A little bit about Skulls of Sedlec: Sedlec Ossuary (an ossuary is a room where bones are placed) is an actual place in the Czech Republic. Estimates are that tens of thousands are skeletons are buried there. In the ossuary, the bones are arranged "artistically," so that's why you're stacking skulls in the card game. It's all thematically related. If I'm not mistaken, the designer visited Sedlec when he was traveling through Europe and then entered a Button Shy contest where entrants were asked to design a game around a real-world place. (Monique, the original solo version of SoS is called Monstrance and it's quick and fun. There's also a later expansion called Crown of Bones that I haven't tried yet. There are also expansions that introduce other characters such as poets, castle guards, merchants, etc.) Since I'm on the topic of Button Shy games, I think you and Naveen would enjoy Circle the Wagons, a quick-playing two-player classic. I also like Sprawlopolis and Death Valley. I've played Jekyll vs. Hyde a few times. It's such a thematcially and mechanically clever game. I have won as Dr. Jekyll but it is hard because Mr. Hyde just has to have one blowout round to pretty much ensure a victory. We always play twice, giving each player the opportunity to play both characters.

When I was little, my aunt taught me this dice game called Yan. I wasn’t aware of Yahtzee until I moved to the US (9 years ago). Yan was similar to Yahtzee, but it was more strategical. You had four columns: normal (3 rolls), Up, Down and “dry” (you score without re rolling). The rows are similar to Yahtzee, 1s, 2s, etc, straights, but also full house. The Up and Down column were interesting, because you could get stuck. You had to do the rows in asc or des order. The Dry column is also a cool decision. Sometimes you get an okay roll with your first roll, and you can decide to score that. My aunt would just draw everything in a notebook, and she would fill pages and pages of Yan games… she played solo a lot. I was always impressed how fast she was able to add the numbers up 😂! She was the same aunt that taught me fun card games, including many trick taking games.

My partner and I just recently discovered Jekyll vs Hyde recently and we love it so much! We’ve played it 8 times and Dr. Jekyll has only won twice. How interesting to hear that other players find Mr. Hyde to be the more difficult character to play! This game is so clever. Great video, as always. I also really appreciated the honest feedback on Dulce, because it looks so, so lovely. #ninjastar

These games sound fun, especially Jekyll and Hyde, so thanks for this. Although it wasn't for Halloween, I recently played an apparently quite rare game called The Tower of Madness, which is basically Kerplunk plus Yahtzee, with a Cthulhu-esque theme. Sounds ridiculous, but is amusing and somewhat strategic. The eponymous Tower has 'tentacles' to pull out, and what falls out are the marbles of Madness (red), Magic (white) Power (blue) and Doom/Chaos (green). To avoid pulling a tentacle (and possibly going mad), you have a mini dice game, with different rules depending on which spooky Room you're in. If you beat all other players to win the room, you get points, but if you fail the minimum rolls, its Kerplunk time. True to the theme, the Tower can bring benefits, (spells/points) but at the risk of madness, or total obliteration! If you get too many Red marbles, and go irrevocably mad, you can still win by getting all the special small Green marbles to fall out ... but only on your turn. So suddenly your goal is almost diametrically opposite to all the still sane players, for whom the falling of the last Green marble is equivalent to Yog sothoth turning up in the living room!
