“Some people called it ‘the torture room,’ or ‘the dungeon,’ and that’s usually where (prison staff) would put them in four-point restraints” where an incarcerated man’s limbs were chained to a bed for hours.
The scars were called the “Thomson tattoo,” named after the Thomson penitentiary in Illinois.
The newest federal prison quickly became one of the deadliest, our reporter Christie Thomson found with NPR’s Joseph Shapiro in 2022. Then in early 2023, the feds said they were closing the prison’s violent unit.
