Hi Emily! Thank you so much for your videos! I've been an auxiliary (for French, since I'm from Belgium) in Madrid for one year, and I'm renewing in October :) You are so right about learning the names of the students, that's a mistake I made last year but I'll definitely work on that the year to come! I also can relate a lot when you say "no preparation but a bunch of games always at hand", it is definitely true! The "no pasa nada" philosophy is great in a lot of cases, but unfortunately it also impacts the organization of the teachers jaja :) Anyway, last year I learned to go with the flow as you say, to improvise in a lot of cases and just to enjoy without worrying too much. Enjoy your vacations!

Hi James, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I know how stressful it can be to move across the world, but you're doing it and that's what matters! Thanks for subscribing, I'll be posting more videos soon! Hope you have an excellent year!

I'm going into my third year. I love all of this! So many people don't contact their schools and I'm always like "oh my gosh!! They could help you and they want to hear from you!" Definitely yes to the coffee! Also even if your Spanish is low, try to talk to them in Spanish. I feel like it shows them that you're making an effort to communicate in their language! Also they might be great people to help you improve your Spanish!

Hi Emily, Thanks for your videos, I love the contents and your personality, you don't seem superficial, more like a down to earth person, no wonder you've gotten extended! Keep it up, lots of hugs from Canada. I totally agree with the idea of getting to know the teachers and others you work with, that can really make the experience unique. I have other questions about the program, like: how do you find an apartment if you don't want roommates; for how long is the lease; can you move out easily if you do not like the apartment? Can the school help you find a place? What are you expected to wear for classes?... And some ideas of content as I believe that since you have been there for a while you could give us great I sight! Other videos are from people were only there once or max twice : how safe is life in Spain; can you make friends with locals; DOs and DON'T s of living in Spain; how to feel more like a local; how not to be so noticeable so you don't get robbed or anything like that (maybe how to act, what to or not to wear to not make it clear you're a foreigner); also what scams to be aware of (when finding apartment, phone, etc); things to help you be less homesick; how to make new friends without partying (I'm not a party person); and other subjects about life in Spain in general, it doesn't have to be about auxiliaries or teaching. If you want to post more videos, I hope the ideas help you. In any case, thanks again!☺️

Thanks so much for your videos! Just trying to figure out the best time to email my school. Maybe late August, a couple of weeks before I arrive?
@LivelyLanguage

As soon as possible! And then call them once you land in late August/ early September! A lot of schools won't check their emails in August because they're on vacation.

Thanks for your video. I am starting in a private school in September. It's a little different here. I am in Murcia and all the auxiliars are from the local Expat community (I'm British) and stay at the school for as many years as they wish/are required. I have been looking for some tips so I appreciate the hacks. I am a TEFL teacher and in this area, I can manage anything you throw at me. But now I have an hour to fill using the syllabus in ESO and can't find videos anywhere. Maybe I will have to make my own.

Thanks for your comment Amanda! I have worked with ESO kids too, they are quite the challenge! I've found that giving them lots to do is key! Role plays, active games like Trainwreck or Board race are great! Check out my other videos for more ideas! 😘

I’ve just watched all your videos, I’m moving to Madrid next week for my first year and you’ve really helped calm my nerves!!! Thank you so much for making your videos... I’ve already emailed my contact at my school with no response yet~ if I don’t receive one do you suggest I just show up at the school prior to my start date one day? Or just go one the first day? Thank you thank you!
@LivelyLanguage

Thank you for your comment! I know it's too late to say, but definitely just show up on the first day even if you haven't made any contact. You could try calling the school any time in September when they start again - most schools in Spain are completely closed all of August. And even when you come in October there may be a week or so of confusion on both parts with your schedule etc. So just go with the flow! I hope you are happy at your new school!

Thanks for watching, Julie! Most schools are VERY casual, just jeans and t-shirts are totally acceptable. I definitely recommend comfy shoes because you will be on your feet all day!

Hello, thanks for your comment! There are multiple programs that offer the same type of experience: Working as an assistant in a school, and living in Spain. Most don't require Spanish, but give preference to those who have some level. The interview process is very different according to the program. The ministry doesn't do interviews, but some others like BEDA do, where they ask mostly about your experience with children. If I were you I would apply and see what happens! :) Hope this helps!
