I would definitely say that the jeep is better in extreme off road conditions and rock 🪨 crawling. But I personally don’t enjoy beating up my body and rig in those conditions. I am more of a over land type of driver and the Toyota/ Lexus vehicles will blow the jeep away in over all dependability and longevity. I have owned a few jeeps in my life and could have got back into that platform. but i chose the Toyota FJ Cruiser instead due to my needs and use of the vehicle. Plus once I drove the FJ I was sold on it 🤩 no regrets.

imma go ahead and say driver-error here on the Lexus. This is our typical terrain out here, and you don't "send it" under these circumstances. Put it in 4L and let ATRAC do it's thing. The tire-spinning on the Lexus tells me he didn't have it in 4L, which would've engaged ATRAC. So driver error. Out here in the Mojave desert you don't trust your life in 120f heat with no cell service to a Chrystler... though many do just fine. But seriously, driver error.. you "send it" on very loose surface like soft sand or deep gravel... Also note how the Jeep driver takes the correct line..."sending it" will also disengage ATRAC which requires normal/steady acceleration to activate and stay active.

Funny to read people think the truck broke because of the driver error. Without the big gear ratios of the Jeep, the Lexus had to use a lot more throttle. And the IFS just sucks. Ultimately you can always say it is the driver error. But really, the truck simply is not suitable for this type of off-road.

Put a Toyota engine in the jeep, then you’ll have the best of both lol. But if you look at both vehicles over all, I would still say Toyota is more reliable and better in many ways overall. Both on and off road, especially since most of us use vehicles 90%+ on road and less that 10% off-road. Jeeps are great off road, terrible on road and not very reliable over all. However, you can always upgrade to better aftermarket off road parts for both jeeps and Toyotas. I think wheel hop played the biggest roll in the damage done. If you want to off road that hard, invest in lockers
@4WDisLife

@FuryonKnight

I think the statement that Jeeps are "Terrible on road" is a gross exaggeration, modern jeeps are just fine on road, and if your talking about old jeeps then compare them to old leaf spring fj40 land cruisers as they are both have the same on-road manners. As for reliability their are jeep XJs and JKs with 400,000 miles on the 4L straight six and we all know how tough their drivetrain is, Matt from "Matt's Off Road Recoveries" uses an XJ for his recoveries and you definitely don't want a vehicle that is "not very reliable over all" for your Recovery business. You can find examples of all vehicles failing if you look for them, such as this lexus but that doesn't mean they are Unreliable as a whole. And no I do not own a Jeep, I own a 2019 Power Wagon and I respect both Toyota and Jeep.

After years of Toyota experience I came to the conclusion that to put it simply, they are not engineered as well as the Wrangler for off road use. Toyotas can do well but with the IFS, CVs, power steering racks, frames on some Toyotas, and other things do not stand up to a direct comparison to the Wrangler. Not to mention cost to outfit a Toyota and the additional weight high and in the rear. I still own Toyota but the Wrangler out shines it off road as well as fun factor. And for those who say they don't do extreme rock crawling, in overlanding you come up against rock gardens from time to time that need to be traversed. In addition I have found that trail damage is much more expensive to fix vs Wrangler due to the body of Toyotas going all the way to the wheel wells. In addition, the additional flex/wheel travel of the Wrangler and the ability to keep all four wheels on the ground longer makes a big difference. There is no substitute for having the 4:1 transfer case for control up and down steep, rocky grades. As far as reliability, in my experience I had lots of expensive repairs to my Toyota.... leaking transfer case, damaged bed from flame flex, power steering rack, trail/body damage, water pump. I can take a stock Wrangler Rubicon on the Rubicon and have no damage as it already comes with rock rails and hefty skid plates, wheels and tires. Lastly, the fuel economy on the Wrangler JL with the 3.6 with 33s I'm averaging 22 mpg compared to my Toyota at 14 mpg with 33s.

Lexus/Toyota was designed to balance smooth ride and off-road, while lighter Jeep (especially Wrangler) was designed mainly for off-road. Thus, the Lexus/Toyota off-road components are not as rugged as the Jeep. For extreme off-road, the Jeep wins. For regular off-road and paved road, the Lexus/Toyota will win in the long run longevity. Since the GX470 is about 10% heavier than the Jeep, the off-road components should be minimum 10% stronger. 1) 100% agree. I would take a wrangler any day if I have to do a hard trail. Components seems to be well suited for rocky terrain vs Toyota / Lexus components seems to made for more comfort. (IMO) 2) As for the GX looks like it is non KDSS GX which I like where the sway bar is connected solid to the frame vs GX having a pin on the passenger side and KDSS ram on driver side which doesn't seems strong. Since the KDSS sway bar is not flexible like non KDSS sway bar all that stress is put on the pin on passenger side and KDSS ram on driver side. May be that stress cause failures in front KDSS ram. Haven't seen rear KDSS ram fail. 3) It is sad that GX have a very small gas tank for the v8. IMO GX should not have the same gas tank as a v6 4Runner. Should have used 2 tanks from the Prado. Having less ground clearance that 4Runner and gas tank skid is not standard is a downside too. Does 3in lift give same clearance a 4Runner or have less clearance since it has less clearance to start with? (I think 8.3 for GX vs 9.6 on 4Runner. Gx460 is even lower 8.1 almost like Highlander) 3) I was thinking to upgrade front axles and get a front locker. I wonder if that would ruin the on road driveability? At the same time would be nice to have a long travel setup like Kai but don't have much time to service / maintain a long travel setup.

Was this at Roush Creek? Interesting observations on the GX. I think the key here was the rear axle hop the driver induced created the window for failure as the sudden stopping and starting of the wheels movement overpowerd the 8.0 rear end. I think it is "Possible" to have avoided this with more conservative driving. The GX is a different animal from the Jeep. Massive weight difference between the 2 vehicles, D44s on the Rubi and a V8 in the GX and suspension differences demand a different driving style. I've had many jeeps and you still want to avoid situations where you have axle hop as to avoid blowing something out. Again interesting but I'll have to drive my GX470 much more gingerly as I explore it's capability. At the end of the day, the 2 vehicles have different use cases. The jeep is designed for more extreme situations but the Toyota is build with comfort in mind. I'm ok with not breaking stuff anymore as that phase of my life is over.

I currently own FJ, LX470, TJs, XJ, Disco2, D90, and D110. Objectively speaking, Toyotas are made to be reliable on the road and some out of parameter road driving. While TJ, XJs are definitely not as reliable as Toyota counter parts such as oil leaks, much worse NVH, and parts failing prematurely... Their drivetrain is much older school and made to take abuse much better because of it is old tech yet it works. I would take FJ and LX on a long road trip any day over TJs or XJ for that matter.
