The Gas Co .My Dad -Arthur JE Newton, was with the L/pool Gas Co at Duke st Garston and Wavertree for 50 yrs until retirement at Hing St Works B.head in 1965.[Photos available] I can just remember his wartime Radiant House basement workshop in Bold st when he was Chief maintenance engineer from the 30s through the war. .The pavement glass tiles seem to have survived-then above my head. Being an amateur musician the 4;56/15;06 piano would have amused him. He passed on to me some 1st hand refinements to my fiddling from his working in theatre music hall pits. I have a 1946 edition copy of the `Co Partners Magazine`recalling Mr Leech [mang. director],Mr Fisher,Ernie Horder,Ted Finch,Bill McGuiness,Other colleagues were Barry Flint,Harry Hesketh,Steve Lowe, Bill Tucknot, and earlier friends from his 1927 days as a L/pool Stanley speedway rider! He went to work on his track bike with his plumbers lead piping around his neck! My senior sister`s 1934-39 childhood memoirs shed interesting aspects on his job .The splendid Radiant House interior is now a restaurant/food shop with some photographs of the heyday of gas appliances. The early Speke air show footage remind me of when he and I saw the French Birdman Leo Valentin plunge to his death there in 1965. Cordially yours P.Newton [huyton]
