I had Alpha smarts in Jr. High Clint. It was kind of a stop gap for a laptop on some cheaper schools. A student could sign them out and take it home to type an essay or something. Then they bring it into school and plug it in with a text program like Word open. Then, after pressing a button it rapidly 'types' what you have on the Alpha Smart into the document in a few seconds. It was an odd thing and something I had to write many, many book reports on.
@RandomBitzzz

Camoose yeah, I work in education and we used those alpha smarts back before laptops and chromebooks where around/affordable. It basically retypes the doc back into the computer, into what ever app you have open

I used a versionof the Alpha Smart in school! it was for children who had issues writing who were more comfortable with a PC so they could have somthing cheap and portable to take home and write an essay with and be able to come back to school with it to print out! This was back in the day when computers werent nearly as prevalent as they were in nearly every house hold.

The Alpha Smart is basically a small portable word processor. I was in an experimental class from kindergarten to 6th grade, and we were required to do all of our school work on an alpha smart. We used them all day in school, and we took them home at the end of the day. It was an experiment in comparing student grades and achievement via pencil and paper work versus digital work. It was a completely flawed seven year test, because we were still required to do each assignment pencil and paper for penmanship. Of course our grades were going to improve, because we had to do the work twice.

I never comment but wanted to this time, I used to be a Staples Electronics Supervisor from 1997 to 2001 and many of the things I see on your programs I used to sell, or in many cases not sell at all :) I forgot about the Ditto Drives and then Jaz and Zip Discs, these came out as rewritable CD ROM drives were coming down in price and many times after purchase the items would be returned due to it being easier to burn a disk then use the external drives. I have a suggestion for Oddware, look up the PalmPilot Phone, we never sold any of them and I think the two we had were returned.

I've still got one of those BFG PhysX cards, although it hasn't been in use for some time now. I remember seeing it advertised in the promotional bumf that came with my 2 BFG 8800GT's, and as PhysX was becoming more popular I decided to pick one up. It did make a fair bit of a difference in Arkham Asylum, but that's the only game that I can remember it making the most of. There were likely others, I just don't have a great memory. Still got those 2 8800GT's as well, which I put some huge aftermarket fin coolers on. Those were great cards.

Hey Clint? I don't know if that AlphaSmart Pro is the same, but they're effectively word processors that transfer data by _pasting_ the contents of the internal file into whatever program you're running at the time. I know later AlphaSmart models could also be used as a keyboard outright when connected. In fact, the AlphaSmart 3000 is something I want to go with my bondi blue iMac G3. They're definitely worth looking into for something like Edutainment Month, since they were made for the education sector.

I used an alphasmart in middle school. We would type up reports on it. Go to the computer lab open word and disconnect the computers keyboard. I think I've seen stuff like that word processor. My guess is that the idea is you type on it while out and about, then hook it up and it identifies just as any third party keyboard and when you have opened the text input of choice you press a Go! key and the thingy just dumps whatever it had stored out to the computer as if you were typing it from scratch, simulating the worlds fastest typing experts.

Ooooh. I remember those Alphasmart Pro's. Used to use those in typing class around '98-'00. From memory they are just basic word processors. No BASIC or anything of that nature. They basically acted as keyboards on connected PC or Mac devices and would shove over the written text that way.

My younger brother had that "Here Come the Clones" book back in the day. I don't know if he bought it or borrowed it from the library, but he was moving from the VIC-20 to an IBM-DOS computer, and used that as a guide of some sort. Not sure it actually helped him, because he bought a Sanyo MBC 555-2 in the end, which wasn't very much compatible on the graphics-end.

Top Gun, Fire at Will! I spent SO MUCH TIME playing that as a kid. Our Mitsubishi Apricot was not fully capable of running that thing to its fullest, despite it coming with it for free. I never beat it though. Got all the way to the last level and couldn't complete it. The game was terrible for arbitrarily failing you. Like if your wingman got shot down it would be a roll of the dice if they were fine (in which case, YAY! Onto the next mission!), lost at sea, captured by the enemy, killed from the impact, killed while ejecting...all of which meant you had to do the mission again. And you wouldn't know if that had happened until after you'd completed all the objectives and went to the "End Mission" option. You'd get a cinematic explaining the horrible thing that happened to someone who inevitably got shot down and then you tried again. That said...awesome FMV cutscenes and it also had Hondo in it!
