In 1854 the proprietors of Cally House closed the old parish road from Gatehouse-of-Fleet to Girthon Kirk which passed through Cally Park. In response, residents of Gatehouse, led by the Town Council, took the law into their own hands and removed the walls and gates which prevented public access along the road. These dramatic events led to multiple litigations in Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court and the Court of Session in Edinburgh and were widely reported in the press. Drawing on court records, contemporary newspaper reports and archival sources, James Wolffe, former Lod Advocate, gives an illustrated account of this forgotten cause célèbre.
