The Liberty Square Riverboat at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Resort (WDW) had been closed since October to allow for the refurbishment of its underwater track and other updates around Rivers of America. This behind the magic view shows you the completely drained river exposing the bare tacks. The Liberty Belle returned home recently to Riverboat Landing and a replenished river and is now once again taking guests on a cruise around Tom Sawyer Island.
Riverboat History
At one time Magic Kingdom featured two riverboats: Admiral Joe Fowler, named after Disneyland's construction supervisor, and Richard F. Irvine, named after a WDW executive. Admiral Joe Fowler which served from October 2, 1971, one day after park opening, until the fall of 1980, when it was retired after less than ten years of operation. It was accidentally destroyed after falling from a crane onto its drydock. The Richard F. Irvine was placed in in service on May 20, 1973 but was renamed The Liberty Belle in 1996 after everything except for the hull, boiler, and engines were stripped off, and an all-new superstructure was constructed from aluminum and vinyl. In 2018, the Liberty Belle was completely overhauled with a brand-new boiler.
The centerpiece of the cruise, Tom Sawyer Island, is an artificial island surrounded by the Rivers of America in the Magic Kingdom. It contains structures and caves with references to Mark Twain characters from the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and provides interactive climbing and other scenic opportunities. Though it's currently closed, it still provided a colorful backdrop for the 17 minute river cruise.
