A cardiac device is implanted to control irregular heartbeats and protect against heart rhythm disorders. One of the most commonly used cardiac devices is a pacemaker, which produces electrical stimuli to the heart to help it maintain rhythm. The total recovery time is 6 to 7 weeks.
Most patients can go home on the same day and few need to stay a day or 2 in the hospital. Arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital and take you home after the procedure.
Remove the bandage when your doctor permits which is after two days to a week.
Start with short walks and gradually increase length and intensity.
Avoid wearing tight clothes that could irritate the skin over your implant.
You can start driving ordinary vehicles after 2 weeks as long as you don't have any symptoms of dizziness and fainting. Driving a large or passenger-carrying vehicle is allowed after 6 weeks.
Avoid moving the arm on the pacemaker side above shoulder level for 2 to 3 weeks.
Avoid activities like vacuuming, doing the laundry, pushing a trolley, hanging clothes, or reaching for items on the top shelf for at least 6 weeks.
You can return to light office work within 4 weeks and heavy work after 3 months.
At airport screening, notify security about device implantation and they may choose to screen you separately. It is important to keep screening wands away from implanted devices.
Always keep a Medical Device ID Card with you.
