loved those), and Code Fairy basically only existed as a vehicle to sucker people into GBO2, a Freemium title that I won't touch on principal. MBON, as good a game as it is, is also several years too late (We should have been gearing for an EXVS2 port in 2020, as XBoost was the newest game at the time) and was most damningly a download-only PS4 Exclusive, and had absolutely no support post-launch. There's also the issue of BandaiNamco wasting resources on doomed projects, like Gundam Evolution, a game that appeals to absolutely nobody and existed pretty much exclusively to tide people over in the 2 weeks the game would get to shine before Overwatch 2 launched and subsequently killed it outright (and it did). There's also the boatload of bad Gundam Mobage like Breaker Mobile (AKA Gunpla Warfare), Udur Hunt, and UC Engage, that exist only as cash-extraction devices for the gambling-addicted, which just make me want these concepts turned into actually fun console/pc games unrestrained by predatory MTX and touch-only controls.

The most complained about changes are the monetization, or how horrendous the balancing is/was. These three changes alone help attract/keep players. I loved evolution. It's the second Gundam Game I've ever played, mostly because it and GBO2 are free. But all those problems, although small, were big when combined. Like lack of backfill and other things yall mentioned. Nobody I knew wanted to play it because "it was just an overwatch clone, and no one wants Overwatch." They preferred GBO2, which is fine, but they're completely different games. I disliked GBO2, but I've heard code fairy is good so I might give that a try before putting the game off forever. With Breaker 4 releasing, I really hope they learn from their past mistakes, and that eventually evolution is revisited in some way shape or form. No the game devs are to blame for GunEvo. It was obvious from the very start as they reported not just what the balance changes were, but how they did it. They looked at superfluous statistics like win rates (which has too many problems to count, but just the tip of the iceberg: if a unit reaches "meta" status like Unicorn in Season 1, so every match both sides field a Unicorn, Unicorn's win rate won't tell you anything) which determined their choices, which oftentimes made no sense. (e.g. Sazabi's SHOTGUN, a close range weapon, deals too much damage? Lower its damage potential and increase its range while keeping the spread so it has zero true utility by being worse than melee weapons AND beam rifles. Or never giving ZakuII-R more magsize for his M-gun, if at least to achieve a happy medium where it was more likely than not to actually kill with a close-range magdump.) We knew the devs were the problem because we could see their problem-solving in action, and they never chnaged their ways no matter how much feedback they got. At some point, if you just see the pattern over and over, you just have to blame the devs. Oh and don't get me started on the Headquarters game mode, probably the apex of suck that at least died when GunEvo did... We gave the devs all the feedback they could ever want. We were always very clear on what we said. They actually just don't listen. Most likely because of the JP-EN barrier, but they knew they had EN players from the get go.

I wasn't super in tune with the comp scene, but I did follow quite a few people that took the game very seriously and they all had nothing but good things to say about how the game felt to play, and wish it had more backing as an esports title. Again, most complaints about the game weren't about balance, they were about monetization and lack of competitive support.
@afelias
7 ай бұрын
@@NewtypeSeiji No, the complaints of the actual players of the game were about balance and matchmaking. The overall thrust of the arguments on gameplay was that no matter how well the mechanics worked in a vacuum, the game itself was a shitty experience. You waited forever for a game with people you weren't supposed to be matched with abusing cheese strats that should have been addressed, but were left alone because they were only "pub stompers" and don't matter, EVEN IF everyone played pub because Ranked was an even worse matchmaking hellhole. And that's if you got a proper 6v6 and not a bunch of leavers because they weren't matched right, or it was HQ mode and everyone left that at some point. I was there, we talked about the game on the Steam forum basically daily, especially around new Season releases. I don't really care what the few think when I know I've seen what the many have said. The game was actually just garbage and was only "promising", but promising doesn't mean jack shit if the issues that were there since Season 1 either never or barely got addressed. Those issues are more fundamental than say, "I don't have the MS I want" because it wasn't too difficult to just make the free MS as good as the P2W ones. Unicorn being a popular pick in S1 didn't always carry over, and you would always see some F2Ps like Barbatos or Asshimar anyway. But that wasn't because the game was properly balanced, it was just that every MS had their own laundry list of issues, or were meta picks that showed up on both sides anyway. Not to mention that they did want to make this game "competitive", but always flubbed the ball just because the game itself was bad. The whole "balance based on win rates" was definitely from the mindset that only the top-tier competitive players mattered. They never considered balance or design changes for casuals, so if they also screwed over the competitive scene it really is just an issue of overall suck. And it could be both that the monetization was bad but also they simply did not hire good devs, AKA pay peanuts get monkeys. But that is the point here, you can blame the devs for being inexperienced if that's simply what it is. The why of it could be the business end, but that doesn't stop the partial result of unskilled devs, and the end result of a bad game. Again, at best it was "promising." None of the promises were ever fulfilled.

Shout out to SD G Generations Cross Rays. Nice amount of units, good tactics game, nice animations, good customisation. I'd like more of every aspect. And I want it to release on Steam since I am not interested in handhelds. And if they could combine UC and AU like they used to in SD G Generations OverWorld, I'd be a sucker to buy immediately. Improvements/enhancements I would like to see in comparison to Cross Rays: - Forget the fixed number of units for raid teams, just deploy what you want. - Make stories skippable in case someone just isn't interested or knows them already, to speed up your gamesession, since it's the reading part that actually slows down the game. - More customisation for characters is always good in my opinion. I love and use my custom created characters in Cross Rays to this day! - I don't know if it would be at all possible, but have customisable units. Not only their look, but their weapons loadout and accompanying animations. (Depending on how much variation and details would go in this, that would be nothing less of amazing legendary epicness.) - Don't add anti-cheats in case it's "just" a singleplayer game, if someone wants to skip the grind and get some skills/CP/XP on his own accord, let players give the freemdom to do it.

I kinda agree with you that fans is one of the factor of why most Gundam game ”failed". Some of us is kinda picky with what kind of Gundam game is the best. Like, as far as i read from some gundam fb group, most people only want a new Gundam Breaker game or Extreme Versus and not giving a chance for SD series game because of it style, even my friend have the same opinion. Crossrays and Battle Alliance can be considered a decent gundam game for the past year. Of course on the other hand of the spectrum is Bandai itself. I think so far they like to ”experiment" with Gundam game, for example like Evolution, trying, to late in my opinion, riding the wave of hero shooter or trying to cash in on the popularity of gacha games and so far it's kinda hit and miss, mostly miss. And don't forget other IP that Bandai have, making them juggling between IP and only make either a ”bad" game or somewhat meh gamd, with only a good game a few in between. And let's not talk about Metaverse. I just hope for the next year, Bandai can have a firm view of how they handle Gundam games. I still have hope for SD Gundam Eternal, i hope they can balance it between gacha and f2p, please don't be too greedy. I hope we can get Extreme Versus series for global and not only console but also PC. They can still get money from it, while the arcade, well, you know how arcade work to emptying out your wallet, some kind of "gimmick" can work for console and PC player, maybe make unit rotation every week/month, you can unlock unit with in game money or real life money. The same for navigator, custom UI and skin for the gunpla, either collecting in game currency or empty your wallet. A new SD Gundam series like Crossrays and of course a new good Gundam Breaker, maybe with a connection with Metaverse anime, not the weird and leaky project. I'm sure it will be fun having yout own custom gunpla fighting all the character not only from breaker series, including new breaker, yes, but also build series.

For me the biggest hurdle is localization, and a great number of the backlog is JP only. There’s some great games on the PSP, but the language barrier has been a huge turn off for me, but I WANT to try more than just NEXT PLUS. I’m willing to give SD games a try as the more recent kits like the MGSD kits have kinda given me a newfound appreciation and respect for the unique SD style. My biggest turn off remains the RPG and Strategy games, as I don’t necessarily mesh well with those genres, especially if they’re not in a language I can understand fluently (some of the games have been slightly English patched, but still most of them or most of the patched games may still have walls of Japanese dialogue which I can’t understand.) its not as big of a deal for GvG games, but other games that have lots of dialogue that’s pivotal to a plot or gameplay, there’s an issue. Still, now that I’m back into Gundam (thanks Gunpla), i’ll try to sift through what I can get my hands on and give more of the games a try.

I think the games fail mostly to Gundam simply not having enough impact with modern anime audiences. People know of Gundam, but haven't sat down to watch Gundam. As such the game sales suffer with lack of interest or no interest. If the target audience also isn't impressed with the game where they don't buy it. Then Bandai sees no reason to invest much into developing Gundam games for the West. Gundam got a decent grip in the late 90s with Gundam Wing, but Bandai's latest efforts are niche' even within the Gundam community. People are split on Witch from Mercury and titles with the Origin label typically only appeal to UC die hards. A lot of folks seem excited for Gundam SEED's return, but again, SEED doesn't appeal to every Gundam fan. So, it's really just us, we're so all over the place when it comes to what type of Gundam series is being lauded versus what a larger majority wants to be held up. Some might say a fighting game might be the best and easiest way to unite the divided US Gundam fans, but not everyone likes fighting games.

Nobody wanted SD Gundam Battle Alliance. The strange part is that these games were made for the "western" players. The same players that always asked for another Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Another Gundam Breaker(or a remaster of Gundam Breaker 3), another SD Gundam G Generation. I had to import Cross Rays to play on the Switch and the game was overpriced because of this, but i loved the game, played for 230+ hours. Imagine my disappointment when they announced Battle Alliance as a very limited dynasty warriors ripoff with almost zero customization and only 80 units(Crossrays have 400+ units and have a lot of customization options, including the chance to put every character to pilot every unit). Good video, appreciate your insights. I’m a big MBON fan of course(still mourning it’s apparent death online…so hard to find a team free lobby these days), but also enjoy some of the other titles. You just have to weigh what it is your looking for. I’m currently hooked on SD G Battle Alliance to the point that the Armored Core 6 that I picked up the same day is still in it’s wrapping. Is this crazy? Possibly, but I’m a huge Gundam fan so I’m naturally drawn to the game as it offers a solid enough experience to compliment the healthy chunk of fan service and nostalgia it provides me. I also personally think the graphics are great, I really like the look. To your point of the game having to actually be good enough to warrant your purchase, I think it definitely holds true even for big fans such myself (whom I consider a pretty big but discerning fan of both Gundam and videogames alike). I think a good example for me personally was just a couple of days ago I was really digging SDG B. Alliance and it got me in a “Gundam mood” do I reinstalled both Cross Rays as well as New Gundam Breaker as both were games I played very little of and figured maybe I’d just not given them a proper shot and proceeded to fire up New Gundam Breaker (still haven’t gotten around to Crosd Rays but I have higher hopes) almost immediately I was reminded why I’d dropped it so quickly. It’s just a bad game, poor controls, mediocre animation, missions that aren’t in the least bit compelling. I closed it and uninstalled within minutes, no amount of Gundam fandom can convince me to go back to that mess and rightfully so. I ran back to SD Battle Alliance as fast as I could and am 😮still playing it and having fun unlocking and leveling up suits. I brought up the Gundam Breaker incident just to point out how it reinforced the fact that to me that Battle Alliance is at worst a “pretty good” game that serves to provide a mostly positive venue for the fan service and such where as no amount of nostalgia and fan service (and it has tons, arguably more than SDGBA) can make it an enjoyable purchase and it’s stands in direct contrast to Battle Alliance in that regard. Anyways that ran on a boy long but oh well, good luck going forward with everything!

I think Bandai Namco is simply not a top tier game developer and this is in itself a barrier to fans keeping an open mind. In comparison to their model kit releases, which do receive their share of criticism, but those would be more on the choice of subject and go to market strategy (such as keeping it on p-bandai). The engineering and quality of the model kits are praised time after time, regardless of whether you like the subject or not. Gundam games lack this industry leading pedigreed such that general reception is luke warm at best even if everything is done right.

I buy almost Gundam I’d say. I own SD Gundam Cross Rays, MBON, GVS, New! Gundam Breaker, and Battle Alliance most recently. Honestly the only one I dislike out of that bunch is ”New Breaker”. All the others are good to great games IMO. That’s just recently. In the past I poured tons of hours into Federation vs Zeon, Gundam Battle Assault 2, and the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games were all good fun looking further back. Man I hope they announce some form of EXVS2 in the next year.

A big big big (the biggest) issue is that localization is absolutely dogshit on Bandai's part. Add on there has been near zero ports to other systems outside of Playstation for most games. Those are huge barriers to entry. There just not a real "audience" left in Western economies. Bandai has basically abandoned the rest of us and we simply CAN'T support the games. Add onto that unless you specifically are a diehard Gundam fan, Gundam games in general are absolutely medicore. Even the best of them. Gundam games are not a genre it's an IP. If Bandai makes a good game people will play it. Period. Not just Gundam fans but others too. Look at Gundam Breaker and Dynasty Warrior. Non-Gundam fans like those games because they're just rock solid games. Most people who even just "like" gundam will not try a game that doesn't have good reviews or only apeals to a niche part of their already niche market. I love Gundam but The PC Crossrays port crashes every 5 minutes unless you spend a lot of time figuring out how to get it set up to work every time you install it. The average person will not do that, they'll just be pissed and far likely to skip the next Gundam game regardless of genre.

The problem with Gundam games is that most of them don't appeal to audiences outside of Japan and don't appeal to those who aren't fans of the Gundam franchise. Gundam really isn't as well known as what people think, despite the RX-78-2 (a.k.a "the OG Gundam") becoming a pop culture icon that had cameo appearances in a few big western movies (Pacific Rim and Ready Player One).

Few Gundam fans would be picky about the games they play as they are too few available outside Japan. I mean I don't really like fighting games, but the lack of Gundam content outside Japan makes it so that I will buy every Gundam game that comes out to show BamCo that we care outside Japan. . It is a fact that up until recently -and still nowadays- BamCo just sleeps on Gundam fans outside of Japan. For instance, MBON release is one of an arcade game that was already outdated when it was released to us. The same applies to Gunpla, official stores are virtually not existent. Also when it comes to supporting the games throughout its lifespan, they really have big troubles doing that: the quality of their DLCs are meh compared to what we would expect here. We don't have the gacha culture here, just dropping a few cosmetics and suits is not enough to warranty content renewal. The same applies to G-Evo, Bandai just straight up stopped making any effort to release new content, outside cosmetics and suits, then decided it was not worth keeping the servers online and just shutdown the game completely. Same applies for NGB, it feels like BamCo just give up at the first issue they encounter and refuse to invest money: their games are always a hit or miss. Shame when we see how some games have released in catastrophic states and still made it and are thriving today. I do agree that nowadays the situation tends to get better with GB4 coming out and the last SD games and I can only hope it continues to improve in the future. But they got to take some risk, we fans are here to support them, they have to understand that.

SD Gundam Battle Alliance is a great game but I slightly had more fun with the old online sd gundam game other than there were alot of hard missions and mech balance was not too great. It's a shame the newer one didn't have english voices as well as some people don't want to read during fight scenes. It’s not just the video games. It seems like that kind of attitude spreads to the anime fans too. I’m in a group that a guy expressed interest in the new Witch from Mercury series. He told everyone else. I too watched a bit of the series. Is it like the other serious UC series, no, but for what it was I thought it was pretty cool. A sentiment not shared by 90% of the people that commented. They all said the series was trash. It’s not real gundam. I even remember someone saying that IB: Orphans was trash but the Witch was even worse. And I’m like, “Damn, I thought it was an okay show.” But apparently it looks like there is a criteria of what they believe is a good Gundam series and anything that doesn’t check off those boxes, 👎🏽 It’s funny because I just watched this video a few days before and I was seeing some parallels here.

Also namco bandai knows what fans like yet they will not bring them over or go the other route. Gundam battle assault, DW gundam were good. Having played the musou games and SDBA they are very different. SDBA was great idea however the game's class system and difficulty were terrible. If SDBA used a system similar to assault survive or DWG then it would have been far better than what we got.

I guess the problem lies in both myself and Bandai Namco. Like you and perhaps a good number of peeps out there, I loved SD Battle Alliance and consider it my favorite Gundam game since DWG3. Aside from the SD aesthetics it pretty much had everything I could ever want in a Gundam game. My problem is, throughout the nearly one year period since it got released, it barely got any new content whatsoever. Other than a handful of new story expansions and MSes including the Aerial to coincide with G-Witch being on air, there was pretty much nothing else afterwards, really. My issue is not in the devs that pour their heart and soul into these games, not at all. My issues lie in both Bamco and the vast majority of the fans. A lot of the fans for not really knowing what they want and not knowing how they can express what they want, and Bamco for basically not caring anymore. I'd say this goes beyond the games as well, I feel like Bamco just stopped caring for Gundam period (a part of me does hope it changes next year though, since the franchise will be turning 45 by then). They'd market things for a good bit and stopped caring afterwards. They also trendhop as if it's gonna change the general perception of the franchise with things like GunEvo (no offense, I personally just see it as nothing more than another Overwatch copy with Gundam clothes) and the Metaverse, and would also gladly change their tune to keep on selling model kits to markets that have questionable morals and politics (retconning SuleMio just so they can still sell stuffs to markets that outright ban LGBTQIA representation). I could go on, but I'll end it with this - How Bamco's been handling Gundam in general has shown me they're nothing but yet another greedy corporation that will just gladly milk any franchise to the ground without a care in the world for the fans or the arts, and to me, it shows in the games. Sorry for sounding a tad one-dimensional in all this, but it's just what I've been feeling about the whole fiasco lately. I'm sure there's more to this and I'd be more than open to want to hear more about it, but this is where I stand as things go. Thanks for the great discussion, by the way!

With regards to Battle Alliance, I think a common misconception is that people expected it to receive ongoing content. And I think the reason for this is because live service is the standard that so many games are going for nowadays. The reality is that Battle Alliance was always meant to be a game where you played the story and all the DLCs and that was it. But the people that liked it, REALLY liked it, so they wanted more content in order to have a reason to keep playing.

I think as a Gundam Evolution player honestly it was entirely management but I think in part the players who did the opposite route when it was ending When GUNEVO was starting there was a large crowd waiting for Gundam Aerial at the time to appear in the game. And ironically have done so when they kept putting unrelated Gundams most guys would not encounter or even liked. Honestly when Gundam Battle Operation 2 is still technically standing I think they knew many may like let's say Gundam Universal Century and would have worked really well at the time yet somehow ignored in Gundam Evolution to give some priority. And as I said Gundam Aerial there was a time a lot of people might be watching Gundam the Witch from Mercury and if Gundam Aerial released or even the Rebuild version there was a chance it worked. Instead they gave profile cosmetics that in some ways was expensive enough and the original free weapon charm and the Iconic Poster Spray in game [for some]

As a Gundam Heavyarms Custom and a Guntank Player I once met my Match as my enemy and the next Match Later I fought along side him in that and thankfully that is one of the moments I can never forget. And many more Not only that they unintentionally made a bridge to remove the device of a Asia / US / Japan divide when the players played one another. It helped many who played in all servers respect and learn to progress equally at the time and as a Asia / Japan server player before the end of the game the US server reached a point where all their progress was perfect and made everything they needed was on Match to the Asia / Japan server did for months I just also wished the same that if Bandai Namco did what they didn't want to do with the Microtransactions and the Bad choice of Characters and many more the game wouldn't shut down now or even for years to come I will never retire the MS I piloted but I wished they did better when it launched and knew what to do before hand what they didn't need to do early on. Bit late to the party, but I don't entirely agree with your statement, about people complaining about gundam games looks. First I bought all the games I'm going to be talking about, but that doesn't mean I wasn't super wary about them, and less interested than I would be for other reasons. First off, I don't like SD. The style is a turn off for me, no matter how good the game is. The fact is, it's not the sort of mecha I like. I like the more realistic mecha games. Mechwarrior, Battletech etc. In comparison you have SD battle Alliance, which wasn't terrible, but was still an SD game, mixed with a psuedo light novel system, which I also don't tend to like in games. Connected to an alright battle system, which I did have some fun with when I bought it. But I bought it on sale, because it's an SD game, and I don't like them. Second is SD Crossrays also for the PC. Very similar to Battletech a game I adored and dumped in hours and hours on, bought all the DLC etc. casual western gundam fans in my experience don't like SD, and so again it hurt a game that could have been very popular. And then yes, they do keep sending over games that don't perform well even in Japan. Someone in Bandai is shooting themselves in the foot I think on purpose, there's no other explanation for so many of the ports being games that didn't even sell in Japan, while we miss all the ones that DO.

The best game they have made in the last 5 years was SD Gundam battle alliance and Gundam battle ops 2. Sd needed a bit more meat on the bone and more variety in missions. And gbo2 needs more exposure. I am very good at both games but it's not fun when there's no community left. Gbo2 is very free to play friendly and how I played it and have all but a few suits. What they need to make is something like the ps2 games with more realistic visuals and more arcade style. But still have weight to the suits that are slow.
