I think it was a clever move for the movie to split the nerdiness of both kids. The computer nerd, and the dinosaur nerd, both turned out to be useful skills. At the end of the day movie-Lex's interest turned out to be the most useful because we already had a bigger dinosaur expert in Grant, while all remaning adults were notoriously inexperienced with technology. I thought the jock/nerd dichotomy was interesting in the novel, but it could have further redeemed Lex a bit if her interest in sports would have had any kind of pay out. Specially if she had been the older one (like in the movie) her athleticism could have had some big moment, sprinting a short distance to save the day, or swinging a blunt weapon with great force and precision into an attacking dinosaur (maybe a small one) buying herself and others a few life-saving seconds. These scenes wouldn't have been too difficult to write in the narrative as-is and would have greatly improved her likeability, but Crichton (no disrespect; a huge nerd) seemed dismissive to the idea that these normie-interests might be of any use in this high-tech science thriller..

Yes! Lex’s baseball fandom could have been put to service in the novel, if Crichton had considered it: she could have thrown a fastball at the pterosaurs, for example, and got them off of Tim, or something? “Swing away,” was a big moment in Signs, if you ever watched that film - Jurassic Park could have done it first! I think the nerd/bully thing was written very subtly, but it there’s to find if you dig in - frankly, until I isolated Lex very specifically I wouldn’t have spotted it. There are a LOAD of details that are in the text that would have been tremendously useful in fleshing out the characters and making them far richer - but you’re right - fleshing out the characters was never Crichton’s focus. I don’t think he ever lost a second of sleep over it either, lol.

I really wish they'd make a very faithful game adaptation of the novels, albeit with the actor appearances and music from the first two films. That, done correctly by someone who GETS Crichton, could be phenomenal. Sadly that'll never happen so Survival is what we can hope is good now. BTW I first read JP in the early 90s when was 9 or so - so Tim and lex were very much more "other kids" than "annoying". I think she's written like a bit of a naive child - which she is. Which is fine.

Thanks for sharing a comment! The park builder-style games have been fun, but I never really got into the "Resident Evil" style games myself. Turok and Dino Crisis were kind of like that! The JP arcade games were pretty wild, too. I saw a trailer for the latest game they're celebrating - looks interesting!

I think she was well written. She’s still annoying.

At first blush, I would have disagreed with you - but it’s clear Crichton was using her very specifically, and that she is so memorable in the novel (to EVERYONE, lol. Nobody comes away forgetting about Lex!) that he must have done something very right with her. And, yes, she’s still annoying!

Jeez, I can only imagine. How were the charts and graphs depicted in the audio book? The lines of code, the Iterations, they're so useful in the text!
