Hey! I m Janne Parviainen and this is my second light painting tutorial made for lightpaintingblog.com
I often receive questions of how do I create my photos. Because of that, I will start a series of light painting video tutorials here and on our blog. Make sure you subscribe if you are interested!
Adding the lightman figure to your photos is a great way to add more storytelling power to them. Ever since I first invented to trace my body with a lightstick in 2009 to create this luminous creature I have been totally hooked to it.
The set up for the photo:
I have made the video at my studio in bright light to have good quality video. Remember always to shoot the light painting photos in low light, otherwise, you'll just end up with an over exposed image!
The basic trick to draw the lightman is very simple; just trace your or the model's body with a small light source, always pointing the light towards the camera. Make sure your lines are close to each other in order to trace the body accurately.
One thing to take in notion is that the brighter the light you use, the higher aperture figure you need to use. Also the slower you move the light, the brighter it looks in the photo. Starting from an aperture of 8 to 13 is a good place to start.
For drawing the lightman, I recommend you use bulb mode with a cable release since it most probably will take longer than 30 seconds.
