It is not completely accurate. Tretinoin actually increases hair density. Numerous studies have shown this, so I have no idea why she is saying the opposite without proof (the proof does not exist). Retinol is even used as a booster alongside other topical treatments to treat male pattern baldness.

I'm a guy who swears by Tretinoin! My insurance covers me for two 45g tubes each month and I get one tube of 0.05% strength and the other tube is 1% strength. I use each strengths on different parts of my body based on what I want & need. I also use Hydroquinone 4% to completely even out my skin tone all over! This is all I have on my bathroom counter. 1. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser 2. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream for dry skin. 3. Cos De BAHA 2% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum. 4. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer/Dry touch 70 Sunblock/Sunscreen 5. Tretinoin in 0.05% & 1% topical cream by Mylan Pharmaceuticals. 6. Hydroquinone in 4% by Westminster Pharmaceuticals. 7. The Ordinary's Lactic Acid 10% HA. 8. Cos De BAHA Triple Peptide cream in a Hyaluronic base. 9. Cos De BAHA Niacinamide 20% with 4% Zinc in a hyaluronic base. I live in Oregon in the United States and we have all four seasons here - Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter. I use all 9 of these products throughout the year based on my needs. No matter wear I go, I am always told that for a guy, my skin is very beautiful. I'm 45yrs old, with zero lines both face & neck, zero wrinkles, microscopic pores, my complexion is one solid color from my face, neck, chest & body. Its firm (taught), very soft to the touch, dewy and reflects light because the surface is so smooth, especially after I shave which I do twice a week. Tretinoin truly is the Holy Grail of Prescription Skin creams and I'm so blessed to have stumbled accrossed it in my 20's and have been using it ever since. I have a baby face naturally, so I'm mistaken as a college kid all the time and I love it!... This video is so spot on, especially with not getting the cream too close to the eyes, eye brows and hair line (I got it too close to my hairline and noticed recession but stopped doing that immediately once I noticed that happening, it took almost 4½ months for my baby hairs to come back and then it thickened up after that).... Good luck everyone and thank you for reading my comment!.... 👍🏻👍🏻

The makers of the product claim “there is no solid evidence that topical Tretinoin causes hair shedding” or loss. Oral Tretinoin can but not topical. BUT it wouldn’t be the first time Big Pharma hides a potential undesired side effect so thanks for the heads up about the brow hair loss. They claim it can help with hair growth which i think is BS.

This was a very useful tutorial, Gemma. I’m 68 1/2 years young and I have been using tretinoin for years and have been using 1% the strongest strength for the last several years. One of my biggest personal fears is to have wrinkles! Not for me! My facial skin tolerates it just fine because my skin is very healthy and strong. I use it every other night. I love the diagram you outlined. I can tell you I am very careful upon application not to get it too near my beloved microbladed eyebrows. Your diagram shows me I am applying it too close yet to my eyebrows. Interesting, you do not apply it to your upper lip, an area of the face that is very prone to wrinkles and looks very aging if you do have wrinkles there. So I do apply it there as I will tonight. I also apply it on any outer crow’s feet with no problem and no irritation at all. Also interesting is that you do not apply it to the neck. I have been doing that. In two weeks, I have an appointment with my medical aesthetician professional for a Hydrafacial and I will ask her about the neck. Otherwise, I have been seriously thinking about the Current Body Neck & Dec since your mum got such good results from it. I totally agree with you about exfoliating your skin with an exfoliator. I have had combination skin all my adult life and yeah for me, once every 10 days to two weeks is just fine. I think a lot of women over exfoliate their skin. Thank you so much for this video!

@@sbvxvx I'm 56 and have been using tret for two years. I only WISH I'd started it at 51 (or even 41). I work at a large airport with 100's of coworkers. After using it about 6 months, people began coming up to me and asking what the heck I'd been doing to my skin. Then word got out and people began coming up to me and saying they'd "heard about" my skin. To be sure, the beginning wasn't fun. I used it sandwiched between moisturizer only ONCE a week for the first 6 weeks. Then I did it twice a week for 6 weeks and so on. Eventually (probably after 6 months), I got up to 6 days a week on bare skin. Oh, and I also have rosacea, which is why I went so slowly. When it was peeling so bad in the beginning, I followed Dr. Dray's advice and used a tiny bit of facial oil over my moisturizer and under foundation to lay the peeling skin down. Worked like a charm! If you're tolerating retinol or retinaldehyde now, I'd definitely do it! Good luck!

@@LolaB_AbandonedGeneration I use Curology. I did it through Angie's link and think I got the first order free or at a discount. After filling out their questionnaire and telling them about my skin free-form, they made my RX with an unbelievably low amount of tret (because of my rosacea) and added Niacinamide and Tranexamic acid for the redness in my face. My first couple of bottles each lasted MONTHS since I was using it once, then twice a week. At first I used the cleanser and moisturizer in the kit (they were good), but then only ordered the rx itself since I like experimenting with different ones. I like that I can chat through text with the derm if needed. I've requested an increase in the percentage twice and they agreed each time. They only increased it a little because of the rosacea (fine by me) so I'm up to .035 after 2 years. I've been very happy with them! Good luck to you!

Buffer! No one talks about this enough. If you’re sensitive or building tolerance buffer with a gentle soothing basic moisture cream and wait til absorbed before applying retin a. This is a game changer. You still get the benefits without upsetting the skin so much. Go slow and start with non prescription retinol, then lowest prescription retin a. Build over time, and love your skin. No aha for me - they trigger my rosacea. Just days on days off and stay super hydrated. Vanicream in US is my favorite retin A wingman ❤️

Great video, and I agree with everything you said. However, I have been using Tretinoin for years. I eased in with .025. Then moved up to .05. This helped to avoid irritation. With .05 I moved in slow with every 2 days. Then every other day. Almost daily but eventually I would skip a day or two a week to use a chemical exfoliant like glycolic acid. I would start out slow to make sure that does not cause irritation. Obviously you do not mix these together or use them on the same day. When I was using 0.25 and applied to all of my face, around eyes, eyelids, top of hands, neck, and chest. I had no irritation and I’ve seen improvement in the areas you said not to place it. I think it’s best to place it in these areas so all of your face, neck and hands match, just put less product in the sensitive areas or start slow. When I started with .05 I would only use the residue left over on my hands for sound the eyes and neck. When I went through the ugly phase and lightly peeling (which is normal) I would use aquaphor in those areas and that helped a lot. Definitely use a moisturizer during the day and at night. SPF during the day. Hyaluronic acid serum helps maintain hydration. Also try to add an oil like squalene or argan to maintain moisture before your regular moisturizer. Vitamin c is a very important ingredient to use during the day. Niacinamide is a great ingredient to use as well. Introduce these products slowly, one at a time over 6 weeks apart to see how your skin adjusts after the 2 - 4 weeks of Tretinoin ugly phase. Another way to avoid irritation is to use a moisturizer as a buffer first, let that fully absorb, then apply the Tretinoin on top. Once you have no side effects or go through the ugly phase, you can do it the other way around. Everyone will go through an “ugly phase” for 2 weeks to a month where you will have light redness, peeling and break outs. You have to continue to get to the “beautiful and clear skin side.” Then continue using it regularly to maintain the results. If you quit for a long period of time, you’ll have to go through the “ugly phase” again. It is the best skincare ingredient hands down. Nothing can top it.

@@ProfessorGothic Well, in studies tretinoin is shown to work at a certain percentage. If you dilute it and reduce the percentage of actives, you're not getting the effect shown in studies. Whenever I add an an active or increase the Tretinoin percentage/frequency, I get discomfort for a while until my skin gets used to it. I try to minimize it by using K and J beauty calming essences, serums, masks, layering... When it gets bad I slug and nourish my skin. But my skin always gets used to the next step and the temporary discomfort is worth it. Now I got to the point where .05 Tretinoin daily gives me zero reactions and in a while I'll increase to .1. I'm not in a rush since I'm only 40 and managing wrinkles and collagen well. Same with my Panasonic Vitalift RF. If you keep It at low percentages/frequency and dilute it, you just won't get the full value of the product.

I’d been using various retinols 5 years before, starting at the ordinary variants working up to Paula’s choice 1%-until they put dimethicone in the formula. I started trent with 1/8 of a pea every second night first-no moisturiser, then after a month 1/4 pea every second night and so on that I now use a pea amount every second night. On the alternate nights I use vit c with ferrulic layered with marula oil over the top for that treatment feel. But my skin has gone from stingy reactive red blotchy to unreactive even & smooth. I learnt two things about my skin in my journey, my skin hates fragrance and dimethicone in skincare (ok over moisturiser) thank again it was a very helpful video I wish I had when I started.

Yeah. At 60 I started obsessing on my skin and I too am kinda freaking out. Not using tretanoin but adapalene. Just went ahead on my own and I’m hoping I haven’t gone overboard. Oh, and I also was using a tube of flouroucil that was prescribed long ago for some actinic keratosis I had for serious sun damage from thirty years ago. That worked pretty well but then YIKES I healed for two weeks and then was determined to start adapalene and I reacted with the reappearance of a fifty year old pimple!!! Omg. Don’t worry. I’m mostly stopped and am just sitting here drinking water with Vaseline on my face.

Im an RN/esthetician. I worked in a clinic that sold Obagi skincare. When I was hired the Obagi rep asked if I wanted to try the system. I was 28 at the time, grew up in Florida on the beach so.... yes lol We did a vizia before photo. Outwardly my skin looked great but I had hidden damage lurking. I started a regular kit. She warned me about all the unpleasantness during the first 6 to 8 weeks. Redness, irritation, dryness, rawness!! I was peeling and red, while at work mind you, covered in spf. I was also doing the decolletage system, so my neck and chest were also just as unpleasant. For me, this part lasted 8 weeks. Then my skin started healing, no peeling, it didnt feel raw. It was pink for another month. It was worth all of it All the pain. My skin looked air brushed. Im almost 40 now and it still looks good. I continue to use tretinoin most nights, spf daily and reapplied. I use vit c serum or an acid during the day, somedays. I also use emu oil. Its kinda amazing stuff..💦

Thank you very much for this video! My derm didn’t give me directions this detailed. I’ve used trentinoin most of the last 15 or so years but I quit using it for 2-3 years. I became less tolerant of it post menopause and I got tired of constantly shedding Ike a lizard and breakouts. I still can’t use it like I used to. Now I use it once a week and sometimes 2x but I still get flaky but I’m determined to stick with it because I believe I have benefited from using it. I have tried layering and that has helped but I need to find a basic moisturizer-been using Cerave facial nighttime moisturizer. Thank you again!!💖

I was an avid tretinoin user but unfortunately got a breast cancer diagnosis late last year so stepped away from any type of acids for a period of time but I’m back on the band wagon again. My skin was flawless using tretinoin so fingers crossed I can get back to that! I’m using a brand called Kinvara (no acid ingredients) absolutely can’t speak highly enough about their products, I use them for the sandwich technique. The rosehip serum and precious oil are incredibly good. Thank you again for your words of wisdom x

I’m a long time tret user and it was a tough little journey for me in the beginning because my skin is very reactive. It took me around 6 months of trial and error until I found what worked for me. I wish I had something like this to guide me then, it would’ve made a world of a difference. My partner wanted to start tret so I sat him down and showed him this video and at the end he just said “I’m ready” and walked off to the bathroom 😂

Yep. Been using RetinA for about 10 years. The beginning was rough. My tip is to put lip balm on your lips before putting it on at night. Petroleum around eyes while you learn to use it and AVOID THE NECK. I use 0.1% now and accidentally brought it down my neck a few weeks ago. I learned my lesson by two days later. Yikes. I was able to use glycolic acid and BHA with it eventually but it took a couple years. Love the results and will never stop

@Siberius-

This was an interesting video. It's both more impatient in it's advice, and more cautious in it's advice, than what I did/do. I use 0.5% tretinoin (started on it. Which is fine, just be more cautious with the steps used, while the skin adapts). I started with 30 minute short contact therapy, then 3 days later, 3 hours, then 12 hours over night, then bla bla. Within ~10 days I was at daily use and then incorporating my acids back in. This video suggests going straight in with 2 times a week overnight. Which I could have done. I could have starter with the final routine and been fine, it's like applying nothing, but I wanted to be extra cautious (while fast tracking it because, no side effects). But then with the wet face and face map, it's far more conservative than what I do. I use BHA 2% and AHA glycolic 7% in the morning (applied to a wet face, always with sunscreen). Then at night I put on moisturiser after my shower, and then hours later, before bed I apply the amount shown in this video (exact amount makes no difference for me), WITH wet fingers for very easy application. I spread it everywhere except my eyelids, and my lower eyelids, but I get pretty close. Then go to sleep (after laying for a bit, facing up, to make super sure that it's fully dry and I'm not going to smear tretinoin into my eyeball). I've never had a single detectable side effect at all. Which is pretty neat. I'd step up, but Australia only has 0.5% now lol. Would have to order overseas if I one day wanted to do that. Tretinoin causing hair thinning is interesting. Not sure where that info came from. It's been used in medication to help with hair growth, and has been shown to work well when mixed with a hair growing drug (in a study). Apparently oral tretinoin has shown some issues there? but that's not the same as topical tretinoin.

I've been using trerinoin 0.05% for a year now for everyday. I just jumped straight in 😅. The first 7 months were tough, but my skin is perfect now. I use a simple skin care routine, I found this works well with my tretinoin use and I'm thankful because its saved me money. I use the Tony Moly Clean Dew Blueberry cleanser and tretinoin and vaseline for my night routine. For my morning routine I just use warm water, hyloronic acid and vaseline. In use sunscreen and always have for over a decade. This has been my routine for about 5 months now. In use sunscreen and always have for over a decade, I'm 32 years now :)

I am confused about the hair thinning. There is evidence that tretinoin actually increases hair growth in women with alopecia and it’s also prescribed to men to help with beard growth. I have been using Tret for a year now and I am so pleased with my skin at this point, but I have to gently dermaplane my cheeks at least once a month because I get extra fuzzy now. However my eyebrows are thin, but they have always been plus I’m nearing 40 so I just don’t know what or who to trust.

Exfoliation - all I do is exfoliate naturally in the shower with no product at all. After my skin has been in the warm steam for a few minutes and it has softened, I just use my fingers to gently rub off any dead skin. It comes right off and there is zero irritation. Then I use a gentle cleanser and pat dry after I’m out of the shower. That’s it!

I dont think you need to work on getting to applying tretinoin every night! You need to give your skin a break. I myself have been using tretinoin for almost 2 years and I have worked to using it Monday Wednesday and Friday nights. I save on using too much product with still maximum results. Also important to not that I’m on the highest strength. I have also been able to condition my skin to be able to tolerate it all over my face and even my neck. I even use what’s left on my fingers on my eyelids. Sure I had drying for the first few weeks, but now I dont even get dry anymore. My neck has also become tolerant of it, but be very careful, as the neck is super sensitive. This product will forever change your skincare game. Highly recommended but you need to use it carefully and make sure you take all precautions.

I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! THIS IS THE BEST MOST DESCRIPTIVE PRESENTATION EVER!!! (I sound like a teenage girl - I wish!) The comment about the eyebrows and hairline...I always wondered about that as - on top of aging - I was having issues there. I felt it was from the Tretinoin or at least, contributing to the loss of brow fullness and issues at my hairline - once super thick and coarse hair. I tried searches and found little to no information. Thank you for the explanation. The mapping on your face is genius! Have a great weekend...Carol

It might be helpful to viewers if you mention what country you’re in for reference because it can’t be purchased over the counter in US. You mentioned it’s available in either 0.01 or 0.25% (not sure in what country?) but in US, the prepackaged tubes of cream (all of which require a prescription) comes in 3 strengths: 0.25, 0.5 or .1%. It can also be made in any strength if purchased from a compounding pharmacy from the online dermatological consult services like Curology use.

Another important tip with SPF….do NOT think the SPF in foundation will be enough!! Just because your foundation has SPF 30 or SPF 50 does NOT mean it will give you that protection when wearing it as a foundation! Most people are not going to apply enough foundation to get that stated SPF…it would look super heavy, cakey, etc. So always wear a separate SPF! It’s annoying, especially if you haven’t found one you enjoy, which is why it’s so important to keep trying sunscreens until you find one you don’t mind applying!
