leyland made both a straight 6 speed and a 6 speed splitter gearbox they were fitted in 6 wheeler tipper lorries they had syncros i should know i repaired many of them back in the 70s
These old leylands are still plentiful in jamaica.

Till this day ,we still cherish this truck in Jamaica. Back then, they would tune them & get more power from the engine & replaced the tandem lay-out with a dual ratio diff from a Fargo truck . My uncle modified his Reiver turbo so that it sticks outside behind the cab . That way , it sucks in more cool air to feed the engine. His Reiver has the 9 speed gearbox . It was one of the fastest truck on the road back then.

Some have good memories others have nitemares lol. 6 wheelers had worse designed rear double springs ever. There must have been shit load grease nipples both sides, and would wear quickly, crash box which occasionally would jump out of gears especially 4th, it was what was called a proven engine older guys will kno what I mean, would run with shittiest oil pressure going, rubbish heater, arms like popeye to put windows up n down absolutely no suspension on cab, drivers seat brick hard your backside was your suspension, fuel gauge was a stick to dip, rear hub seals leaked like a seive, power arms we had not power steering lol, but we learned a lot about real driving.. And these trucks gave us great experiences... I lived nxt to British Leyland in Bathgate where this type was made,my mum worked in the canteen handy for the odd starter motor which by the way was one of the heaviest started going, they also had the best kids Xmas parties going.. My dad had the 401 Clyde's Dale 20 pounds oil pressure with 30 oversize bearings, u couldn't get a modern engine going with that he then had 411reiver,..both tippers..

Your absolutely right about the rear suspension,the one I bought secondhand had been fitted with an auto lube which had worked for years,I got the lube system working and a month later everything had freed off and it was all knackered and collapsed with 17ton of sand on it in Liverpool. The suspension was jammed in the tipper hinges so managed to get it back to the docks where I had picked it up from,it cost me a fortune doing it myself,God knows what it would have cost putting it in a repair shop,with all the moving parts on that suspension they soon wore out if not properly lubricated, Scania fitted a similar system on their 8wheeled chassis in the eighties,those suspensions were crap and expensive to repair.
@stephenribchester2185
Жыл бұрын
@@davidellis279 There was nothing wrong with the suspension as long as you greased it regularly, it was actually very stable for tipping as you had support right at the back of the chassis unlike a single spring where the pivot was 3 ft away from the tipping hinge. We bought a new constructor in 85 with this suspension and engine but a zf syncro box and I fitted autolube to it. It only had the odd pin in the 14 years or so we had it and the engine did 1/2 a million miles and never had a spanner on it but then had to be replaced with a recon unit. Most reliable motor we ever bought but it helps when you buy one new and maintain it properly.

Hi, This video brings back so many memories for me, I was aged about 15 or 16, and used to travel with my uncle in his P registration Reiver all over rhe uk ,his was a flatbed carrying stacks of new housebricks. delivering to building sites . We used to start from Stoke on trent at midnight, to get down to London by about 6am. I did get to manoeuvre the truck on one brickyard, which got me hooked on these trucks. The sound from the engine was fantastic. Some parts I remember were travelling to London, dropping off, then straight over to South wales for collection, then back to Stoke , a full 12 hours work, all in ice and snow. Another time we were driving up a very steep hill somewhere down south, and were in crawler gear, fully loaded, and the engine was straining, and getting slower and slower, we had no more gears to use, but by some miracle we just crawled over the brow of the hill, very scary. Other times the wipers would fly off in heavy rain or the rear mounted crane would fail. One paddy on a building site told us to lift up our rear axle while on site? Not a modern truck then? he shouted to us. Your truck is really nice, and a rare survivor, keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next ride out with you. Cheers, Dave.

They are constant mesh gearboxes, you had to double the clutch to change gear cleanly. A skilled driver could change with out the clutch when on the move. This is really an Albion very successful design including the 6 speed box and splitter and hub reduction axles. Engine was Leyland 6.4 litre turbo 150BHP @ 2600RPM and 350 lbs ft torque @1600RPM. Thanks for posting.
