end of evangelion is a big ifykyk kinda movie. you do have to watch the 26 episode series beforehand, but it's most definitely a totally bizarre, very unique watch. always surprised it's so high with just how narrow the entry point is for viewers wanting to check it out.

I hate to sound like a snob, but the reason the IMDb top 250 is more English-language, more recency bias than Letterboxd is because the IMDb scores come from a much wider pool of people. Way more casual Hollywood movie fans have rated films on IMDb than LB. It's because a much higher proportion of LB users are cinephiles than IMDb users.
@movieace1295

just give the LB list time, if it gets more popular there will be more recent movies and especially comic book movies on the list. then cinefiles have to find a new app. Same with imdb back in the day before it got popular, and people fled to letterboxd

They recently changed the Letterboxd rating system so that it’s weighted in some way (the information on how it is weighted hasn’t been released so that people cannot use this information to disrupt ratings in anyway). Before this change, taxi driver was on the top 250 around spot 200 but it’s off now. I didn’t even know until I watched this video, that’s insane. One of the best films of all time.

According to what I could find online, half of the platform's active users are under 35, and more than half of that group is between 16 and 24. That would go a long ways toward explaining the results. Also, the US, Britain, and Canada together only comprise about 35% of the visitors, which probably partly explains why there are so many foreign movies in the list, including a good number that I'm guessing most Americans and Brits have never heard of - and probably many people in that "foreigner" group are older, because I'm doubting that many of the under 35 crowd are voting for "The Human Condition: Part 3."

Remember the good old days when Call Me By Your Name was one of the highest rated films ever before it got swarmed by the sexaphobe kids who couldn't handle the "age difference".
I like how yall took a slight offense in spot 99 for "2001" but didn't even know Abbas Kiarostami or even Robert Bresson. Like, come on white boys, maybe that's the reason it's "only" 99, because there is a whole world of movies out there each of us has been ignorant towards, and with a diverse community on a website like BL an accumulated score by cinephiles across the globe can reveal some of them to us. Like, maybe there is more than "just" Kubrick (still a brilliant film maker don't get me wrong), u feel me smh
@wavwins

Fair enough but there *are* a ton of basic, widely recognized picks above 2001 that don’t deserve to be. I’m not defending these guys but I think it’s fair to take issue with the film’s placement considering the full content of the list.

M is not a silent film. Soy Cuba and The Cranes are Flying are brilliant Soviet films by Kalatozov (and they are absolutely unabashed collectivist propaganda lol), they are free on KZitem, however, please try to find a spanish version of Soy Cuba. The Russian dub doesn't do it justice. Satantango, is a masterpiece but it is a challenging 7.5 hours. I recommend Bela Tarr's (who is often critical of Soviet influence in his films) other films as well, particularly, The Turin Horse (which is a more typical length). All of Bresson's films (A Man Escaped, Au Hasard Balthazar, L'argent, etc.) are deconstructionist films (and not in the Ozu/Edward Yang's YiYi tofu film way of cinematizing yet de-dramatizing every day life, Bresson is not nearly as humanist). A man escaped is literally just about a man escaping. He famously dumbed down performances and exhausted his actors to highlight the elements in his specific artistic utterances, his images and characters, etc. An acquired taste for sure. He is very much Film's Brecht, and Hanake is his spiritual successor. More meta about telling stories, more philosophy brought out by the characters and their interactions, no 19th century Romantic notions, very much exploring for truth through art, very critical filmmakers, not necessarily storytellers, albeit they're still great storytellers. It's a shme there is no Hanake, The Piano Teacher has the finest acting of the century (up with There Will be Blood in my Opinion). If you see The Pianist as the second best holocaust film, I highly recommend Son of Saul. Where is the Friend's House is one of the most sincere and touching films, most of Kiarostami's films are, I highly suggest a film by the director that has the big fan in Close-UP, Makhmalbaf, it's called A Moment of Innocence. The Ascent is directed by the wife of the director of Come and See, so you have a couple in the lb top 100 lol. Agree wrt Fanny & Alexander, anybody who is a fan of Bergman, this is the essential film, I actually prefer the 3 hour theatrical cut. It's a shame Wings of Desire (by Wim Wenders of Paris, Texas) didn't seem to make the cut. It is a beautiful and transcendent film. I think Woman in the Dunes and Diary of a Country Priest (aforementioned Bresson) were Tarkovsky's favorite films (btw absolutely watch Andrei Rublev, it is Tarkovsky at his absolute best). Interesting how there is no Godard, even his FNW era films. As influential as he is he and his poppy, meandering, rule breaking films are still quite controversial. At least Vivre sa Vie (when he still was making sincere films and didn't sell his soul to the revolution) deserves to be in the top 100 films of all time imo.
