Food, real food, needs to be valued. I hope their govt finds a way to encourage more of the back to earth/farm movement. That countryside is so green, so beautiful. You can feel the peace of it. I hope more folks go and grow beautiful food in a fresh air lifestyle. The work sounds difficult, but it's gotta be a mentally healthier way to live than the crazy cities. My husband and I sometimes talk about how nice to have a farm, some sheep, grow organic stuff. Just to live in a sane way. Dreams!

In the early fifties - even while recovering from WWII, I found Japan to be an incredibly beautiful country. Rich in history and customs, the people are polite and respectful. It made me wonder how they could have had a history of terrible wars. Land is at a premium, but is managed to great efficiency. Considerng the lack of natural minerals and natural resources - Japan continues as one of the worlds top civilizations. Rick (Age 78 yrs) USA

Thanks for taking the time to show us the beauty of rural Japan. It's an eye-opener. I have land on the border of wilderness- that is where I and some of my friends come alive. Some people freak out at the vastness and stillness though. I haven't figured out how to afford to live there fulltime--- hard to do it alone. I'm learning to be a farrier so... maybe...

What gets me is the beautiful scenery; even stepping out of Tokyo and into Nikko, which is only a couple of hours away showed a huge difference. I have to admit, rural Japan is definitely what makes the country so amazing. I recon after University, I will probably move to a more rural area and see how life is there. The city is too cut off at a personal level, I think, as amazing as it is there too.

Actually you can live in Japan if you buy a house where it's been abandoned an restored it former glory? Japan country side is peaceful instead the cities are noisy and crowded.🇯🇵

Agree with your idea, but if they grow fruits, they will have to take them to city to sell themselves. Most fruits and veg come from outside and very difficult to compete with them. So, they grown rice and ship them off in bulk to the local distributor.

Farmers work hard in the daytime, so too tired to stay up. My farm is like this in the US. I only have free time in the winter and summer. Spring is for planting and asking my ancestral gods for a good harvest and fall is for harvest and giving thanks for the food. Summer is still a lot of work for pulling weeds and carrying water to the fields for irrigation. It's enjoyable for sure, but you would be too tired during the growing season if you farm like this.

Is there any possibility for a revolution to happen in Japan or anywhere in the world, that would inspire and even lead people to go back to the rural areas and forsake the big cities like Tokyo? I may be an English teacher in rural Japan and I live near rice fields. ButI would rather pay less rent here than to be ripped off in Tokyo.

So I guess there is no need for any revolution to have people move to the countryside. I live near a train station in a 1DK apartment, surrounded by dwellers living in 2000 sq. ft. houses. I don't know which of them were city dwellers, but I don't know any of them.

I wonder how they treat Westerners in these half-abandoned hamlets? I know that in the cities the attitudes range from polite aloofness to open hostility, but it's also a much more competitive environment and where all the annoying tourists go. I'm amazed that they're just giving houses away to anyone who'll keep the brush cut back and I'm even more amazed that this Australian guy has been treated so well. If they're relatively nice to Westerners in the depleted countryside, I don't think I'd mind disappearing there for a life working during the day and writing/meditating in the evenings. I've always wanted to try the ascetic life without having to join an actual monastery. I'd probably have to learn Japanese but it's really not that difficult from what I've seen. Anyhow, I'd be far enough away from the weeaboos in Tokyo that no one would mistake me for one even if my Japanese isn't great.

I am surprised how unmechanized the rice growing is in Japan. That is your problem right there. You have 17th century farming jobs competing literally right next to 21st tech jobs. If the Japanese government wants to encourage farming it should invest in researching small machines that are ideal for using terraced farmland. Maybe a combination of solar cells and small electronic devices. Even a little mechanization would really improve the productivity. Look closely, this kind of farming doesn't even utilize the wheel. It is almost willfully backward.
