I like how the rest of Buzz’s crew are not only foils for him, but also show traits missing in his old partner Warp: Where Warp was trapped Mira could easily phase through and also thought out of the box often. Where Warp supposedly was killed and could not be revived, XR was literally made to be put back together, even gaining a snarky personality that would lighten the atmosphere. Meanwhile Booster lacks many things that Warp had or was about, but he had in spades what Warp did not: a heart as big as he was. He was a genuine friend.

Mira Nova was a great character because she had depth of character, super abilities, courage, brains and the will to prove herself as a valuable member of Star Command. In current year, writers think it is enough that by virtue of a female character being female, she automatically classifies as brave and stunning. Given the chance, if they made the cartoon today, they'd keep the name of the show but make it all about Mira showing up Buzz time and time again. The Fourth Age posted a great video about heroes in comics called 'Superman' the Non-Hero. It's an excellent assessment of the narrative that a hero is what a hero does, not what they are.

I wouldn't call it great... The guy is clearly sketchy in some of his views, referring to Supe's son as one of the "alphabet people." Then there's a weird comment where he refers to Peter Parker as "the only real Spider-Man," which appears to be a slight on Miles, but it's unclear. Admittedly, I couldn't be bothered to watch the whole video, but the frame of argument and especially the reception of his audience indicates a less than savory character.

Honestly, I really love Buzz's refusal to accept a partner stemming from Trauma and Survivors Guilt, rather than just "Rookies get in the way". We saw him admiring Mira's skills and determination, same for XR. But the trauma over Warp's "Death/Sacrifice" kept him pushing them away, for fear of costing someone else their life. Them being Rookies wasn't the problem, he was hurting, he was terrified of letting ANYONE close. And for Buzz, an EXTREME stickler to rules, to the point of having written half the rules for star command himself, being willing to defy those rules for the sake of not jeapradizing anybody else, says so much.

It just seems to be an epidemic with franchises anymore, ignoring their past projects or lure completely. I feel like a lot of that has to do with the people in charge anymore, feeling like whatever property they're working on was somehow horribly flawed to begin with. So their vision of whatever property is the correct one, which almost ends up being completely new IP, only recognizable by the marquis alone. Not that I'm looking at older stuff with nostalgia or rose tinted glasses, it just seems like a lot of them or just way more creative. It just seems like the old Buzz cartoon fitted so much better in the toy story universe, and actually seems like a real cartoon that a kid would watch. Because it was a well-written cartoon.

The best part of this movie for me was the characters because while they might be simple they are very entertaining to watch. They are much better than Lightyear's supporting cast. Mira was fun, charming, and quick on her feet and she has a good dynamic with Buzz. I didn't believe that the black lady in Lightyear was very good, she doesn't stick around long enough for us to know her well, which makes the Up styled montage of her glowing old during Buzz's attempts to harness crystalic fusion feel really weak. As a byproduct, her granddaughter doesn't get much time with Buzz so their relationship doesn't feel as strong as Mira's. XR was fun and he was able to prove to be an effective partner for Buzz. Socks however feels like they put him in as a marketing gimmick and he has way too many instances of spawning a new ability on the fly to get Buzz out of a sticky situation. XR lost in his first battle and I've never missed him more, not to mention they didn't try to make him like Clank from Ratchet and Clank. He gained more personality and had a lot more funny jokes. Booster was the comic relief but he was sweet and his determination to help in spite of his lack of experience was endearing. The black guy that pulls the surrender button is just less interesting Korg from Thor Ragnarock. Not to mention he is introduced way later in the story so we don't have as much time with him as we do with Booster. Finally, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command let Zurg be an actual character instead of just a suit for a twist reveal like in Lightyear. He has a lot of flavor and he really hams it up with how unapologetically vain and evil he is. Even the plot twist in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command of Warp Darkmatter being agent Z was better than the twist that (spoiler alert) Zurg is Buzz from the future. While it might be a simple twist that a lot of people saw comming, it doesn't damage the internal consistency with a dumb subversion of expectations that sounds like something out of a bad fanfiction.

Zurg's minions are either cowardly or self serving, it's not like Zurg hides the fact that he's unashamedly evil, so whatever they get they deserve. But they get expanded on in the show, some try to defect and Zurg sends a Bounty Hunter to kill them (watch Shiv Katal episode for context), so the rest just stay because they literally can't leave as far as they see it. But Zurg also gives his minions vacations and paid time off, even lets one leave work early to go to a relative's wedding, so that also plays a factor in why they stay working for him.

Lightyear had a lot of potential but was wasted with two useless side characters, a plot twist that was extremely forced and the story didn’t really go anywhere. What annoys me most is the media coverage surrounding it. Saying “it’s under attack by homophobes and racist” while there’s a very vocal minority. The media and many on social media twist it as a way to “show them up” by going to see the movie, because of its “representation”. I never saw the whole series or its pilot-film, but I remember watching a few episodes that popped up on Disney Channel (or was it Toon Disney?) while we waited for Lilo & Stitch: The Series to air. I remember enjoying a lot of the episodes I saw, especially those featuring the literal energy-vampire NOS-4-A2 or Ty Parsec/Wirewolf. I loved the darker aspects of the episodes (seriously, there's no way the studio would have gotten away with showing Wirewolf tearing apart and dismembering the robots on Canis Lunis (complete with blue "blood"!) if they had been humans). I loved the universe's take on the vampire and the werewolf tropes, and I loved the designs of the characters, and I wish Ty had been a reoccurring character. I also enjoyed the episode where Buzz and his team had to help this woman who was hunting NOS-4-A2 after the energy-vampire murdered her robot parents, as well as the episode where XR got brainwashed by NOS-4-A2. Again, if the robot bodies in NOS-4-A2's lair had been humans, there's no way the studio would have gotten away with showing those! Some of the humor was pretty adult, if I recall. One episode had XR, who was brainwashed by NOS, asking, "Care to make it a threesome?" when NOS and XL were laughing maniacally about something, only for them to stop laughing and ponder about it for a moment, and then start laughing again with XR. The word "threesome" flew over my head as a kid, but now that I'm grown-up, I know what the word usually refers to. How the heck they managed to squeeze THAT one in there, I do not know! XD Mira Nova was also a great female character, not once talking down the males to make herself look better or overpowering everyone. Booster was a big sweetie and heart of the group, and XR was cute comic relief. All of them each had their own unique personalities and qualities that made them individuals. And there was diversity among the group, as Mira was technically a a redhead AND a person-of-color, albeit blue, and Booster was plus-sized. And Ty was slightly ambiguously brown or had a slight olive complexion, if I recall correctly. If they made a live-action TV series or films based on BLoSC, Mira could be played by anyone with any ethnic background as long as they wear a blue suit like Gamora (and what they should have done with Starfire).

The Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command film and series are The Definition of Fantastic. It’s self aware of how corny & Cliché it is. The animation is honestly really good and very fun to watch. The characters feel real and enjoyable to listen and watch. Especially Evil Emperor Zurg played Beautifully by Wayne Knight. (CURSE YOU BUZZ LIGHTYEAR!!!) and overall it’s FUN! Actually fun, awesome, and just a brilliant show! Unlike Lightyear which feels Hollow, Cold, Sterile and just plain Boring.

0:27, actually after watching Lightyear, I ended up rewatching Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins for the first time since I was a kid watching it on VCR and I liked it a lot better than the new film (which was essentially a loose remake). Since then I’ve been watching the actual show and it’s actually a lot better than I thought it would be. Though that does mean the glass can be half-full since the Lightyear movie has seemingly gotten more people into Buzz Lightyear of Star Command

If Pixar was _still_ obsessed with making sequels, then why didn’t they put this on a DVD release like Disney does?

Same thing they should have done with the DCEU, pull from the animated series and stop giving Zach work.

Disney wasted 200 million dollars to make Buzz unenjoyable.... nope....this is never the super hero that Andy idolizes...the cartoon Star Command is the true Buzz!

Lightyear was more limited than I'd expect from a Buzz Lightyear movie, its only set on a single planet.

Haven't seen the movie but I definitely watched the show. ^^ I am disappointed that they didn't use it as a reference for the movie. That would've been awesome. 😃

I was pretty mid on Lightyear as well. I think I would have liked it better if the Toy Story franchise never happend.

It's kinda sobering to think the Toy Story franchise has been going so long, that this spinoff of 'real' Buzz's adventures is so old and all but forgotten, that Disney felt confident in creating a whole new and different one. It's hard to think of something similar to compare it to.

I loved the animated series. Buzz was like adam west batman mixed with flash Gordon, his team were memorable and the villains were awesome.

I never watched the show because it wasnt on the air by the time i found out it existed, but i did watch the movie as a child, it was an enjoyable story and it's a solid base to expand upon. When i heard about Lightyear i thought it was a reboot of sorts, and i think even that would have been better received than what they delivered.

I saw Lightyear when it came out and as a fan of the animated film and show, I had high hopes for the film. Sadly the time traveling old Buzz claiming to be Zurg nearly made me shout in my chair. I am so angry that Disney went with such a cop-out ending. But! I firmly believe that Lightyear can redeem itself in a sequel, granted that the writing stays on track this time.

I know they tried to say the new lightyear movie is what Andy saw that made him get the toy. I call bs on that as this cartoon is way more believable in a kid wanting to get the toy. Plus its a fun show.
