LGBTQ+. I thought that same-sex couples were becoming more generally recognised in Japan, but after listening to your story, I felt that Japan lags behind in its recognition of people with gender dysphoria. In Japan, prejudice against LGBTQ+ people in social life is disappearing, but I think that discrimination in the legal system is due to the unique Japanese culture. In Japan, the patriarchal system is still in place and graves are marked with family names rather than individual names. Japan has a temple “Danka” system, and local communities are built around this custom in the countryside. In addition, Japan has an emperor system, but the emperor is always a man of male lineage. Even if there was a female emperor, her father was the emperor. I believe that the debate about whether society would be disrupted by breaking this patriarchal system is the reason for the strict restrictions on LGBT+ people in registrations. There are many people in Japanese society who take pride in having a centuries-old family tree in their temples. I think this is largely due to the fact that the Japanese are an agrarian people. However, I think it is time for Japan to change such customs. Japan is inherently a country with little discrimination. There is little disparity in salaries, and in school education, the emphasis is on education that reduces differences in academic ability rather than nurturing geniuses. From time immemorial, the Kokin Waka Shu (Anthology of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poetry) has included many poems by women, as well as those by beggars and prostitutes.

Thank you for your interesting topic and opinions. Generally Japanese people don’t want changes because it’s easy to do as others want them to. Also they can keep their existing interest and values. Unfortunately if we say something different, especially something to make change, we should be called left wingers. When I look around, perhaps changes will be needed by many everywhere, not only in LGBTQ rights problems but in women’s roles and status. As snafkin said, “empty barrels are noisy “ I think it’s true, while reading some.

Thank you for your message. It is so true that changes are needed in many different matters in Japan. We think allowing the diversity in the society can be a important change for Japan.
