For Home Assistant I've created a group for my motion sensors in a given room. That group is on when any sensor is triggered and off when all sensors are off. That simplifies the automation.

Even If have routines with ultrasounds since november, I still learned new things with you today! I had to buy more echo dots to have one in each room to activate lamps connected to a smart plug and one in my basement connected to a smart switch. I also have a routine in the bathroom that is activated with the sound of water and starts my favorite radio station between 6am and 9h am. This one, I make it last 55 minutes since I don't want the routine to start every 5 minutes. The only problem is that not only the sound of the shower is starting it! 😅 Thank you for your help. My kids and family think I'm a geek know! 😁

Somehow I watched the whole video and I don't have any Echo's, or run SmartThings or Home Assistant. We are a HomeKit household. Still knowledge is the key to solving smart home projects. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

I am a Homekit/Home Assistant household and can do anything described in this video with a simple presence sensor. If you just use Homekit the options are limited (although this will improve when Matter sorts itself out). I use the Aqara FP1 which is not available in the US but can be orderd from AliExpress. Aqara's FP2 will be released in the US shortly so you could wait for those. The Aqara presence sensors work amazingly well and give a much more rapid response Echos.

Same, also I know you came to HA from ST. We have a new home in April. And I have no experience with either home assistant or smart things. Does it make sense to do everything within home assistant and not learn both? Smart things just seems so much simpler to the uninitiated.

Hi Reed Is it possible that the edge virtual switch is not yet available in Canada? Creating virtual switches is exactly has before. No option to change drivers. Is it possible for you to share the link about the virtual switch you show in the video? Great video by the way. I like your content.

I found an "issue" with HA and using a transition to fade-out a light. If it was mid fade-out and motion was triggered again it would ignore the light-on command as it was busy doing the fade-out. Even with restart automation enabled. The only way I found to get around the problem was to add an [if motion = on, then light on] after the fade-out action. Otherwise you'd have to be still for a minute then trigger the motion again

So I am building my home so just planning right now. Can you explain in more detail how to make scenes and automations compliment each other and what happens when conditions conflict?

One comment. It would have been better if you showed how to do it just with smartthings and just with home asistantant and then set chapters so we could jump over whichever you had first if we did not have it.

I think its mentioned below, but for HA, you can create a sensor group. I use this for in a few rooms, where multiple motion sensors have to be off for the group motion sensor to be off. then for the trigger just use the group motion sensor is off for X minutes. also for the ST virtual switch - since youre doing the automation in HA, why dont you use a toggle input boolean helper? i use that with 2 of these dots, when the dot sees motion it turns on the helper, when it stops it turns off the helper. then i automate with the helper as a condition for off and can use turning on as a trigger (but i use PIR sensors for the on trigger). You can eliminate one system and one more cloud to rely on for the automations if its just HA to alexa, instead of ST tossed into the mix.

Hi Reed, just getting to this one now I know that I'm a few weeks behind but wanted to let you know that you can absolutely fade in or fade out lights in both alexa and smartthings routines. I do so regularly.

@@jstapjstapjstap in Alexa, try this.... *Open the Alexa app . *Open More and select Routines. *Select your routine, and then Add action. *Select Control Device, and choose your dimmable light. *Select Brightness. *Use the slider bar to choose your starting or ending brightness level. *Select Ramp to Brightness. *Add the length of time for the light to ramp up or down.

OK, someone mentioned to me that in rather typical Amazon style, that functionality apparently only works if your echo devices are connected to a USA based Amazon account. If that's not you, and you don't wish to go to the effort of setting up a 2nd Amazon account just for your Alexa devices then I've checked that both Alexa and Smartthings can trigger an IFTTT routine to fade the light/s on or off. Personally if I want to fade lights I tend to use hubitat or home assistant these days but I still have legacy routines running on both smartthings and alexa that continue to do the job until I finally get around to porting them all or Matter truly takes over and it no longer matters.

Hello I am new to having a smart home I live in an apartment and I have phillips hue lights in my bathrooms (2) along with phillips motion sensor in those bathrooms as well. I also have phillips hue bridge. I have smart bulbs throughout my apartment mostly lumiman smart lights. Do I need smart things at all? if I would like to add more automations? I have an alexa ecosystem I dont have any other motion sensors besides the ones in my bathroom.

I switched to using Presence sensors for my motion sensors. They've been really good and quick for me. Only downside is that the only ones I've found require to be plugged in but they don't have the long delay like the Echo solution you are mentioning here I'm with @Ken Kohl on this. Create a motion group which makes it easier and the group acts as a whole single sensor. I had to do this in my bathroom with motion detectors due to angles needed so lights don't turn off while showering or on toilet.

I have heard a rumor that there is some development in Home Assistant that will allow presence sensors to to work over Bluetooth. It is really inexpensive to set up Bluetooth extenders using ESP32s which have for me made Bluetooth very reliable. If this happens the low power requirement for Bluetooth will likely drive production of battery powered presence sensors (I hope).

I'm doing that for announcements and nags... You're garage door just opened... I send a TTS (text to speech) to my media player, (old model b raspberry pi running kodi Leia 18.3) then I got and grab the actual mp3 and move it to my local media folder (this way it will work WITHOUT internet). Create automation from scratch, choose sensor for trigger and call service 'play media'. Easy peasy.
