I want to share my experience too. My lung collapsed spontaneously back in April. Went into the ER After hospitalisation and chest tube, my lung collapsed again. Went into the ER with needle aspiration… was fine after but then my lung collapsed AGAIN and at last the doctor decided to do a pleural abbrasion and bullectomy on my lung. Spend 5 days in the hospital with my 2nd chest tube. Now im feeling a whole lot better but still i have occasional fears of it coming back. My entire month of april was filled with pain and tears. Few lessons i learn from my experience is 1)pneumothorax can happen any time ( i was picking up a toothbrush from my bathroom floor when my lung collapsed 2) chest tubes are the most torturing thing ever 3) its so hard to distinguish between muscle strain and a pneumothorax attack… and it was hard to explain the feeling i had each time my lung collapsed. Each time was different…

After the first tube out they added another tube BcS I had blood in my lower lung and the first tube could not drain it…I still remember that pain and right now I still feel a slight pain and it scares me everyday…thanks for sharing it really helped out a lot. Going to get a X-ray this weekend just to make sure. It really scares me wish me luck

This was really helpful. Thank you. I find similar stories and experiences really helpful to hear. My left lung collapsed three times in 2013 and ended up have surgery. It first collapsed in the February and i remember going bavk out for my first jog in the October. A really difficult time. My right lung collapsed in April this year. I have had the chest drain in for nearly two weeks now. Going to the hospital later on for an x-ray to see if it can be taken out but i will likely need surgery. Its really difficult. I have a two year old daughter now who i can't pick up and it is taking its toll on my amazing wife. Thank you all for your comments. It is an encouragement that its not just me. My left lung partially collapsed around a couple of weeks back and since then, the chest tube has remained inserted. It is diagnosed as Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax. I was a bit surprised as the doctors said it usually happens to young tall, thin males with a higher occurrence rate in smokers and scuba divers; I thought I had a healthy lung being an athlete who refrains from smoking, but I know realize it could happen to anyone. The tube is still present and my lung hasn't completely expanded. Now considering VATS surgery to find some relief to this seemingly endless stream of unreasonable pain. Staying strong!

In my school days 2019 - A Boy Stabed Hardly On My Right Lung From behind...! After that I was feeling that I can't breath also pain in my right lung! And I also noticed Some tiny poping Sound Coming From that area! So I went to the doctor I thought my ribs got cracked or something like that - they did MRI And He Also Asked In between Do you have any problem in your lungs? I said yes because in 2012 I was suffering from Some Fluid Inside my right lung! - so I thought he was trying to ask about my past issue! And I also told him that in 2013 I was all fine with complete treatment- and that MRI man also said ok nice! And after In MRI report - it was written , no broken ribs, no disk issue , liver is good, kidney is good - everything is clear! But in reality is that - from 2019 to now I'm having pain in lunga with some tightness, needle pinch pain and now I'm feeling some thing is compressing my arm nerves and now it's reaching toh right leg also slowly slowly! I also feel some hardness burning like pain sometimes when it's getting worse! I don't know what should I do now! Or these symtoms are sign of pnemothorax? Or I should wait for someone to take me away from earth?

my story... back in 2013 I had my first collapsed lung on my left side resulting in my lung being half the size of normal, had a scan done and went straight to ER to later have the chest drain put in and was in bed for 2-3 days... a few years later it happens again on the same side so this meant I had to get surgery and I was already scared of that but knew it was for the better... after surgery I woke up with 2 tubes sticking out my upper chest and I was hooked up to pain killer meds with a button, pretty sweet I know... that was a tough time for me dealing with the pain and my lung healing as well due to having the talcum powder surgery done.... not sure why I struggled so much with pain and always feeling sick but I was so stressed about sneezing or vomiting.. so now I'm here in 2024 prior 2 weeks ago, I have another collapsed lung on my right side but this time its only 2cm in size but yet I felt pretty normal and stable with being able to take deep breathes in.. so looking at my scans I'm thinking ok its very small, so small they cant even drain it. so I have been resting and letting my body do its part and I was doing pretty well till I started to get weird neck tightness and a tiny bit of chest discomfort... so in my mind I'm thinking great, I need to go through surgery again with that pain feeling sick for 2 weeks... but as I type this I'm getting another scan in 2 days so I guess ill see if I need it or not but I'm honestly preparing for the worst so I'm mentality ready for this ride once again... but geez, what are my odds having both lungs do this to me... I don't smoke nor do I treat my body like S*^%... if you have gone through surgery as well id love to hear how it was for you so I can calm my thoughts.. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I had a spontaneous pneumothorax half a month ago (I am almost 18 years old, 195cm tall and very thin), the pain was so intense I could not stand up, even after taking paracetamol it didn't go away in the slightest, fortunately I decided to head to the hospital where they immediately took an x-ray and minutes after proceeded to place a chest drain. I did not suffer much from the pain of the chest drain itself, it was not intolerable but it was annoying nonetheless. I had to stay at the hospital for 5 days, then, a day before the drain was about to be removed, I had a second spontaneous pneumothorax, and had to stay for another week (the doctor decided not to carry out a surgery because I am too young). I came out of the hospital 5 days ago with the chest drain already removed 7 days ago, now I have to stay at home for a couple weeks. Honestly I went through a lot of emotions while I was at the hospital, and although I am better now, I still fear the fact that it could return some day, and I can't face the possibility that I have to undergo surgery. Anyways, thank you for posting this video and sharing your experience, it really helps to know I am not the only one in this situation. Also, excuse me for any grammar errors, I am not a native speaker and as it is very late at night I am really not at my full capacity lol

Hi khalid. i felt Chest pain and, for me, i felt upper back pain. I assumed it would go away in about a day. I waited about 3 days and it didn’t get any better. I went to emergency and was told about the spontaneous pneumothorax. i was first given oxygen to see if it would heal that way. didn’t work. i then had the chest tube. didn’t work. i then had the surgery. after three days in the hospital and after the chest tube removal, my lung collapsed again.. i was then in need of two more chest tubes. the final one worked. i had two follow ups two weeks later and was told everything was good. It’s now been about a week since the last follow up and still going through recovery however i am going to school but obviously safely. I also felt the bubbles you were feeling and felt as if something was wrong. good it wasn’t just me.

I had a collapse after a lung biopsy (on my birthday in 2020). They inserted the chest tube right away and I was taken upstairs to be admitted. Two days later they took it out and put in a new one as it failed to work. Once that suction started working, oh man! That pain had me screaming. I was only on a low dose morphine, no sedation, nothing. I was in the hospital for a week total. I’ve feared spontaneous ones since, but so far I’ve been okay, thank goodness. That gravel, bubble breathing was gone after about six months as well.

hi! just thought i would share my experience here. i’m a 17 year old girl and in june i started feeling pain on the right side of my chest and also back pain. it would go away in a couple of hours so i didn’t seek for help until september, yes, 3 months later! my lung was so small that the doctors thought that i would lose it. 2 weeks in and with the suction it slowly started to get better but it was not enough since my lung wasn’t expanding much and air kept escaping. Surgery was my only hope and i had to wait another week to finally get it. In total i spent 25 days in the hospital and i just left 2 weeks ago. im still recovering but i’m getting back to my normal life with very little pain. It was the worst experience of my life, never felt so much pain! i hope i never have to go through that again now that i had surgery! also thank you so much for clearing up the bubbles situation, i was scared that air was escaping again since they didn’t really explain that the bubbles were normal, i’m just finding out now! i’m so relieved and grateful 😅 I wish you and everybody else in these comments the best 💕

@@michael-qf5vk my pain was kind of like the pain you have when you’re sitting down for too long and get sore but way worse and mainly on my right side which was the side where i found out i had the pneumothorax, i would try stretching and massaging it but nothing would really help. If you have done an x-ray and the doctor didn’t find anything i don’t think you should be very worried since a pneumothorax is quite easy to detect on an x-ray but it’s totally understandable to be scared, any kind of pain that i have also worries me so much but thankfully is never anything but a scare. Still, if you don’t feel any better with time and if you’re sure something’s wrong then i would advise you to go get it checked out again just to make sure, the sooner the better. I had a traumatic experience when my lung collapsed. I nearly died twice while getting treatment. I was on many of the same meds you got. I had to have three chest tube placement and two surgeries. I recovered but it caused me to be med board from the army. The VA don't cover it so I got no percentage for it and I basically got kicked out for nothing. However I still have pain and discomfort in the affected area. Random stabbing pain and spasms I had my surgery in 2016 and I still feel the effects to this day. I still work but I'm afraid to work out regularly because my pneumothorax was exercise induced and my left lung is just as damaged but it didn't collapse. The doctor said he would rather I get the procedure done after I healed I refused. I want just be normal again.

Hi, I just had my pneumothorax surgery 2 weeks ago. My experience was different in some ways. Like you, I woke up with intense pain in the back of my right shoulder. My heart rate was 133. My normal rate is 67. Since I had open heart surgery 3 years ago, I have a heart and oxygen monitor always with me. I thought I had a heart attack, but with pain on the right, instead of on the left shoulder. Unlike when you have a heart attack, the ambulance and the ER did not rush me to the operating theater. I was informed that my lung had collapsed, wrapping itself over my heart, and causing the heart to be forced to work very fast. They inserted a skinny tune and extracted the air from the outside of the lung. Unlike in your case, they only waited 3 days to see if the healing would start. It didn't and I got the surgery. It was performed with a camera, the doctor cut the emphysema around the bleb that had caused the problem and injected some kind of powder to help scarring. I spent that week at the hospital, until the tube used for draining stopped draining liquid. There was no bubbling after the surgery anymore. I have been home for over one week, and yesterday, I started working for one hour. I think I will be working one hour per day this week. It may sound like nothing, but I got exhausted. Going to the supermarket also exhausted me. To all those who watch your video, I recommend you get the surgery ASAP. The before-surgery time was very bad. Thank you for your video.

Even until now, I'm experiencing chest and back pain, but not the "pnuemothorax pain" like. My x-rays shows normal, Alhamdullilah. My pulmo advised me that due to the unelasticity of the part that has been removed and patched up, when you breath in, you will still feel pain as that part will not stretch. He said that will be gone, don't know when. I was advised not to fly as well for 6 months.

I want to share my experience as well: so i had a primary collapsed lung i’ve never had lung problems or anything at all and i’m 18 but this all happened because of a heated altercation and ended up getting stabbed on the left side of my back which punctured my left lung causing it to collapse but once i was in the hospital they instantly put a chest tube in, and let me tell y’all it was the worst thing ever they did put numbing but i still felt the pressure of it being put in, so i was on suction and chest tube, but after that i was in the hospital for about 4 days because they said my lung was strong and everything was going well with my lung inflating so i got dispatched and as i was home i took the daily medications i was given and did all my check ups and all went well. for the sleeping part i slept elevated on my back for about a month and then i was able to sleep on my sides and on my stomach, all the comfortable positions that i loved and could actually sleep in. i was an active smoker prior to the incident but now im trying to heal as much as i can and im really bummed that i can’t do anything but i’m planning and trying after a little while of recovering. been out for about a month and a half now and doing well, lifting minor things, doing mini exercises and trying my best to get back into my daily life things because i’m not about to stop because of a set back i’m trying to live my life and do the most before my time is done on this earth 😂😎✌🏽💯 hope this helps some people or at least calms you down a bit if your stressing about it 😌😌 update: i’ve been cleared for work and it’s only been a month and a 1/2 and went in for a checkup and doctors said everything was good but everyone heals and recovers at their own pace don’t rush the process it’s better to be safer then sorry and i’ve been vaping and what not but for some people wouldn’t try and experiment until your sure sure, but also i’m stubborn and very hard headed but hope whoever is experiencing an injury like this gets better and heals well god bless you all💯🚀🤟🏽

Hi thanks for sharing your story, my first spontaneous pneumothorax was in 1998 I was 20 years old, 2 years after and a few more SP’s I had surgery ( pleurodesis ) unfortunately 2 years after i suffered more SP’s (it didn’t work) so I then had a second surgery this time a pleurectomy and removal of blubs, that was on my left lung. In 2005 I suffered an SP on my right side and in 2006 I had a pleurectomy on the right side. I’m 44 years old now and have no problems on the right side but my left has never been good, a constant dull ache, and re-occurring pain that feels like a pneumothorax, when it’s been excruciating I go to hospital, have X-rays, scans etc but it doesn’t show anything untoward, it takes quite a long time, sometimes months for the pain to subside and return to just to a dull ache, they have told me that there is quite a lot of scar tissue, but there is no option for any more surgery. I just wondered if anybody else has suffered the same as me? Many thanks Robin

Hi Robin, I’m the same. Had several pneumothorax’s in 2003 on the left side and ended up having pleurectomy/bullectomy in 2004. Several cysts and blebs removed. It’s never been 100%, dull aches and shooting pains from time to time but learned to live with it. I also go through episodes, one at present where it feels like I’ve had another pneumothorax but like you said, nothing shows up on the x-ray and it takes months to settle down. I’m 41 now. Cheers, Michael

I was in for 5 weeks. Chest drain failed, had to get replaced. Had surgical emphysema so it took 45 mins to replace. Horrendous agony. Had to have surgery, it failed. Pluradisis. Then had to have talc injected in to my chest drain. Then I had an infection. The talc pluradisis caused an immunoresponse and now I have type two diabetes. After having the chest tube remove due to a surgery not related to lung collapse. This was to diagnose endometriosis which i did not. I went to ER after being discharged. I was told to breathe through the pain and morphine or fentanyl did not work on me. I was crying and doctors thought that i wanted pain meds. I was so hurt and screamed at them. I am still in recovery. My right breast and middle of chest and upper abdomen is so sore that feels like someone punched me. I don’t want to keep taking narcotics as they don’t help. Motrin is the only thing and muscle relaxant helped just a bit. I am trying to see what i can do speed up the recovery. Blessings to you

@@thamimahmed6108 Cheers Thamim. It's great being able to chat on here as I found it really hard getting information from the surgeons in hospital. They were so busy doing the rounds with all of the patients that I only ever got a minute or two of their time. It helps me psychologically knowing that I might have a 6-12 month recovery in front of me. That way I can stress less if I feel things and just put it down to being normal so thanks for sharing that with me. I have been doing some brisk walks the last few days and immediately after them I feel like my lung is stretched more and I can breathe deeper. Each morning though, when I wake up I feel like it has tightened up a lot again so I'm trying to make sure I get a good couple of walks in each day to hopefully make the stretching last a bit longer. I just got outta this surgery like 1 week and half ago. The chest tube tbh I didn’t really care it was just there almost to no pain at all, just uncomfortable to move around with. I got the surgery done after my second time which happend about 1 month before the first one. I’m still in pain but controlable! When I was discharged I was kinda still on the meds cause they told me I still had a small collapsed lung but it didn’t feel bad at all. Once the meds wore off the stabbing pain came back and it’s not that bad, it only happened when I take very very deep breaths other than that breathing normal doesn’t hurt. My whole right side is really sore to the touch even after 1 week and half. Pain level is about a 4.5/10 when this was written. But yeah not a pleasant feeling at all feels like I had 400 pounds on my chest that had like little spikes on it.

I would consult my doctor before doing any of those things if i was in your place though! As for flying, i actually had my collaps while i was travelling! so i had to fly regardless, they recomended that i dont fly for 6 months however, i wasn't allowed to stay in that country for that time due to Visa issues. So i ened up flying within 3 months of my collaps, i was really nervous the whole time on the way back as they told me my lung could collapse. specially during take off and landing. Luckily it was all oke and i landed home without any issues.

Thank you for your video! I would like to collect some experiences from your viewers with different surgery methods since I have the choice between talcum pleurodesis, pleural abrasion and pleurectomy. I wondered if there are any long term (after a year) differences - especially in feeling and possible discomfort. Since in talcum pleurodesis and pleural abrasion your lung sticks to your pleura, I assume there might be a continuous discomfort when you twist your torso or take deep breaths. And since after a pleurectomy the nerves that hurt in case of a pneumothorax should be gone, how do you recognize a new pneumothorax? I would be very glad, if you could share your experiences, as I could not find any information about it.

Hello guys and Khalid. I just want to clarify with anyone watching this video that your oxygen saturation is not a good indicator of whether or not you are fine. Often times minor collapses will not affect oxygen saturation at all. Usually, a pneumothorax that requires immediate medical attention will give you severe symptoms -- difficulty breathing that is apparent -- while your oxygen saturation will remain normal. So listen to your body and whenever in doubt a visit to the ER is the safest option. I can also back this up from personal experience because I had a moderate collapse that still required a needle aspiratioin but oxygen saturation was normal.

I can't even exert a small pressure on it. a doctor once told me that this is pretty usual because my nerves have been damaged through surgery. do you have the same experience? or you don't feel any pain in the area? beside that the surgeon told me that I no longer can fly. unfortunately right before my surgery I had decided to take private pilot trainings. did you get the same recommendations?

Hey mate. I'm getting the surgery done in a week. I was told that I can fly in about 8 weeks time. Why did your surgeon advised not to fly anymore? I believe with the surgery we shall be able to fly?

I thought that a lung collapse (pneumothorax) was rare and that I got unlucky but apparently it isn’t, I’m just 13 and had a collapsed lung spontaneously occur about 3 weeks from now I was terrified I started to cry but the doctors and nurses were amazing and it went smoothly the only pain I felt was at home with the chest tube, I felt burning sensations idk if other people felt that as well but yea when they took the tube out I felt like free lol (that isn’t me in my pfp btw it’s a meme). I just felt like sharing

Hey Khalid, thank you for the video. I had my first spontaneous pneuromothorax 3 weeks ago. I was in hospital for a few days with a chest drain and slowly recovering. Similar to you I am someone who travels very frequently and long flights from Australia to the UK quite often therefore have had some major concerns and anxiety over my future lifestyle. I have since been referred to a specialist and now surgeon who is offering to do the VATS surgery either with pleurectomy or talc pleurodesis. They have highlighted some serious pros and cons with both which is making it very difficult to make a decision if it is the right thing to do. I appreciate you are not a doctor but I have a few questions to get your thoughts if that’s okay. 1. What did you hear was the main concern around flying? Was it issues on future flights itself or the fear of having another episode while on holidays in a foreign country? 2. Talc pleurodesis: they are not saying it does cause cancer but also wanting to take liability away from the fact that there is a chance. Did you hear anything similar when going through your process? 3. Pleurectomy: apparently can have some future issues if you need to have another chest surgery as it’s almost impossible to do or too dangerous. Have you heard something similar? 4. What exact surgery did you have? I am currently booked in for surgery in 4 days time but I am yet to make any decisions on which one or may cancel and think more about it. Cheers Jayden

Heya Mate firstly id like to say am glad you're doing better and done with the chest tube, that was the worst part for me! 1. I was told that flyng changes the pressure in the lung and thats why it can be dangerous to fly. as the change in pressure can cause any air pockets to expand collapsing the lung. 2. In regards to talc plurodisis, i really dont have much information as what i had is called mechanical plurodisis, which means they just agitate the lung and its wall till they stick back together. 3. i had a bullectomy which means they cut the parts with air sockets out to ensure no future collapses happen. But i was never told anything about it being dangerous for future chest tubes. 4. I had a mechanical plurodisis & bullectomy Hope that answers all your questions. And hope you feel better soon mate.

Thank you for this video it makes me feel so much better that I'm not going through something on my own. I have had three spontaneous pneumothoraxes now and everything that you said was so relatable and also reassuring. Like you said I didn't remember much in the hospital but, it sounds a bit pitiful but have a bit of trauma from my experience with having the chest drain. Can I ask which surgery you had as I am aware there is one where they use a cloth to aggravate the chest wall to stick the lung and then the other one where they use a powder to stick them together. I am considering having a surgery to prevent more from accuring but am a bit apprehensive to it as my upper body is still growing and if that would cause any issue in the future.

Hey mate. I’ve just had a pneumothorax on my left side and had to get a chest tube drain to reinflate my lung. This took longer than expected at around 5 days to work. I have been offered the pleurodisis surgery as a follow up.. in your experiences with others and yourself. Is this a worthwhile procedure to go under straight away? Or should I recover from the original pneumothorax trauma first before having the surgery. Thanks for your advice in advance

After a year i had my plurodisis and within a a couple of months all pain was gone and life was back to normal for me. Best of luck with everything, get well soon

@@pranaysharma8694 Hi Pranay, How is your sister feeling about the pending surgery? I was in hospital for a week with a drain in my chest before I had pleurodesis. Each day the doctors kept checking to see if my lung would resolve on its own. Everyday my pleurovac device continued to bubble (showing my leak had not resolved). I remember feeling really deflated (pardon the pun) and thought to myself that I just wanted the surgery to happen to get everything over and done with. In hindsight, I wish I could have just had the surgery immediately, as the week beforehand was the most traumatic part of my whole 2 week stay in hospital. I hope you and your sister can relax and look ahead knowing her lung will be in a much better situation post surgery :) My advice to your sister would be to make sure she is diligent with her post operation recovery. The deep breathing exercises they get you to do really help to clear the lungs of phlegm after the surgery. All the best

Hi Khalid, I had my first Pneumothorax right lung last november 2020, and now same experience again after 7 mos. I had to get chest drain to make my lung fully expanded and its been already a week since the doctr inserted the tube. The chest team medical doctors advised me to have surgical pleurodesis and pleurectomy. Im so anxious now, that even I wanted to quit my job now, After your pneumothorax and surgery, did you continue to work or take a rest for few months?

Heya Maria After my Plurodisis and pleurectomy i took a month off from work. I stayed home and just took it easy for a month. After that i went back and things where completely normal (i had the occasional bit of light pain here and there, but that kept decreasing untill it completely went away). Just take it easy if you can and am sure you'll be back to 100% in no time. Wish you the speediest recovery.

Great video! My pneumothorax happened because I had thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, it didn’t happen spontaneously but when they took the first chest tube out I still had some air so when they took it out my lung collapsed again but after my second chest tube it didn’t happen anymore thank God. It’s been 10 months and they told me I am good to fly that theirs a low percentage of it happening again since it happened only because of that surgery. I have a 3 hr flight soon, does anyone think I should not take that flight? I’ve been working out very hard and playing basketball and running miles and I’ve been fine as well.

Could you elaborate with the bubbling part, it’s my first night home and I do feel that almost as if air is escaping my lung and collapsing again but I can still take deep breaths with fluctuating pain levels and it comes and goes so I’m assuming it’s the bubbling your talking about as I can’t find any information about that besides it being pneumonia.
