The bowfin, also known as the mudfish, dogfish, choupique, and grinnel, is an uncommon predator of fresh water lakes, ponds, and rivers with abundant vegetation. Bowfin eat fish, frogs, and crayfish, and will viciously strike a wide variety of fishing lures. This video showcases the fascinating life and life cycle of the bowfin including spawning activity and parental care of the young fry. It also includes how to catch a bowfin with common fishing baits.
My setup when targeting bowfin is a medium-action spinning rod with 20lb braided line and a short monofilament leader. I mostly use topwater frogs, spinnerbaits, weedless swimbaits, or a bobber with a chunk of fresh fish on a 3/0 circle hook.
