LOACL presents "Life Of A Care Leaver" the documentary.
Not many of us are aware of the challenges and disadvantages that young people face when they leave the care service - the facilities provided by local councils that take in children and youth that cannot be brought up by their own families.
Children are taken into care for many reasons - their parents may be dead, or in prison, or unable to look after them through mental or physical health issues. Many of these children and youth in care have deep-rooted feelings of being unwanted, and hence unworthy.
This in itself has the knock-on effect of educational achievement and inclination towards criminal activities that are respectively well below and well above the national average for their peers.
Often seemed as the “invisible people” we want to give care leavers the voice to share the good and the bad, the ups and downs, the smiles and frowns, of their experiences in care.
Our aim is to support the experiences of care leavers in finding social and positive identity and not to feel stigmatised in today’s society.
For us, it’s to empower care leavers to become care leaders!!
