Yale Russian Chorus: Lezg'inka (Lezghian War Dance), arrangement by Serge Jaroff, transcribed by Bruce Lieberman. This song, not to be confused with the Caucasian dance named Lezginka, is a battle song of the Lezgi, a Moslem tribe in the Eastern Caucasus. Fairly recent converts to Islam, they were fervent believers, and were constantly at war with infidels (i.e. Russians and other Christians). When Georgia became a part of the Russian Empire, Russian troops had to cross the mountains where the Lezgi lived to get to Georgia. This song is sung by the Lezgi warriors during their preparation for battle. The words are two of the most powerful litanies of Islam, “There is no God but Allah!” and “It is Allah’s will”. The words are first called out by the muezzin - the priest - calling the faithful to prayer, and the song and dance become more powerful and faster as the warriors dance and sing themselves into a total frenzy before finally swooping down on the Russian enemy in a holy battle willed by Allah.
