I have tried I don't know how many times to make biscuits and they always end up in the trash. They were always falling apart and just not any good....I love to cook and I had some self-rising flour and buttermilk and thought I would give these a try....THEY WERE DELICIOUS....I told my husband that I was going to try biscuits one more time and he said "Uh Oh"...well he tried them...he ate 1........and then went back for 2 more....Please try them if you have never been able to make biscuits....you won't be disappointed. Thank you Hands That Cook....

As a son of the south, I grew up eating homemade biscuits prepared by relatives in the rural part of southeastern Virginia, in the area I referred to as "the country" whenever we visited from our suburban home. As a child, I remember fondly how delicious those biscuits were, often served with fresh butter beans, corn and country ham that were grown locally and prepared by my grandmother. I recently decided I wanted to attempt making some biscuits from scratch myself. So it was that I went looking for recipes on KZitem. After findng your video, I decided to try out your recipe and technique. I must say I was truly shocked that my very first attempt turned out great! Since that first attempt, I have experimented with several other recipes, but your recipe really is the best recipe I have found. I have made them at least 3 times now, and they truly were no-fail biscuits every time! Thanks for sharing your technique!

This is the same as the recipe I learned as a child. My mother told me that if I didn't learn to make biscuits and bread I would never get a husband. She told my brothers if they didn't learn how to make bread their hair would fall out. People wonder how my Mom managed to get 6 sons and a daughter to learn to cook. She lied to us. End result, we can cook anything we want!

BTW, did you have a soft winter wheat flour or use a regular self rising flour? Annie, I'm proud of you for having the courage to at least try this. So many people won't. Freeze the unbaked biscuits if you don't want to bake them all at once. Simply freeze on a baking sheet and then into a zip lock bag with instructions. When you take them out of the freezer, let them sit on the baking sheet until the oven heats up to 475, then proceed as the instructions say.

Miss Linda, lady, I have tried so many recipes for biscuits for the past 20 years! I have made mile high raw in the middle biscuits, whiter than white biscuits, hockey pucks full of crumbs. I had given up, until I watched your video. I followed it to the tee, except parchment paper, I greased my cookie sheet with olive oil. Other than that I did exactly what you told me to do! My biscuit where kissing on the pan, had risen like they were reaching for the top shelf and had more layer's than a Farrah Fawcett hairdo. I also made buttermilk gravy, I added milk, water and buttermilk and ma'am! It was delicious. My sister and I were taken back to Mother's kitchen table. So thank you for the recipe and the memory. Keep doing what you do! God Bless and tell Mr. Sam howdy for me. xoxo Wayne

Ranita Todd Hi Ranita, I'm so glad I can be of some help. When you want to use a frozen biscuit, just put them on the baking sheet frozen and leave them out while your oven heats up. They are just as delicious baked from frozen as when I made them fresh. The sound you hear is my burglar alarm. Sam is in and out constantly. I'm so sorry it upsets your dog. I'm an animal lover too so I sympathize with you. I'll try to get him to stop going in and out of the house when I make a video.....but I can't make any promises that he'll quit. I live in Indiana and I buy White Lilly self rising flour here at Kroger. However, I have compared White Lilly to other available flours. White Lilly has 2% protein level, and as you say it is made from soft winter wheat. King Arthur self rising flour is also 2 % protein and made from soft winter wheat. King Arthur says they reformulated their self rising flour a couple of years ago. I have not used the KA self rising because White Lilly is cheaper, but it seems like KA self rising flour would make good light biscuits also. A few days later I was shopping at Mejers ( competitor of Walmart ) and I checked some other brands of self rising flour, and there were about four that had a 2% or 3% protein level. I am not a flour expert but just for discussion, if I could not find White Lilly, I would look for a self rising flour with a 2% or 3% protein level and use that. Just my opinion. Your biscuits look really good.

+Charlie Wilson Hi Charlie, I'm not a flour expert either and have always used white lily...I have bought KA but honestly cannot tell the difference. That can be said (IMHO) about cheaper flours also...I can't tell the difference in regular or sr flour other than the soft winter wheat variety. In my opinion, it's all marketing. It doesn't matter WHO mills the flour (my opinion) I've bought flour from Aldi and can't tell a difference so the only reason I use a soft winter wheat flour, no matter what brand, is to make biscuits and pie crust. I agree with you! Thanks for watching and commenting Charlie.

Thank you so much for this video.. I have always shied away from making biscuits because I thought they were too complicated.. WELL, I made these tonite with our dinner and my family loved them.. I can only find Gold Medal self rising flour here where i live in NY and I think they may come better when I try that flour.. Today I used regular flour with Baking Powder added and Baking Soda.. I was SO HAPPY AND PROUD that I finally made Homemade Biscuits!!! And so wAs my family..But I want to improve them.. pThank you so much!.. I love your channel.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I'm Alabama born & raised & have just lost my mama (very unexpectedly) 3 months ago. God love her, she tried to teach me to make a good biscuit but I was only ever hit or miss with my success & it just wasn't mama's way to weigh & measure when cooking but her biscuits were always just as wonderful as yours. I'm not an utter failure as a cook but just never have gotten the hang of the good old southern biscuit--probably because we are not by and large big breakfast eaters. So, while I did shed tears watching this, it was good to finally get a recipe for a biscuit that might finally make Mama proud.

Selena, I'm sorry for the loss of your mom. I know how very hard that is. My mother passed away in 2011 and I still miss her everyday. This recipe is no fail IF you follow all the instructions and will make a biscuit you and your mama will be proud of. Please get back with me to let me know how yours turn out. TFW and God Bless you, Linda P.S. Biscuits are good with almost every meal...so experiment!!

Also, if it hasn't been mentioned in the comments below already...you can substitute the buttermilk with 1c cow's milk with 2tbsp white vinegar. It will coagulate & thicken. Old school buttermilk is also actually not white at all...if you leave milk out for a few days in a humid environment, the curds will separate from the whey. The clear liquid at the bottom is the actual buttermilk. The buttermilk we purchase at the grocery store is cultured the same way as yogurt and pasteurized which is why it is white. Great recipe. Same as mine except I use shortening instead of butter in the dough & still brush the tops with it before, during, & after the baking process. ❤❤❤😋

@@mariadej.torresdelatorre1345 I’m in Canada, and I never see buttermilk here either. Here’s another substitute: For whatever amount I need, I pour half of that amount of whole milk in a measuring cup, then add an equal amount of sour cream and stir. Let it stand for at least 5 minutes and stir again.

If you don't have self rising flour, simply replace 1 and a half teaspoons of reg flour with baking powder per cup. Or just add the teaspoon and a half of baking powder to a cup of flour. For the half cup you would use 3/4 t. baking powder. By the time you add your buttermilk and extra flour to roll it out, it won't matter which way you did it. Technique is what's important. :o)
