Elder Holland never disappoints! I've often theorized that, if Elder Holland managed to give a bad talk some day, the universe just might implode from such a terrible violation of natural laws. XD Seriously, though, this was such an awesome talk. I've personally always wondered how the cross became the symbol of Christianity in the first place. Millions suffered and died on crosses , but only one ever rose triumphant because death had no claim on Him. It always seemed to me that the most logical symbol of Christianity would have been an open and empty tomb, showing that His inner purity overcame that ancient and greatly-feared enemy of mankind: death itself.

I love this! Elder Holland is always so willing to go to the deep places. And he inspires me every time. Truly his addresses over the years have become iconic. I love him! Now - a comment about this particular topic. As a life-long devoted Latter-day Saint, I HAVE adopted the cross as a symbol of my faith. I believe the cross to be a very reverent symbol of the culmination of the divine mission of our Savior. To me, it is not a symbol of torture, but a reminder of His infinite love for us. That he would allow Himself to die for me in such a cruel way and TRIUMPH over this man made symbol of execution is incredibly emotional for me. The cross for me represents His love and His power. I love it so much. And I wear a small cross pendant to remind myself and others that he is RISEN and is no longer upon the cross. It is empty. Also, in a time where all Christians are being attacked for their beliefs, I think it is our imperative to connect with Christians of all denominations. I firmly believe that the authority of Christ is found in our church. But, if there is a way to make a connection to other believers, this is one way to do it. Just by seeing the small cross upon my neck, other believers will know that I witness of Christ in this quiet way.

The Atonement of Jesus Christ: LDS: Forgave our sins, brought us to a zero point, but working out our salvation and enduring to the end is necessary to recieve the fullness of salvation in the afterlife. Historic Christianity: The Atonement of Jesus Christ not only has forgiven our sins, but to those who believe God has credited our account with an abundance of grace that entitles us to be fully admitted into God's family and to recieve the fullness of salvation in the afterlife. There is no prerequisite other than belief. This is one of the crucial difference that separates Historic Christianity from LDS theology.

Hi Al, I'm glad that you believe that Christ has the power to save, however that's only a first step, towards being able to love God with our heart, mind, strength, and our whole soul, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Even the devils tremble and believe that Jesus is the Christ. (James 2:19) It's definitely true that we are saved only through the grace of Christ, however we have to show him love by exercising our faith so that we can access his grace. I.E. repentance and lovingly choosing to keep God's commandments. " If you love me, keep my commandments." " If you love me, feed my sheep." -Jesus Christ. After all, will Christ save anyone to live with him and his kingdom, if we don't show him and mankind love? This is the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which I know is true! If you want to know more about what we believe, I invite you to checkout comeuntochrist.org, churchofjesuschrist.org, and download the free Gospel Library app authored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Historic Christians have lost simple truths if that’s the case. The Bible is filled with commandment to do much more than just believe. James chapter 2 clarifies that Faith without works is dead. Faith alone is not enough, and works alone are not enough. Jesus Christ is the only source of Salvation, but He asks us to do much more than cry out “Lord, Lord”. We must do the Father’s will. Matthew 7:20-24: “"20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock" Faith without works is indeed dead. You cannot claim Jesus Christ’s name and be called a Christian while working iniquity and sin. You must walk the way of love and peace and follow Him and do your best to “sin no more”. Taking the Lord’s name and then working iniquity is breaking commandment to not take His name in vain. We must represent Him. We must love God above all other distractions and wickedness in life. We must love our neighbors. We must follow Him. “Lord, Lord” is not enough to free us from His other commandments. The Bible is full of works we must do. The works however, do not save us, but they are indeed required of us.

The scriptures quoted and the pictures shown of Christ hanging on the cross or on the walls of your home, is no different than the reason I wear a cross hanging around my neck. It is to remind me and other's that I am a true believer and follower of him... I was shown a vision of Christ once carrying his cross. It was one of the most sacred experiences I have ever seen or had in my life. He was struggling to carry the Vertical (only) part of the cross and was extremely weighed down, tired, exhausted and was struggling just to walk with it opon his back. Tears came to my eyes as I witnessed this... He fell down on his right knee, a small frame of a person suddenly rushed from the sidelines as if to help him to get back up. I heard the crack of a whip and the voice of a Roman soilder Yelling "get away from him, if you know what's good for you, unless you want the same thing to happen to you".. Then I witnessed the Savior of the World, repeatedly being wiped for the sins of the World and yelled at to "get up"... Our Lord God and Savor did struggle but stood back up on his feet. Then instead of being concerned about his own pain, I seen him turning looking back over his right shoulder, as if looking to see person who had attempted to help him... It was so sacred that I weep and closed my eyes and began praying. When I opened them again the vision was gone from before my eyes... Our Savor lives...

@@hayleyneider3013 this talk (the first part) explains why the LDS church does not use the Cross as the symbol of Faith. Elder Holland said that the LDS church, and He, deeply respect those who do use the cross. It's because many people are questioning the LDS' dedication towards Jesus Christ when they question about the cross. Elder Holland explained that that was not the case. In the Articles of Faith of the Church, the LDS church also believe of the freedom of worship. You can worship the almighty God however you may. The second part, Elder Holland extended an invitation. To take our own crosses or burdens. And follow the Savior despite the sufferings and troubles.

@@gamecorner103 Brother Holland should be praising and giving thanks for those Christian brother's and sister's who wear a cross as a representation of them being followers our Lord God and Savor Jesus Christ... His talk would be no different than a minister from another religion standing up and giving examples as to why his congregation as followers of Christ don't wear sacrament clothing with signs and symbols engraved opon them. The cross, like the sacred Temple garments, depending on what your viewpoint is independently. Are no different. Both are just physical symbols expressing one comment or covenants they have (personally) made with the Lord... We as followers of Christ should not judge one's tokens and oaths and or covenants that one has made with the Lord or by the wearing of a cross.. If ever in a time of desperate need, I would be looking for that Mormon Temple smile around one's neck or a cross of a Christian brother... Look, all men make mistakes. Peter denied the Savior. So should we then deny the Savior? Clearly not! Was Peter still called by Christ? Surely he was. Lay conflicts to rest and trust the Holy Ghost which will testify that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the church Christ organized. Just as he called Peter, even though Peter made a mistake and denied him at one point. If you follow the counsel of the world that says a church is not true if a prophet makes a mistake, then all churches who believe in Peter are not true, because Peter denied the Savior! Can you see the danger in saying Christ did not create the LDS church if one of his servants, the prophets, makes a mistake now? Christ was the only one perfect. How can he create a church if it must only be perfect people? Ridiculous! He creates the church AND THEN perfects the saints within it. Enough said!

The Atonement starts with Jesus entering the Garden of Gethsemane and ends with his Resurrection.

Hi, In the Bible it says that Christ suffered so much in Gethsemane, that he sweat great drops of blood. Not only this, but the agony was so intense, that he begged the Father, that if it was possible, to have this cup of agony removed from him, but nevertheless it was the Father's will not his be done. This suffering continued on the cross, still when he cried " My God my God, why has thou forsaken me?" The atonement, of Jesus Christ ended after he fulfilled the "sign of Jonas," or Jonah, which means that Christ was inside of the "heart of the earth," like Jonah was inside of the belly of the whale. Christ's Resurrection was an essential part of his atonement, because the bands of death needed to be broken. Not only this, but his resurrection was a literal thing, like ours can be someday too.

Symbolic symbolism is a old , old teaching. They are a Parable teaching to , a understanding. The Be hive , is a Parable teaching. The church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints . Saints be a Parable depiction teaching so is Jesus Christ a symbolic symbolism depiction. Now , we have lots of different depictions of how Jesus Christ looks , to a message of , what is a back drops . If we understand symbolic symbolism we understand a language that is Parable teaching. If we , are not careful with symbolic symbolism , we can worship the building more than what's happening inside the building. For example a vehicle does not feel nothing , but a human does. Symbolic symbolism has domain power to the title of its creation. It says nothing but speaks as a Parable teaching as the cross speaks to a definition of its kind to , a understanding , same as a Staff a Rod , Reed and many many things as feed my sheep is. Symbolic symbolism is a old new , new old , to all that brand a make to title the mark of , making you more the same by being One and can confuse the best with the most that does not give thanks to Jesus Christ for the blessing of it is a reflection teaching to what makes you better with a reflection of giving thanks to Heavenly father Jesus Christ the holy Ghost. We look at a Flag and a flag is symbolic symbolism that is a Parable teaching to a message of its making a vocabulary. We must be awear of , the symbolic symbolism that gets hijacked to mark it evil by making what is good evil by man to mark a understanding to its depiction of the symbolic symbolism. In history we understand how , symbolic symbolism that says nothing does by its make to mark it a good thing are reigns down fear death and destruction on people to control. A symbolic symbolism is more powerful than words for it leads to a action without order to do the will of by taking on the name of its creation to justify a wrong right. The Cross has been used in history and can by many see this as fear and destruction. As we see today with other depiction that be symbolic. The star of David can be hijacked if not used for good. Same with the swastika and we understand this but the future my once again see it as good to forget how it be hijacked by evil ways that man make it. A symbolic symbolism can be used for evil to control and puts fear into people as it becomes worshiped. Soon as you worship something , like a symbolic symbolism are a golden cow , it has domain over you by the control to its creation and it digs a pit for those that use it for evel ways against gospel principles. This type of control is by power to order Priest craft. We , can understand the , elephant and donkey is a symbolic symbolism to , a political party and it has a power to control how the difference is to a understanding that be a endless pit used in the wrong way and by its own make something by the creation to be a mark , something different than what it be attended for and puts a expectation on them more than the animal is to make a symbolic symbolism power to rule and reign jude by evil ways are as Jesus Christ would . We see in history as today how conflict and contention become a holy war to hijack the minds of others to be doing God's will to control the drive the hypnotic depiction of the symbolic meaning of how it is seen to fullfiing the will of God by its order to belong to , its creation. Lots and lots of symbolic symbolism is used for good and evil its important to understand how attachment come with its control to be control by good ways and evil ways. Some words become a Parable teaching to be offensive from its meaning to be hijacked by the evil wrong ways they be subject to. As we understand , without naming one to example. Soon as a person worships something it had a domain power to control them a knowledge and tool used by good and evil ways. A Denomination would understand this by its own to be as Jesus Christ is. Its a Parable teaching great shall be the fall the house that be deceived. The restoration of the gospel the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints , would have a testimony to another testament of Jesus Christ in teaching this by the work done to fullfiing the faith to knowledge. The church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints does teach by symbolic symbolism to the cross as we understand the nails that Jesus Christ says come feel my hands , to knowledge another testament of Jesus Christ by faith as it be by doing the work to show the work , by doing it to a phase of life as we understand by faith the knowledge made by scripture , Jesus is the Christ by the covenants the lord makes with the father , they know they are not cast off forever. Convincing the jew and Gentile . At no time has Jesus Christ teach thoes that call and faith on his name should be kept away fromhim and be cast out . All members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints , take be given a new name and that is Jesus Christ as the scriptures teach and all Elders take up their own cross as the scriptures teach in the book of Mormon a nother testament to a new and everlasting covenant that is by blood sacrifice to the Bible teachings as it be by the book of Mormon to the fullness of the gospel to the restoration of the Priesthood to gospel the last dispensation . We testify of the season we be in to phase the testament as Jesus Christ does and lots of teaching and testimonies back drop the cross so adults can understand something children fear and they do not think like adults , the love Jesus Christ and feel his pain , the cross is wood and feels nothing.

Hi Sophie. You are loved and tremendously needed, and we must show greater love and charity towards all, regardless of differences. Sister McConkie, former counselor of the Young Women's general presidency, has taught: "I know people who come to church every Sunday so that they can be inspired and uplifted and who just simply walk away feeling judged and unloved, unneeded. ...We need to do this differently. ... It's so important that we be aware that everyone around us is loved of God and that we need to see them Christlike eyes, and we cannot allow judgment to dictate the way we interact with people." I don't know what it is like to be you, and to have the feelings, knowledge, and experiences that you have had. It's not possible for me to understand everything about you and your life, nor vice versa. I do have knowledge of Christ's ability to do so, however. He knows and understands you in ways that I never could and better than even you understand yourself. He understands me the same way. I also know that Christ expects sacrifices from us in order to keep His commandments and reconcile ourselves with Him. This means putting off the natural man, which is incredibly difficult to do and is a lifelong endeavor for all of us. While the hurt you feel may be very real, I would encourage you to take this pain to God and Christ, and to be willing to ask difficult questions of Them. I've had to give up many practices that I believed were vital to who i was in order to follow Christ, and while it was difficult, the new person that I am now is thankful for what I gave up, because I gained far more. The ancient prophet Jacob put it this way: "Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand. For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works. Wherefore, beloved brethren, be reconciled unto him through the atonement of Christ, his only Begotten Son, and ye may obtain a resurrection, according to the power of the resurrection which is in Christ, and be presented as the first-fruits of Christ unto God, having faith, and obtained a good hope of glory in him before he manifesteth himself in the flesh." I wish you courage and happiness in doing what is right.

For a long time I was living in sin attempting to hide it. That is what led me to deep depression while pretending to be a member. It was after God touched my heart and I repented and found a true testimony that my life improved so much and my hope is found in Christ even when life is difficult. I've found that anger and confusion leads to unhappiness and even mental illness. If the church truly causes you mental illness, then leave it behind you. But I testify that the gospel has greatly improved my life and mental health, even with my attractions to other men.

Sounds like one of those prosperity preachers would be more of your liking! They won't preach repentance or salvation! They just want your money! They'll preach any sermon u want if u pay them enough! U don't tempt God or tell him what message to preach and u don't do it to one of his apostles! That scripture I believe in the 1st section of d&c maybe the last verse? "Whether by my voice or by my servant it is the same!I'm not seriously suggesting u leave the church becuz it is the Lord's true church and the only way to salvation! But it sounds like u aren't interested in God's will ! u obviously aren't interested in God's church anymore! He and his apostles and prophets don't negotiate if something is wrong it will always be a sin! The best of luck to u!And btw we address him as Elder Holland! Please, Have a little respect if u want any in return!

What about what he's said is making you feel depressed and suicidal? He listed it as those things that are tremendously difficult for those choosing Christ to experience. It was listed as a difficult trial.
