In the previous outpost, you chose to grab one of their makeshift weapons, a spear with a mineral acting as the blade. Although it would've been helpful to take a lantern, you decide to stick with walking around in the dark, as any light could potentially draw in a possible threat. Even so, getting lost is almost impossible now that you've found ways of mentally keeping track of everywhere you've gone. You're almost certain that the locations you head to are completely new, no matter how dark and unidentifiable these paths may be.
After a few more minutes of walking, you suddenly hear a group of footsteps in the distance, assuming it's a horde of entities. You stop in your tracks like usual and wait for the sound to go away. However, this time it isn't the usual noises you typically have heard these past few hours. It sounds like people, actual people. You can hear a somewhat intelligible conversation in the distance, followed by the beeps of a walkie-talkie.
You clench your spear tightly, unsure of what you should do. You're uncertain as to whether this group is friendly or not, and there's also the factor they might not even be human, just another shape-shifting entity. You hear the noises of the crowd slowly fade away, pressuring you to make a decision. On the spur of the moment, you shout for them, hoping that the group heard that and nothing else did.
Everything goes silent for a split second before the noises of the party become louder, whispering in confusion. You yell again, a bit quieter than before. The group heads toward the area that you're in and look around for you. You drop your weapon immediately and raise your hands in the air, softly calling out to them. The group sees you in the distance and starts walking towards you.
"We're not gonna hurt you. We're gonna take you and your stuff and bring you somewhere safe, okay?", one of the soldiers informs. You nod your head, willing to follow them wherever they go. This moment seems familiar as if you've met this group before. M.E.G, was it called? Something like that. This group has always felt like a safe haven for you, even though it was hopeless to assume that these people are immortal. It just always seems like they know what they're doing.
The group takes you to their outpost, which seems much bigger than the previous town. An entire facility riddled with armed guards and security. A good group of survivors are seen wandering around the area as if they've lived there for years. "This is gonna be your new home for a while. Take as much time as you need here, okay? We understand how difficult it must be to survive on your own". You lift your head up, staring at him with an expressionless face, not saying a word. The group stares back in confusion.
"Take me to the exit. I'm leaving."
"Kid, you just got here. Don't you need to rest for a bit?"
"I don't need to rest. I'm not stopping until I see my family again."
"Well I'm sorry to tell you this, but... well I won't sugarcoat it. There's just no way out of here. At least not yet. Nobody we've documented has recently found a way to go back home."
"But it's possible that somebody has, right? Maybe this person was never documented. Flew under the radar or something.”
"Kid, look... I wouldn't risk it. Not even our strongest men could pull off something like that."
"..."
"...I'm leaving. Lead me to the next level."
"..."
"..."
"You won't make it."
"......"
"My name is Gary Miller. And I've been through more hell than all of you have combined. I've traversed through multiple levels and met groups that either wanted to help me or tried to slit my throat. I've gone insane countless times. I felt what it was like to drown...
And I know for a fact that me being alive and standing in front of you all was just luck on my side, but maybe... maybe that means something. Maybe it means that I could find a way out. And I'm not just gonna give up and pretend like it's impossible.
So no. No, I don't believe you. If I can survive everything that I've gone through, then I'm not stopping until I see the real world again. I don't care how many places I need to go through, or how many times I need to get hurt...
You.. you think that I'd go through hell just to stop here? You assumed I'd just stay and try to count my blessings? No.
My wife... my daughter... they need me as much as I need them. Who knows how long it's been. Days, weeks, months? Didn't you ever ponder how your family must've reacted when you suddenly disappeared without a trace?
And although there is the absolute smallest chance that you may be right... the chance that there is no way out... I'd rather die knowing that I tried as hard as I possibly could for the people who woke up crying when they saw I was missing.
...
So please for the love of God, just show me the way."
