Modelled after Sir Francis Walsingham’s letter to Sir Ralph Sadler (4 September 1584) the British Library, MS Add. 33594, fols. 56, 57.
Model found in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC 0760.
Sir Francis Walsingham, Queen Elizabeth I’s spymaster, used a high-security technique to send a message to Sir Ralph Sadler. Walsingham or his letterlocker cut a triangle-shaped lock from the corner of the letter substrate and used it together with sealing wax to secure the packet shut. Sadler or his secretary would have had to tear the paper lock to read it. Compare with our video Sir Francis Walsingham’s Triangle-locked Letter Written in Code, England (1587), where Walsingham employs a similar-looking letterpacket built with a lower security technique.
