Letter indexing is a technique used in many puzzles in which you retrieve an individual letter from a word, phrase, or line of text by counting a given number of characters from the start. Given a sequence of index numbers, the corresponding letters can be assembled to form a secret word or phrase.
In its simplest form, the text in which the letter is looked up can be the alphabet itself, in which case the "index" number is simply that letter's position in the alphabet. However, more interesting puzzles can be created by referencing the letters using any passage of text, and communicating both the source text and the index number in thematic ways - in the names and phone numbers in a telephone directory, dishes in a takeaway menu, items on a shopping list, product catalogue, or price list, to name but a few examples!
