I just got to the part where you talk about the journal entrees and Id like to give a 2 counter points. 1) The game was released episodically over the course of months so it restating the choices with little quips was VERY helpful to us as a player base. Many of us were playing through parts multiple times with different saves to get different scenes. And 2) The little quips in the journal/the way Max would write about events really solidified her character and made her not just a self insert/no personality MC. For example: No matter how you play the game or what choices you make you cant make Max hate or be indifferent to Kate/Chloe/Victoria/etc. because thats not her nature. You can make her be bitchy because she IS snarky but because Max doesn't like being too mean she'll always regret it in her journal. Which was pretty cool for the time since a lot of player characters in games are opinionless vehicles for the players Loving the vid tho! I just couldn't stop myself from mentioning this lol

I was just about to comment this! I also wanted to add that nearly everyone I’ve watched play the game has gotten confused and lost if they don’t skim through the journal, character descriptions, or text messages. I don’t think it’s detrimental to skip it, but it makes the game less immersive and impactful. The amount of times I’ve seen people not understand what’s going on when Max recognizes Chloe is wild. I’ll blame them for not searching around Max’s room as well, but Max’s writing is where most of the detail of what happened is. I like the video a lot so far! Great vid! I'm in a wheelchair,so I'll dive into your question. Among many in the disabled community,certain conditions are the "depressing ones",the "morbid marked". Technology exists to keep these individuals alive,but not to enable a full life of varied experiences. Full paralysis,severe brain damage,etc. In essence,these individuals are victims of the modern medical industry. Every moment of their misery is worth money to a vast network of healthcare professionals. They can be sustained,but never cured. That's the medical gold mine. Greed takes over,and patients begging to let go are forcibly plugged into tubes. This becomes known to other disabled who are asked to help. Every disabled gets asked once. At least. The primary reason that suicide is against the law,is to avoid the financial collapse of these long-term nightmare clinics. It's a tragic situation.

The great thing about LiS is that there is way more nuance to the final choice than people think. It's not just 'which one saves the most people'. There's questions about character growth, consequences, finality, universal fate, and destiny all wrapped up in the last choice. Hence why its almost 50/50 between players

Idk, Chloe was so rude and toxic to Max. I sacrificed her because, honestly, Max deserved someone better. I think Max's everyday hero photo was clever, with the lights in the shot, it almost looks like Max is on stage, and each photo looks like another face in the crowd, I interpreted the photo as "the everyday hero" as the one who feels like they constantly must be performing or the ones who have to keep up a facade, or image even when they are alone in their most private moments. A lot of the characters in the game spend a lot of energy controlling how they present themselves , and the photo is about capturing what its like to live with that constant anxiety of needing to present themselves a certain way. The mentality is so ingrained in their heads they feel like they are being judged on a stage even when alone in their own rooms

You can also interpret it as the photo collage being the "everyday heroes" - Max in the foreground facing away from the camera as a stand-in for the viewer, inviting them to focus on the many rather than on Max herself - to adopt Max's perspective and see why all these moments deserved to be immortalised.

omg I played for the first time last year and the way I was INSTANTLY transported back to 2013-2015. I was in HS at the time and was definitely a Tumblr kid. For me it was so nostalgic and captured that time perfectly. I love that Max is shy and introverted but still outgoing. Her being well-liked and being able to chat with everyone while still being known as a quiet loner really resonated with me. I also think the conversation with Kate on the roof is one of the most riveting moments I've ever played in a game or experienced in any piece of media. I really didn't know if I was going to be able to save her and the fact that I was able to somehow talk her down was such a relief the entire conversation was a blur; my hands were shaking and I was crying. I saved Chloe in the end because of her rant about how her mom deserved so much better: I knew if her mom was present she would tell Max to save Chloe and I couldn't stop myself. I think there's a strong argument to be made for either ending honestly but I couldn't let Chloe die personally, even if it meant Arcadia Bay was destroyed. I think this game will stay with me forever but I don't know if I'll replay it, at least not for years to come. I just want my original experience with it to remain intact.

I'm fine with Chloe's personality, but I think that if the story was stretched out in a month or something like that, instead of a few days, her arc would feel more realistic. But also, I think that a lot of people see a progressive queer teenager girl with blue hair and instantly have some bias against her, so they're going to judge her more harshly and be much more critical of her flaws and mistakes. She is literally the Tumblr girl stereotype that so many people on the internet hate, so that easily makes her a very easy target for ridicule, especially in this day and age with all the annoying "blue haired liberal" memes. So, I guess I'm not too surprised that people are judging her this harshly. I don't think she's horrible. She has flaws, but she does become less selfish as the story goes on. There is also another group who worships her and thinks that Chloe is perfect human being who has done no wrong. She's not an angel or the devil. She's just a traumatized and heavily misguided human being. Also, I find it strange that people criticize her harshly for the way she is but completely ignores the fact that Frank, a 30 something year old man, was dating a teenage girl (Rachel Amber, before she died). Chloe's flaws were very intentional, but both the game and the players completely glossed over the fact that Frank was dating, living with, and sleeping with an 18-19 year old lady who he (SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't played Before the Storm) had met when she was 16. I played the game back in 2019, and I was honestly shocked that I've heard almost nobody talk about it, and even now, I haven't heard anyone else point out how weird it is. Sure, he didn't kill Rachel, and he's not as bad as Mr. Jefferson, but, I mean, come on. It's an interesting double standard indeed. Why are we hounding on a teenager girl for being careless and inconsiderate but not a groomer who is well into adulthood?
@ciaranicole1334
7 ай бұрын
Yes, I love and adore Chloe, but she's nowhere near perfect. I see a lot of my younger self in her, even in her toxic traits. People are so harsh to her. @ciaranicole1334 and they are exactly because of her. People aren't "harsh" to Chloe, she just decided to blame everyone around her for her problems other than herself and didn't try to change her situation. You'll stay deep in sh if you don't try to get out of it, Chloe is lazyyyyyyyy. Ex: Max doesn't agree to Chloe's stupid ideas? Chloe Price: "Why do you keep abandoning me, Max? My life's so sad because people WILL GET OUT OF IT and come all the time, that's a normal thing but I'll use that against you because I can. I'm an ahole :(" That's how she is. Chloe doesn't know how to deal with her problems, she only makes them worse by giving up on solving them and acting all nonchalant. And se didn't have a decent reedeming arc :')
@llll-is6em

Max being a blank slate character that the player can fill in pretty seamlessly also brings as a consequence the fact that many players are quick to point out Chloe as a toxic friend and not Max, who's actually much much worse no matter how hard you try to play her differently. in the real life timeline, the one without magic timetravels, Max not only abandons and ghosts her childhood friend for 5 years after Chloe's father died, but also comes back to town and doesn't bother to contact her for roughly 6 months iirc. Chloe actually dies without Max ever saying a simple sorry for abandoning her friend, not because fate is cruel, but because Max is capable of being so cold-hearted. but if Chloe gets offended if Max answers the phone to her new friend in need when she never, not even once, picked the phone up to call Chloe when she was in need and suicidal as well then we throw away all the nuance and label her toxic because that's fair. so that's a good reason to play Before the Storm, if you have a hard time empathising with characters you are not controlling then putting yourself in Chloe's shoes could be a good experience. also on the word hella: it's implied in the story it's a word she picked up from Rachel Amber, hence why she hates it in the timeline she never gets to meet her.
@mynameisreallycool1
11 ай бұрын
That's a good point. I never really liked Chloe much, but Max ghosting Chloe AND not checking up for her when she literally moved back to the SAME town she grew up in and knows Chloe still lives in never really sat right with me. Of course, I don't think Max was a bad friend for moving away when Chloe's dad died, especially when she was a kid moving away with her family, but her being crappy and saying, "Yeah, I'll talk to you soon." and never doing so, with only Chloe reaching out to her, that just sucks. She didn't even try to stay in touch. I know what it's like to be the only person reaching out and trying to stay in touch, while your friend responds only once in a while and then ghosts you. I know that it can happen when the other person isn't in the right state of mind, or sometimes friends grow apart gradually over time, but when you go from them being your close friend to them instantly ignoring you completely, it can be upsetting.

@@mynameisreallycool1 it's one of the few defining characteristics of max as a character that is not based on player choice. i think many players simply choose to forget this part of the story because it's part of max's past and the narrative is about how max can change with the episodes. so some players think "my max wouldn't do that" and pretend it's not a big part of the story. and i say this because i identify my younger self with max in that point, and i recognise it is a big flaw that hurts others.

Max moves back to Arcadia Bay at the start of September, and the game takes place over her 6th week there. And Max ghosting Chloe isn't because she doesn't care about Chloe; it's because she doesn't know what to say or how to say it, and didn't want to hurt Chloe by saying the wrong thing, so she put off writing and then it had been a few weeks and she'd have to start her message with an apology for not having been in contact, and it was easier to just put it off for a few more days, and then it had been a few months and it was only getting harder to sit down and write anything... And then it's been five years, and Max is going back to Arcadia Bay and it'll be easier to tell Chloe in person than write anything, and Max is looking forward to getting to hang out with Chloe again, but making that first move would mean that confrontation about never having written, and it only makes sense to get settled in at Blackwell first, and then there's homework to do and making friends with Kate and Warren and they want to hang out, and it can always be put off for another day or two... Maybe she'd have reached out to Chloe just before the semester break when she had to act immediately or accept putting it off until she got back from Seattle (particularly if she thought someone would ask about how Chloe was) or maybe she wouldn't. That's not to say it's okay that she ghosted Chloe, just that it's Max being too afraid of a difficult situation and of making things worse by doing something wrong, rather than her not caring about Chloe. I forget whether there's support for this in canon, but, in my head, Max's parents didn't approve of Chloe Price, so, rather than encouraging Max to stay in touch, they quietly approved, and maybe even encouraged, Max's procrastination - it wouldn't take much, just responding to Max saying "I should write to Chloe this afternoon" with "we thought we'd take you to {local landmark} this afternoon" or similar.

There's a sense of internalized misogyny surrounding Chloe haters where if a male character like Walter White has the same type of toxic behavior, then he's considered a cool character to look up to, but if it's a female character, then she's met with negative scrutiny. Chloe's toxicity is the whole point of the game's narrative because she's an endurance test on how much the player is willing to tolerate her before deciding her fate in the finale.

Life is Strange is one of my top 10 favorite games ever. My biggest sticking point with Life is Strange is the sacrifice Arcadia Bay ending. Not because I don't think it's valid, actually the opposite of that. I think saving Chloe is very valid, but that ending pales in comparison to saving Arcadia in terms of quality of the cinematic. The sacrifice Chloe ending, or Bay ending, is beautiful and expertly crafted. All the narrative beats are timed to Spanish Sahara by The Foals,a unique song for this ending. The visuals are beautiful, and overall the sequence is incredibly emotionally effective. It takes you through a journey of emotions, from devastation at Chloe's death to hope for the future. The sacrifice Arcadia, or Bae ending is much shorter, reuses the song Obstacles by Syd Matters that capped off episode one, and just doesn't feel nearly as impactful. You see that the town is a wreck but you dont feel the loss of all the people sacraficed to the storm. Max and especially Chloe barely react to the devastation and loss of so many people, of the town they grew up in. Because of that, it feels like there aren't any real consequences for their actions. It just doesn't feel correct. It makes me upset because the endings should be of equal quality because both choices are valid. No matter your choice, you should get to have an ending that explores the good and bad consequences of that choice. I think the Bay ending does that very well. I wish I could say the same for the Bae ending.

This is one of my favorite games in the genre, warts and all and I still think about the characters and story a lot. I played through some of 2 but to me at least it didn't capture the VIBE of this game at least to me and True Colors was a fun little jaunt to play through. The studios other game Tell Me Why was also fun to play through but a majority of the characters and sometimes predictable story fell flat for me. I'd say you should play Before the Storm as while it does sort of explain some characters a bit more, others are still mysterious even if they are elaborated on and the ending really hits you in the gut after playing Life is Strange. Also looking forward to you hopefully doing more videos on other narrative games!

LIS1 is definitely the best one of the bunch. Before the Storm honestly made a lot of stuff from LIS1 feel less effective in a weird way. Rachel seemed really mysterious and alluring in LIS1 and while she's still supposed to be that in BTS, she seems to lose a lot of that characterization. Aside characters like David also completely losing their development which is what made him so great (he's actually somewhat reasonable in BTS and you get multiple choices to make amends with him but none of those matter as David is always at a complete negative at the start of LIS1, which is the entire point of his character. A lot of people hate on him but his writing was definitely good in LIS1 and was tarnished in BTS). A lot of choices in BTS don't seem to matter so much or just feel oddly connected together. I also thought that Eliot was an entire waste of a character, when he actually had a good point about Rachel being alluring and dangerous, but the writers decided to make him selfish and a creep...which, well, threw his good point out of the window. I'd rather BTS never existed because part of what made LIS1 so great was the more mysterious aspect of Chloe's past and especially Rachel or the other mysteries and relationships in Arcadia Bay, got mostly tampered with in BTS and if you play BTS first and then switch to LIS1, it just somewhat feels less effective (at least to me). LIS2 is...man, so much wasted potential. Episode 1 was definitely the best. Lyla got tossed aside and turned into an irrelevant character despite being the best one the game had to offer. Episode 4 was so weird. Sean having to do a dramatic, edgy speech to convinced a 'bRaiNWaShED' Daniel while repeatedly getting knocked down as the useless mom does jack shit was the scene that got me "okay, what am I even watching right now" and it really showed. Some people may have loved that scene but I still think Episode 4 is probably the worst one. Again, LIS2 had a lot of potential but it executed a ton of stuff weirdly. Captain Spirit was great, though (and speaking of, they really butchered the abuse theme in Episode 2, it's even worse if Chris dies). True Colors had a bunch of cut content and story re-writes that still somewhat remain in the final. Most of this stuff was revealed on developer streams, but there was stuff like Gabe being an abusive husband towards Charlotte, Charlotte being Jed's adopted daughter (which is why he gives her free grub in Episode 1), Mac originally ignoring Ryan's call on purpose because he hated Gabe which got retconned, Diane always being the main villain as shown in the Episode 2 ending, Diane telling Pike to follow Alex in the mines and get rid of her if Alex takes Pike's fear, and so on... True Colors mostly just suffered because of Alex's inconsistent powers and the fact that everyone is shitting on Alex even though she's the one that deserves to grieve the most, and how she keeps having to help everyone else and take shit from the others. The council vote in the final episode was also completely useless as there's only 2 endings that depend on Ryan or Steph (also, what the hell, where's the option for Alex to remain single? Even TWDS4 had that option for Clementine...). True Colors just didn't really have that much purpose in the story as it was constantly getting sidetracked and confused on what it wanted to do, then we get a dream sequence where Alex has to 'act' her part on her life even though she...already went through these points? It was pretty odd. Honestly, the only great part about True Colors was the Eleanor dementia sequence, that scene was fire. Too bad we barely got anything else like that again. So yeah, in short, BTS made everything that LIS1 did well way less effective in my book. I used to kind of rag on Chloe for being such a controversial character, but then I realized that the reason why I felt this way was mostly because of what BTS handled so carelessly. Everything that I found interesting about Rachel and Chloe in LIS1 was tainted in BTS because of odd writing and messy characterization. Most people in the fandom tend to love the fanservicey aspect of the relationships but I think everyone could look at it more from a writing standpoint and see what went wrong and what didn't. Lovely video, btw :)

I've been waiting for this video ever since you announced it on patreon, and I wanted to watch it through a few times before commenting. The series means a lot to me, especially the first and second games. It's hard for me to pick a favorite between them, I love them both for very different reasons. Before the Storm is my least favorite in the series, with True Colors just a bit above it. There's something really special about the ones made by DontNod. I think 'a janky masterpiece' is a pretty apt way to describe it, even if I don't agree with all of your criticisms haha. It's certainly not perfect, but some things that get commonly criticized - like the dialogue - has never been something that bothered me. There are some awkward lines here or there, but a lot of the cringe is intentional. I remember seeing an interview from the head writer, Christian Divine, where he said something to the effect of "of course it's cringy, teenagers are very cringy". This doesn't mean the slang was always used in the best way, but overall I think a lot of the dialogue feels strangely authentic in its cringe. Hell, reading Max's diary gave me second hand embarrassment because several passages or phrases felt like they were ripped from my own teenage journal. Speaking of the journal, I do agree that it could have been improved a lot and given us more of Max's thoughts instead of just recapping, but I also agree with others who have pointed out that it does have more going for it. One of my favorite bits from the journal is Max mentioning an old Star Trek episode where Kirk chose to sacrifice the woman he loved for the sake of the world. And Max comments on how fucked up it was for him to make that choice. On on the note of the alternate reality Chloe in a wheelchair...I am not disabled, so from what I've seen online there's been some mixed feelings from people who are disabled. Some of that conversation is already happening in the comments, but there is one thing that I haven't seen brought up. When I've seen these conversations happen before, it's usually made it a point that it's important to remember Chloe is also *actively dying.* It doesn't erase any of the criticisms about how her disability is handled or anything like that, but I do know that it adds a very different context to the situation. The situation isn't just about Chloe being in a wheelchair: she is in constant pain and slowly dying. From from what I've read by other disabled people talking about it, the fact that Chloe is actively dying and needs regular morphine drips to not be in horrible pain adds another dimension to the discussion. So it's a different situation from say...something like that Detective Pikachu movie where the villain's motivation is that he's miserable because he's paralyzed (but is in good health). That's all I'll say about it. Anyway, I knew you would be a Chloe defender! It's very satisfying to see. I think she's really great and well written, and the dynamic her and Max have really works in how they challenge each other and make the other move forward. As for the ending...I'm the rare fan who thinks both ending choices are valid. Some people get really weird and defensive about it, but both choices make sense to me. That being said, I do always sacrifice the Bay, and not Chloe. For one, I just personally find it to be the more interesting choice. Time travel stories about ultimately letting a loved one die are fairly common, and that's not a bad thing, but it's something I'm very used to. So instead having the story end with the main character basically saying "fuck that", is very interesting and different, and I like that it's presented as a valid choice for her to make. On top of that, to me it's always felt like the choice Max would make herself. Whether you choose to romance Chloe or not, Max has come to realize just how much she loves Chloe and how much she is willing to do for her. Choosing Chloe over everything in this moment feels like a natural progression of that. I also think it does work thematically with Max's character arc. A lot of her arc is about coming around to accepting negative consequences, both because of her own actions and just in general. The way she ghosted Chloe for years, and the way she utilizes her power most of the game, involves her trying to avoid negative outcomes. When such a thing is ultimately impossible, and often comes back much worse the harder she tries to avoid it. Hell, you could argue that going back and letting Chloe die is just another way that Max is avoiding the negative consequences of her actions, while not going back is accepting what her choices have done. Ultimately both options are about her accepting a negative outcome, it's just choosing which she can ultimately live with (or can't live without). Well, this comment is turning into an essay all on it's own. Really enjoyed the video, and I'm looking forward to what you do next! And hopefully you'll maybe do more LiS content in the future.

if you liked the first life is strange i would heartily recommend Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. It's a compilation of two visual novels with a lot of similar elements to life is strange (main focus is the narrative and how your choice influence the course of the story, peppered in with escape room-style puzzles) and it also takes the player's ability to go back to a previous game state and incorporating it into the story.
@rmsgrey

The one word of caution I'd offer is that the Nonary Games have a consistently darker tone - the first game, fairly early on, has a visceral description of the remains of someone who was killed by a bomb in their stomach. The second game tones down the gore, and the third game of the series dials up the gore to the point of ludicrousness, so it's only really the first game where the gore bothers me, but all three games revolve around a cast of characters forced to play a game where failure means an unpleasant death, so there's a constant immediate threat. They're hella good (except the third, which is only okay), but they're not for everyone.

A few points where I disagree with the video or have my own take (mostly I agree with the video): - the Diary provides a bit of insight into Max's character by giving her interpretation of the events you just witnessed as a player, and her opinions of the characters you've seen her interacting with, but it also serves a key gameplay function as a log for the player to keep track of what's been happening if for any reason they have to take a lengthy break between play sessions - like, for instance, the next episode not releasing for another three months... If you play through the entire game over the course of a week or so, sure, the diary isn't great, but if you take 9 months to complete the game because you picked up Episode 1 at launch in January 2015 but Episode 5 didn't release until October (or because you have a busy life and only occasionally get chances to play), being able to check the diary rather than having to restart the game to remember what was going on was a godsend. - It's a minor nitpick, but you can encounter Kate Marsh briefly later in Episode 2: she's talking to Mr Jefferson outside the classroom when you turn up before class before she runs off in tears to climb to the student dorm roof. - When it comes to Chloe's assisted suicide, the issue isn't that she's disabled - that's just the reason she can't see to it for herself - it's that she is unequivocally dying, and all she has left to look forward to is a month or two of increasing discomfort as she completely bankrupts her parents paying to stretch out her death as long as possible. The message isn't "being disabled means there's nothing to live for"; it's "my death is inevitable and delaying it longer only harms the people I love". - I have issues with the ending of Life Is Strange. Firstly, I don't think the game does enough to establish that letting Chloe die would prevent the storm - the very opening of the game, before Max wakes up in the classroom for the very first time, before she sees the butterfly, before she sees Chloe get shot, is a vision of the storm. One of the messages of Episode 5 is that Max messing with time only makes the storm worse. So suddenly we're told that messing with time yet again is going to magically fix everything? Of course, if you pick that ending (or look it up) you encounter my second issue: letting Chloe die means a magical happy ending for everyone (except her parents and the bad guys) - Nathan and Jefferson get arrested, Kate doesn't get pushed to attempt suicide, and all the good you struggled so hard to do during the game would have happened anyway if only you hadn't intervened and tried to make a difference. Which seems like a terrible message, but there it is: don't try to make things better; you'll only summon a magical storm to flatten an entire town. And my third problem was mentioned in the video - the final choice erases all your earlier decisions in the game. Managed to rescue Alyssa in the first four episodes so you could rescue her from the storm in passing during the final episode? Doesn't matter - by using Warren's photo to help Chloe survive the previous night, you changed history so you weren't there to rescue her after all. Kept Lisa alive? The storm flattens your dorm and kills her. Made friends or enemies with Victoria? I'm sure her corpse cares a lot. Joyce, Frank and Warren? Blown up in the Two Whales when you weren't there to extinguish the fire. And if you go back to sacrifice Chloe instead of letting the storm wipe all evidence of your activities away, then you significantly change events before you'd made any choices (or possibly after you'd messed with time in order to impress Mr Jefferson in the classroom so you could get to the bathroom in time to witness Chloe's death, but that messing with time apparently doesn't cause any issues...) so nothing that happened in the game since that moment is still valid (and, apparently, nor are some things from before that moment).

i'm the biggest defender of life is strange dialogue because i think it's genuinely a good depiction of how cringey hipster art kids talked in the early 2010s. max calling eggs 'eggy wegs' and doing a gollum impression to herself will always be the funniest shit. more media needs to be this genuine in its dialogue instead of making characters sound cooler than they actually would be. truly a time capsule of an era. in a modern version of life is strange chloe would say based all the time and call herself the rizzler. nobody in real life sounds as cool as they think they do. i'm also the biggest defender of life is strange 2 because i don't think people appreciate that game in general enough. sean and daniel mean a lot to me, i connected with the game in different ways from the original, but it means just as much to me. people at the time were disappointed it wasn't a continuation of the original story and i think that hurt its reputation but to me it's something really special. oh and i really love max. she's a flawed character full of so much depth that often doesn't get recognized because she serves as the self-insert protagonist. she really doesn't understand herself very well, she's often misguided and self-centered in a way that tends to be obscured by her anxiety, and a lot of the things we hear her think about her relationships with the people around her are just flat out wrong. she has no idea what anyone in her school actually thinks of her. people miss a lot when they take max's thoughts at face value. she's very much her own person. you get to make choices, but you can't make her do things she'd never do. as players we just get to point her in the right direction. i think people who tend to see her as a blank slate are people who are actually a lot like max, they're just seeing a blank slate because all the unique traits of her character feel so normal to them. and, well, they didn't feel normal to me, i don't relate to max much at all. she was always doing things i'd never do. she's always felt like a whole and unique character to me. meanwhile in before the storm, most of what i could do as chloe felt totally natural to me. it was like playing a game as myself. after playing before the storm, i actually ended up kinda hating max for a while. reading the texts of her ghosting chloe and reading all those journal entries chloe wrote as letters to max really hurt. it was personal to me, i was going through a similar thing at the time with someone similar to max. i really related to chloe a lot. the way i felt chloe's pain with her made me a bigger fan of before the storm than most people. and it took me a few years to start liking max's character again and appreciate her complexity despite her flaws. also, kate's death had a huge impact on me. i wasn't able to save her. i sat there thinking about it for hours afterwards, it really hurt. waiting for the next episode after that was hard. i feel like i learned a lot from that moment but i don't know how to express it exactly. it really stuck with me. there aren't many moments in games i can say that about. it still hits me the same way whenever i think about it today. but yeah anyway if max was real i'd totally date her even though she's a chronic ghoster.

I think what defined LiS is Chloe Price honestly. I never liked Max as a person. She can be secretly bitchy and two-faced and I hate it but to each his own. I always saw Chloe as a caricature and definitely a toxic friend but wasnt that the point? I know they wrote Chloe very intentional and intentionally cringy edgy like a performative 16 year old. I am replaying the game (remastered) and even though I have been subscribed this video appeared in the algorithm. The writing is indeed janky in some parts but there's a real nostalgia in this game. Mostly because I was from an arts college too. The hipsters in Max, Victoria and Jefferson was too real

LIS is a good game but its fatal flaw is that the game relies on you liking chloe and feeling the need to save or protect her. When thats not the case, it loses so much impact. If you dont like chloe, then the final choice is basically worthless and not a choice in the first place. If my response to the big final choice of the game, the one thats gonna have the most impact and is the most emotionally taxing is "fuck i can finally let chloe die" then it loses impact. Its okay to have a hateable character, but when you try to force the player into liking that character and revolving the game around her, its a problem

tbh the plot hole that annoys me to this day is the ending. like, max rewinds time to before chloe's death if she saves arcadia bay. there's nothing stopping her from saving chloe without any time travel at all, and that's why the choice feels contrived and very bury your gays of them.

As someone who is disabled, episode 4 for me was extremely hard to get through - but not because it was poorly done, but I thought it was done really well. In both realities it seems Chloe will end up disabled - either physically or emotionally. I didn't think it was the "worse" reality, it was more to reinforce that disabled people (especially in the American health system) are set up to fail in the current society we live in. Mental health is not given enough attention until it is too late (especially in women) and people with chronic physical illnesses are then slaves to the health care system. There is a guilt that comes with being disabled, for causing financial burden to your parents and hurting your loved ones emotionally. Not only do you feel like shit physically, but you also emotionally feel like garbage for causing your loved ones to hurt. They did an amazing job at showing the reality of this, and it blew me away when I first played it. I could talk forever about this but I've grown to seen this game as a political/social commentary. This may be a stretch, but the final decision being to sacrifice chloe or sacrifice arcadia bay to me was to either submit and conform to society as it stands or, to oppose them and give someone who was set up to fail a second chance in life. I do think there are many different ways of viewing and understanding the game though :) I enjoy hearing them all.

Interesting. I only played it once a few years ago, but from what I got, her wanting to end her life had more to do with the physical pain of her injury than the psychological aspect of it. It seemed like she was living in constant pain and was going to for the remainder of her life not unlike a French bulldog.
