Lia, from Itamaracá, from Brazil, from the world
The Queen of ciranda, a performing artist
from Pernambuco gathers everyone in the circle, to dance, to play, to be happy
A Black Northeastern woman, artist and activist. In the current Brazilian context where, in a nauseating way, these predicates are used to diminish and, above all, exclude the other and delegitimize her voice, Lia de Itamaracá, at the height of her nearly 80s, is the vibrant voice of resistance and enlightened existence. Her weapon (and her soul) is ciranda.
Mixing Christian and pagan values, using the strength of oral culture and its power of transmission between generations, ciranda sings/tells everyday stories, while the body, assimilates the melody, moves, and reacts to the rhythm, but also to the other bodies that follow, the choreography that never needed to be rehearsed, in a natural way. Resembling a tribalistic ritual, the circle seeks its center, expands, and moves in another
direction. The succession of movements, of the coming and going, causes a wave
of satisfaction, of liberation, culminating in a collective ecstasy. Ciranda is action, transpiration. Ciranda is an experience.
Knowledgeable of work and art, the artist, who started working as a child and never stopped, whether working as a lunch lady in a public school or acting on the screen as an actress, including her featuring in the award-winning Bacurau, Lia brings in herself the transformative force of ciranda. Lia also started working as a social entrepreneur, promoting actions to improve the living conditions in her community.
Attentive to environmental issues, the artist collaborated with the development of periodic cleaning activities on the beaches of Itamaracá, raising awareness about the impact caused by garbage on the oceans. In addition, she was responsible for the creation of the Estrela de Lia Cultural Center, whose main goal is to promote local cultural events, inspire the new generations, and also, contribute to the promotion and diversification of tourism on the island, still very focused on the natural beauties of the island. Alongside these initiatives, the artist also maintains an educational project for adult training. In other words, Lia learned throughout her life to promote, through her art and the strength of ciranda, transformative connections.
