Love the update. I had a massive fuel cell on an off road vehicle and delt with sloshing of fuel. They make internal baffling (special foam) that will not interfere with your fuel sender or breakdown into the fuel filter. They use it in powerboat racing and racing applications with high G & vibration. Also as with any enclosed system please ensure the blower is always running. Carbon Dioxide off gassing of the engine and the dangers of a vented tank near non-explosion rated electronics in close proximity are a recipe for disaster. Vent the tank via a line to the outside. An empty tank is more dangerous than a full tank. Keep up the great work. Love the process.

Thanks for this. Yes I do have baffles ready for the tank - balls rather than foam as the latter can deteriorate over time in diesel. Re: the explosion risk - remember that diesel and petrol fumes behave very differently, so for diesel fumes to be a spontaneous fire risk would need pressure or heat - more than a spark alone. But yes indeed, I'm looking to ensure both ventilation and the breather hose are installed a-ok.

When you rig Allen with whatever spare parts you think you'll need on a voyage, don't forget to include an extra priming bulb. We got stranded 3 miles off of Marathon Key in rough water because the bulb had cracked & the engine wasn't able to suck fuel through the hose. It was a 28ft rental boat and the owner didn't have any tape or tools or anything on board I could use to fix it so we had to be towed in. Luckily the marine radio worked or we'd have been adrift for a long time. The moral of the story being that it will usually be the cheap & insignificant or obscure parts that fail and end up ruining your day.

Hey there. Plastic fuel tanks are fine. This size of 100L is small and doesn't need baffles. But plastic tanks do expand ~2% when first filled with hydrocarbons. Make allowance for that. Straps are perfectly good to secure them. I've designed fireboats with AFFF plastic foam tanks of 2000L. We just secure them with straps, but sometimes they are metal straps with turnbuckles (bottle screws) to tension the straps. Finally the pressure/vaccum vent is umm...odd. Typical marine practise is just run a hose from the top of the tank to an external breather fitting that pokes out the side of topsides, high up. A breather valve might not open up with the very small suction pressure from a diesel lift pump or might burp diesel if the tank gets warm. Orienting the tank long'lly is indeed the best because it increases stability. Ever carried a dishbasin full of water? Google the free surface effect

I would recommend you reconsider that tank. You should be using a marine diesel fuel cell with built in baffles. I’m worried about sloshing. 100 liters sloshing is BAD. And i’d recommend a secondary tank next to it. If possible. You can’t have too much fuel.

I also understand you will have multiple tanks/bladders. I remember you saying so earlier in this vid as well as others. I was merely opining that the more fuel the better. You can’t have to much in your planned conditions. Here in the U.S.,(especially as referenced in the military)the tank which the engine feeds from is considered a ‘day’ tank. I realise this was a long while ago now but….. You made the right decision moving from bladder tanks to the plastic jobbies is a good move and the right move. From a stability point of view they are absolutely the right shame to minimise the reduction of GM due to free surface effect, having a narrow breadth. (Formulae for free surface effect = (length x breadth cubed)/12 ). BTW - I have seen the later video where you put those spherical plastic doohickies in the tank to reduce ‘slosh’ - sorry but they will be about as much use as tits on a fish.😉

The baffle balls I've heard to have a good reputation. Why do you say otherwise? The tank needs to be pretty full of them to work.
@normanboyes4983

@@AlexHibbertOriginals the only way to reduce the free surface effect is to have an effective baffle running longitudinally so from the formulae you are only cubing half the breadth (x2 for each side of the now divided tank) so ameliorating the effect of the cubing. If you crammed the undivided tank with the plastic doohickeys it will offer some damping to ‘slosh’ but cannot materially affect the fundamental free surface effect - just physics.

I was thinking that if you ja e installed the fuel tanks length ways towards the front they will get more sloshing, while if they are installed sideways the momentum of the fuel is lower as acting like two baffles. I looked at your fuel tank method of securing it and couldn't figure what about it I did not like. Then I realised that you are securing a admittedly heavy duty plastic container full of fuel which will weigh in in excess of 60 kilos but be held down over a few square centimetre's of area. Whilst at sea this will be exerting forces on this area in several axis 24/7. Not a good or even survivable idea.
@AlexHibbertOriginals
3 жыл бұрын
I think the part you're not taking into account is that the full weight won't be exerted through the central press (which I reassure will be supplemented). For the full weight to act against the press or the very heavy duty HDPE, the boat would have to exert extraordinary forces, like being in free fall, or hitting a solid object at high speed. The majority of the weight will be taken by the padded platform it's sat on. Cheers.
@glennedwards1449

@@AlexHibbertOriginals Sorry I should of said the Mass of 60 plus KG though you do have a rail securing it. I am suggesting that it will wear away over the course of what could be weeks but probably months causing stress fractures and then cracks. Even if Alan was moored on the hook. In fact you will get more wear than you should on the hard especially if you have diesel in the tank due to thermal expansion and contraction. This solution would work if instead of applying pressure to the tank directly you had a cover plate that overlapped the tank sides holding it securely and more importantly spreading the pressure. Of course even this would not be ideal as you are still stuck with it being a single point of failure but at least less likely for caterstropic failure.
