@@ziggarillo absolutely. You are far more likely to be a victim of (albeit more petty, but still not very nice) crime in parts of Manila! It's just that the reputation of Zamboanga is of (thankfully occasional) kidnappings and beheadings!
@ziggarillo

@@KumanderDaot Actually Manila has a violent(not petty) crime rate of 70.27/100,000 whilst Zamboanga has 58.9/100,000. By comparison Basildon in Essex, UK(where I live currently) is 61.11/100,000. My name is Perry, I'm a Brit living in the Philippines. Love this kind of vlog. I have offered the chance to prominent vloggers to visit some mountain tribes in palawan. It is now heavily restricted to just a few people and tribal elders have to accept and accompany you. As my wife has close links to the tribe, we are blessed to meet with them. Unfortunately, none of these top vloggers were interested in this adventure, I guess they're too busy 'milking ' their subscribers for the usual tourist attractions . So kudos to you for your interest , keep up the great vlogs, Perry.

The settlement of Zamboanga is interesting historically. The ORIGINAL people were the Subanen who traded with the coastal Sama people. Then the Visayans came in the north. One group of Visayans (originally from the Butuan area) converted to Islam and became the Tausug. They conquered the coastal areas of western Zamboanga and Basilan (which was originally the territory of the Yakan) and set up the Sulu Sultanate. The Sama converted to Islam as well and became valued for their shipbuilding and naval skills. Some Subanen subgroups (the Kolibugan people) converted to Islam, the rest of Subanen refused, so they were pushed inwards. Then during the Spanish period, the Sultanates of Maguindanao, Maranao, and Buayan, and their Iranun subjects started expanding north and annexed the regions around Ilana Bay, with the furthest extent being under the rule of Sultan Kudarat. The Spanish also started arriving in northern Zamboanga through the increasingly majority-Visayan settlements of Iligan and Dapitan and clashed with the Moros. The end result is what Zamboanga is today, with the Subanen pushed to the highlands. That said, the Subanen DID cultivate rice in pre-colonial times. Along with job's tears millet and root crops. Along with the Visayans and Lumad, they shared an ancestral rice wine that is sadly going extinct today: the pangasi.
@KumanderDaot
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this, this is really helpful! Yes, I think my explanation was a bit simplistic, it's more that the settlers acquired (I will use that word neutrally because I don't know what actually happened) the flat land. The pangasi, I couldn't find any unfortunately! I was searching so much!
@AngryKittens
2 жыл бұрын
@@KumanderDaot I think the pangasi that the Subanen make today is made from cassava, not rice. Because cassava is easier to grow. Cassava is not native though and was brought to the Philippines by the Spanish.

I don't want to spread negativity but most people in Metro Manila got bad stereotypes in Mindanao, and something like maybe a bit of superiority complex because they think Manila is much better. Grew up in the metro and since I was a kid every once in a while I hear bad stereotypes (like the most recent one) and that really felt bad because my mom is from Mindanao and they are beautiful people with good heart.

@bizbo bizbo Don't blame the people of NCR if they have negative impression of Mindanao (western side). Blame it on the extremists and the corrupt leaders there for damaging the image of the Mindanao. It's a normal reaction from people if they see and read negative things about a certain area. Just like in Manila , people from outside of Tondo would have negative thinking of that place because of the many bad things that people from that area do. It you are an outsider , you would not feel safe venturing in there .. specially the notorious barangays of Tondo. People from there created a negative image of their place that's why outsider will have negative thinking about people and the area.. and you can't blame them outsider if they do. Similar to Minda , extremists and corrupt clans continuously damages the image of the western mindanao (and the whole of Mindanao) ...and you can't blame us for that negative reputation of the area. Subukan mo kaya pumunta at magtravel Sulu or Tawi-tawi and tell us if you would feel safe being from the lowland /outsider 😉
