To this day Lewisham still only has 1 pump, an FRU and a command unit

Those were the military fire appliances/. They used them in the London Fire Brigade during the multiple strikes the unions used to call back in the day. They were manned by members of the military to provide fire service for Londoners when the firefighters walked off the job looking for more money.

If I had a pound for every hour I spent in the back of H21 (later E39) Bromley's turntable ladder, I could probably have paid my mortgage off a lot sooner. I don't believe Bromley has a TL these days - I haven't been back there since retiring in 2001 - although the original one was bought by Bromley Borough Council to keep the area safe. Later, the one shown in the video was replaced by a Magirus model which I'd qualified to drive/operate. Most of the equipment and some of the locations in this video were familiar to me and woke a lot of memories for me, too. Thanks for posting it.

It would be really cool if they somehow brought back the look of the Melton cloth tunic and oilskin pants. Of course with different materials though. We don't want them melting like they used to

crazy in those days all they had in the terms of protective gloves were everyday house hold gloves or gardening gloves that you pick up in B&Q and Wickes..

Gear to be cleaned BEFORE going off duty, not when you come on or it was nut roasting time from the boss. Neckerchief??? In our brigade call them snotter beckets to stop the snot running down your neck. 😀

Not to mention the two tone horn that was in use by the fire appliance during this era

I'm still alive - just and I remember the BELL that the OIC used to ring as a forerunner to the two tones and I must not forget the flashing red fire light on the appliance. The good old days!!

You generally knew where a vehicle with two tones on was coming from , more so than modern sirens . I remember driving ambulances that had both on and you could use them at the same time and it sounded very dramatic .

The shortcomings of the PVC gloves and leggings was revealed in a major way at the Kings Cross Fire in1987, eventually modern fire resistant materials such as Nomex were adopted thereafter from 1990

Might have been antique but we saved the lives and put the fires out and rescued the public from major incidents like Hither Green and Moregate etc., etc! We put our lives on the line for the general public - and quite rightly so!

Could be that the original tape or 16mm's sound track was in such poor condition the audio was stripped in conversion as the audio tracks were intermittent (I've experienced this with some old footage). Commentary sounds redubbed over more recently just like the music at the end.

The body is shaped like that to carry an old fashioned wheeled escape ladder. When they were replaced with the 135 (13.5 metre) ladder shown in the film, the ERFs were downgraded to Pump, rather than Pump Ladder. I remember complaints about the ERFs as they were cramped to ride in and firefighters had difficulty getting their gear on in the small space.
@EnidAgnusDei
8 жыл бұрын
Very interesting reply Freeganjustin, were they cramped due to cab layout or large engine hump? please forgive my being stupid but I only ever saw one ERF in action as a TL based in York.
@freeganjustin6699
8 жыл бұрын
They were just smaller than the Dennis's and Shelvokes etc the guys had at the same time. Cab was shorter, narrower and worse had less headroom. Made it difficult to get dressed for firefighting on the move. Some people liked them. There was a big order of Dodge appliances about 1987 that replaced the ERFs and more. They had a 200 decibel motorway siren that quickly had to be disabled on the entire fleet as it was said to be capable of killing pedestrians.
@EnidAgnusDei

Very good information there, I thank you for it , out of interest what siren was it? was the Dodge a good machine? always liked Dennis myself.
@freeganjustin6699
8 жыл бұрын
No idea what the siren was, although it was one of the first US style wailers usec in the UK. The Dodges became controversial as they broke the LFB's policy of replacement every 12 years. They were durable enough to last for 20 years and the union said it was a disgrace.

It has ALWAYS been illegal to measure distances along a Road in the UK in metric units. "Two lengths of large diameter hosecan be laid at speed for a distance of almost One Kilometre." at 9:40 NOT IN THE UK. It is only standard 3" branch hose anyway. Who are you - Remoaners?

The red hose is approximately 25 Metres long and either 45 mm or 70 mm in diameter . It is just how they are I guess , but it reassuring how even some can bring in a political and irrelevant comment into the most apolitical and informative video .
