DAN! You probably weren't aware of this when you named your speedrunning Gator, but I NEED YOU TO KNOW THIS: "Flink" is a German word meaning "fast", "swift" or "nimble"! A very fitting name!

Flink is very flink, I think.

Dan Olson ran Amy at GDQ, anything's possible with smaller games like this.
@-j2367

I'm thinking it would need to be applied to "a rookie's attempted runs" or "learning the run" rather than a polished performance. Would not the actual record holders or contenders be the point of GDQ otherwise? However, I mean, if Dan F. WANTED to chase that I wouldn't root against him. Although would Carrie and Dan J be good commentators for serious runs? Dan F would want them by his side of course but the being nn-distracting commenting is a skillset too. Hm. WEll, bonus points for the suggestion, Pauldetyrion, wonder if something DOES come it?
@Duiker36
Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd feel kinda bad for the actual record holders in the game if they submitted a run and PlayFrame beats them out due to popularity. That's a helluva way to smack down smaller creators, even unintentionally. And ItzBytez seems to have submitted to SGDQ2023 and been accepted, and I'd say they're way more deserving of the slot than Dan would be even if he wanted it.

My favorite thing about the speedrunning community is a short summary of the requirements. Paraphrased: "If you're using a timer and trying to go fast, you are speedrunning. You're a speedrunner. Routing, glitching, strats, all of those come with improvement. None of them are a barrier to entry." Congratulations on entering the Videogame Olympics, Dan!

As I strongly associate both of the speedruns I've learned (Sayonara Wild Hearts and Hollow Knight) with this channel, it's exciting to see you pick up one for yourself as well! Well done!
@hoodiesticks
Жыл бұрын
Wait, how do you speedrun Sayonara? Isn't that just an arcade run?
@MrDivinity22
Жыл бұрын
@@hoodiesticks More or less. There are some cutscene skips that require precise timing, and depending on the category (any% or NoDeathSkips) you can either use intentional deaths to skip some parts (the narrator comes in to offer you skips if you die at the same Spot multiple times), and/or you (probably) need to practice to get the whole game deathless.
@MrDivinity22
Жыл бұрын
@@hoodiesticks That said, this is the reason that most of the leaderboard times are very close together. And it's basically dead, because you can have an almost perfect run fairly easily, and then you're only restricted by loading times. I ran for a week or so, got third place in NoDeathSkips and that run still stands in 6th place one and a half years later *shrugs It's not a very competitive run, but it's easy to learn and a good excuse to play more Sayonara.

Being "on the board" just means that you have submitted a speedrun, the leaderboard extends for as many people have submitted a valid run (each person's personal best is shown by default). But it is somehow nice to see him there, I agree :D

One thing that can also be surprisingly fun is watching those videos about the history of certain categories. How fun to have Dan take us through his process and then to let us accompany you guys during this first run you officially submit. Keep filming other steps in your journey, such as if you explore doing All Friends. Don't know MUCH about KZitem but under the belief that more content is usually rewarded, you guys are fun enough that I can't see an occasional release of your speedrun adventures, especially when you try new stuff. Look, all I'm saying is after I discovered your channel, when taking into account there's a couple games I frankly don't want to see, it's actually conceivable I could run out of content around here someday (I use you and Barry Kramer for a lot of background cheerful playing fun). 1:00: I'm familiar with speedrunning, but I tend to find explaining routing, tricks, and so forth more interesting than the actual run. I'll rewatch OneShortEye explaining how to speedrun _King's Quest_ way more than I'd watch him actually speedrun _King's Quest._ 29:30: To me, speedrunning is less interesting the more you focus on competition. I find runner vs. runner fights over leaderboard position less compelling than community vs. game, focusing on how _all_ the runners _working together_ find new ways to beat the game faster. (It's one reason I like OneShortEye's speedrunning videos more than, say, Summoning Salt's.) 38:38: It ain't the wild west of the oughts-era speedrunning scene. (So many speedrunning videos start with something like "Speedrunner Morbutz said they got a 1:43:02 time, and we have no way of verifying or disproving that claim." Followed shortly by "Video of jun's historic sub-53 run has been lost to the sands of time".) 19:15: Two fun speedrun tricks in a row. 30:55: Carrie is allowed to have that opinion. I'm allowed to think back on all the adventure game speedruns where RNG is the primary determinant of whether you can get a decent time or not and disagree. 37:20: Carrie is allowed to make that point, and I'm allowed to agree with it. It's good. 40:35: It's nice to see a speedrun mode that really gets what speedrunners need. 45:55: The ubiquitous timer program is definitely a neat bit of speedrunning imagery. It keeps track of where you're doing well, where you're doing bad, and how close you've come to your theoretical PB. According to speedrun.com, ItzBytez has lost first-place Any% to Ero, but maintains first place in the other categories. Dan has 24th place, which probably sounds more impressive if you don't look up how many runners are listed on speedrun.com.
