35:21 Small Correction: The French fleet landed 20 miles WEST of Alexandria at Burj al Arab. After the troops disembarked, they immediately marched on East to Alexandria. The fleet then sailed 50 miles to the East, where it dropped anchor at Abu Qeir bay where Nelson found it a few later, and destroyed it. Everything else is fantastic. Especially the terrific drawings. I am hooked on to this series.

Spotify link for these interested - open.spotify.com/episode/3HhB5JI0ycwRUINMSIt58I Here's episode 9, and our first of what's looking like 3 total episodes on Napoleon's Egyptian/Levantine Campaign. Not as much graphical stuff this time, which sped things up. Small correction for 24:05 - Bruey had 13 ships of the line, not 14 as me in the video would have you believe. All the sources say 13, so I've probably just written it down wrong. Au fait, if anyone speaks French, let me know if the genders for the ships are correct. I was surprised to see that they all seem to be male, except for La Corcyre. Lemme know if that's correct, thanks. As ever, any comments, criticisms, questions, whatever, feel free to share

Yes genders are all correct. For "le Aquilon" and "le Heureux" it would be instead l'Aquilon and l'Heureux but it's not a mistake it sounds simply more native this way, the rule is that you use " l' " instead of "le" or "la" when the next letter is a vowel or a muted "h", and it's "Le Peuple Souverain" instead of "Soverain".

Thanks! You're completely right I feel so stupid now that you've pointed it out. And sorry about the spelling as well. I'm actually taking proper French lessons now so I know my pronunciation has improved, but clearly still have a lot to learn

Don’t feel bad!… I was in French immersion for my first 6 years of school. We did every subject in French! I couldn’t hold a conversation with an imbecile now, don’t really remember anything except “Frere Jacques, dor mai vous…

"Plenty of talent to make good use of the brave, plenty of the brave to see actions thru to the end." Now, thats a quote to remember. I've been absent from the episodes my friends. Long hours. I look forward for new videos from this series with the same enthusiasm, tho. Its truly beyond my why a man of Napoleon's talents would waste time with someone as aloof and unfaithful as Josephine. Please tell me you are planning on releasing the new episode on the anniversary of the coronation:D:D

Thanks for the support mate, really appreciate it! As for Josephine, well the heart wants what it wants... 100% the next few episodes will be out before December 21st, next one I'll finish within the next 24-36 hours and upload. Probably get at least 2 more done before the anniversary

Is it true that Napoleon launched his Egyptian campaign to imitate the campaigns of alexander the great and caesar? Or is it a myth?
@mrsupremegascon
Жыл бұрын
Mostly no. It was the Directoire Government who wanted this expedition, as a way to cut an important trade route between UK and the British Raj. Napoleon was named to this expedition. Officially because he proved more than capable with small under supplied forces in Italy. But many thought that it was a way to keep him far from Paris, as Napoleon popularity started to become uncomfortable for the Directoire. Napoleon accepted without a fuss, maybe because he thought about what you said, it was a way to reproduce follow the step of Caesar and Alexander.

martinbraud is 100% correct. It's more of a happy coincidence that he ended up going to the same place they had, and that it also got him out of Paris. At the time, Napoleon, Joubert and Desaix were all broadly similar in that they were popular and successful generals, but Napoleon was chosen cause he was a) keen as a bean, and b) demonstrably good at difficult campaigns. Certainly though, as martinbraud points out, Napoleon absolutely was aware that he was following tracing Alexander's and Caesar's path, and reveled in the symbolism

@@historicallyadequate2500 That also sounds unlikely; Louis was a provincial medical doctor. Don't get me wrong; this is really a point of fine detail, overall, and I find your videos richly detailed, nuanced and informative.

It's fine this is a good question. I remember thinking it to myself when this was mentioned in the Roberts' biography of Napoleon and settled on the idea that it had to be Berlioz snr. Could very well be wrong though
