Life in France at the house with a lake is all about embracing life in France and for French rural life nothing is more traditional than La Chasse, hunting in France.
La Chasse in France commences at the start of October and finishes at the end of March and if you live in rural France don't be surprised if you hear the sounds of horns and dogs closing in on their prey with the final gunshot finishing the scene.
In France La Chasse hunt wild boar, Deer and game birds. I have seen game birds and deer on my property in France but did not think we had wild boar.
When I bought the house in France with the lakes I was not aware of La Chasse using my property, by law la Chasse must not come closer than 150 meters to your house but as this place has 10 acres of land mainly woodland I guess it's not surprising La Chasse enjoy using my land particularly as most of the woodland is very jungly and a safe haven for wildlife for most times of the year!
Now one day I noticed a line of men with guns starting just 60 meters from my house down the private road, I thought this is not on knowing they had to be 150 meters from the house, so after taking pictures of the situation for future use if needed I approached the hunter.
He came out with a lot of bull to be honest saying that he was not on my property and that as long as the gun was not fired toward the house it was ok - I informed him that on either side of the road the land belonged to me even though it was outside my main entrance.
I demanded to speak the the head of la Chasse, he came around and knowing that I could put a stop to La Chasse because they were breaking the law was very amicable. Now not wishing to upset the locals because you never know who the people are that are involved in La Chasse ( could be the local mayor, police, or whoever) I listened and came to a mutual agreement that they would only come onto my property 4 times during the season which I agreed to.
This morning we woke to the sound of la chasse horns and yapping dogs, knowing this was going to be the case because part of the agreement was that I would be notified before the chase was to commence so I could keep my dog in the house.
This afternoon I had a knock on the door and as you can see from this video of life in France was presented with a gift from the head of La Chasse, the leg of a wild boar.
I really appreciated the gift and it just shows that in life it's all about making compromises - as a fisherman, I catch fish to eat and although I don't take part in La Chasse myself I like the idea of it, and keeping traditions running.
I hope you enjoyed this short life in France for 2023 showing the wild boar leg that was given to me from the head of the local Chasse.
