Congratulations Nick. I think you'll enjoy kayak fishing. I know I sure did. A few tips I can give are: 1. Always dress expecting to get wet. You're so close to the water in a kayak they you will get wet. Water will drip on you from the paddle, splash on you when fish thrash about while landing them & there is always the chance you will flip it over. Always be prepared for the worst scenario. 2. Always bring a dry bag/box and always keep your wallet, keys, phone, etc dry and secured in your storage hatches. 3. Always secure your gear. Get lanyards for everything and floatation noodles on your rods in case one falls over the side. Flipping is always a possibility no matter how awesome you think you are. Always wear your flotation device when on the water in a kayak. They aren't made to keep someone who can't swim afloat. That is a myth. They're made to save you from drowning should you fall overboard and hit your head and be knocked unconcious. You can't swim if you're unconcious, whether you know how or not. Good luck! The new fishing spots available to you now should help you have more fun and the exercise from paddling is always a bonus.

Great suggestions, Bill. PFD always and that is one thing I do need to do is get some foam & leashes to secure everything down. I clip in my backpack to the milk crate but if that goes over - it wouldnt matter that I had it clipped in the first place, it's still be long gone. Thanks!

I just got the same kayak and already have ideas to customize it. 1. I used a large plastic food container in the front hatch, where I keep a dry bag for car keys, wallet etc. 2. For the raised back hatch issue. I've cut some wood blocks that I plan on gluing to the bottom of the create

I’m 6,4 300 lbs and haven’t noticed any problems other than you mentioned but I added scupper plugs so I don’t get wet but what I did for a phone and tool storage is buy a water proof box and put it under the straps of the middle storage container and when it flips it will hold it

I ALWAYS use a one gallon zip-lock bag for cell-phone,bill-fold etc.I put a clip on bag then attach a nylon string to clip and let string hang out of lid.That dry compartment is not dry.None of them are unless they have a mesh bag under lid.

Solid idea. I always notice a small bit of water gets in there after trips, I don’t really keep anything in the “dry” compartment anyways but I use ziplocks for everything, tethered as well just in the crate

I’ve also got a Lifetime Tamarack Angler! Mine came with a paddle, from Walmart. I think I paid $240 plus tax. I’m a woman but also heavy, nearly 200lbs. I’ve taken actually quite a lot of stuff out in it and even though like you said, it was a bit of a wet ride, it still felt pretty stable & safe. I plugged the scuppers behind the seat with real scupper plugs. I did try the stadium seat-it was comfortable, but not really worth the extra weight. I’d rather move around than get more water in the boat. Obviously I’d NEVER take this into any body of water with current, or offshore. I use it for freshwater ponds & lakes. Loved your idea for that tool storage solution! Next up for me: an anchor trolley, and installing a fishfinder. I’ll be uploading a video of my EASY fishfinder install of a Garmin Striker 4 within a few days!

I just got the same kayak and was concerned about the back hatch lid myself for not letting the crate sit flat. I’m going to try pool noodles cut in half then zip tie to the bottom of the crate. I think that will allow it to sit flat.
@NORCALRODREEL
5 жыл бұрын
Great idea. Additionally, in the unlikely event the kayak tips, the crate should float. I’ve seen others use the pool noodle for that purpose

I’ve since changed my original idea of the pool noodles which didn’t work to good so I cut the bottom out of my milk crate out to go around the hatch cover. I use the Plano bag that’s designed for milk crates so even though the hatch cover is still at the bottom of the crate with the Plano bag it’s not even noticeable. The system works great !!

@@NORCALRODREEL Nice. what he mentioned was a good idea too but if you wanna take the crate off you'll have a gigantic hole where your stuff can fall out. Probably works for him since he probably won't take it out. Thanks for confirming that the noodles could work. I've been watching kayak lately and I've been thinking of picking up the sport since I live near the ocean. You think this kayaking would do okay in the ocean? Not open blue with pelagics but more like inshore (bays, saltwater flats, mangrove).
@NORCALRODREEL
5 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. This would probably do fine inshore. Check out Zoffinger, another KZitem channel. He does a lot of inshore fishing on Pelican kayaks that are similar in size and feature to this and would probably be a good place to reference and ask him on one of his videos. I wouldn’t take this out in the ocean but in a bay in decent, calm conditions, I think it’d be fine 👍🏼

First time kayak owner. Have purchased a 2019 Tamarac and have spent the last 2 weeks purchasing needed accessories. I'm almost ready to hit the water! Have a couple of related questions, and would appreciate an assist. 1) Having loaded the kayak onto a J-bar roof-rack and cinching-down as tightly as possible, I noticed the side wall over the cradle buckled-in slightly. I also noticed since taking the kayak off the rack that the hull seems to have relaxed and the buckled-in area is not quite as noticeable, but still there, Is this to be expected? Did I apply too much pressure when strapping down the kayak? 2) Have created a milk crate storage box, and would appreciate your assist on best way to secure behind the seat. I'm thinking by adding pad eyes (using well nuts & machine screws) I can then use bungee-cords to secure the crate 3) Purchased a stadium seat, plan to remove factory supplied seat back, then add pad-eyes (as above) to secure the seat using bungee cords.
@NORCALRODREEL
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed 1) you need to be very careful how tight you cinch down the kayak, because this is thinner plastic it can bend. I have not had that happen with mine yet but you need to find a happy medium where you can rock the car when pushing on the kayak when it’s secure on the car and how tight the straps are if that makes sense. 2) the single pad eye in the back behind the seat was the anchor for two bungees I run thru the openings in the crate. I try to keep these as close to the sides as I can to open up the room at the bottom in the crate or else everything sits on the bungees. Thru the back I literally just hook the cords to the back bungee line of the tank well and it’s good. Could it be more secure, yes but I haven’t noticed any issue out on the water at all. 3) I kept the back of my seat still and it hasn’t made a big difference I think you’d be ok so I’d say go with what you feel - if you want to remove it it’ll be fine. I feel that by keeping it and cinching down the buckle straps to a tight position provides some extra support in case I lean back in the seat, and I reduce the risk of digging the back corners of the stadium seat into the plastic of the boat

Nor Cal Rod & Reel Nick... Appreciate the feedback. Yesterday was my very first time in the water. I took extra care to be sure everything was secure.....it’s a good thing. It took a while to get comfortable casting from a sitting position, but having a lanyard attached to everything but myself proved helpful. My first and only catch of the day was an 18” brown trout. All hell broke out with him on the line!! Once netted and on board the calamity continued. Wish I had it all on film :) Bottom-line....I’m hooked !!! Could you also comment on whether it’s a good idea to drill holes in order to add-on is pad eyes and or cleats ? Have the stainless screws & welll nuts ready to use. Thanks, Ed
@NORCALRODREEL

Plenty of people add the eyelets and drill into their boats. Unless you really need it to secure something else on your boat, in my opinion, I dont think it is necessary if you just have a crate you are hauling. If you do decide to add them though, make sure you check out some other videos where guys show their eyelet or other mod installs where they need to drill and screw an accessory to their boat. Make sure to pick up some marine silicone/sealant to add to the base and threads of the screw - lots of other videos on KZitem how to properly seal your upgrades. Last thing you want is to take on water out there by overlooking that component. I cant add much more since this is an area I'm not truly experienced in. Hope that helps!

I wouldnt recommend it but im sure there is a way if you found a bucket, let's say, that had a slightly larger diameter that you could fill with water and use. If you were looking to utilize a livewell, I would look at retrofitting one in the tank well or look for a larger kayak
