Back in the early 90's, I was walking through a fancy shopping mall near Boston and could hear a jazz group playing live in the distance. As I got closer, the drummer launched into a solo and my jaw hit the floor. It was Lil John ,and he was amazing back then!

This is experience is so very special 🥁 😍I'm a total fan of this man's life work. 🥰 I wonder if 19 y.o. Lil John Roberts realized how important to so many, and truly how far the discipline of his Musicianship would bring him. Musicians EVERYWHERE be encouraged. Matt. 19:26 says You can do all things through Christ! Congratulations John😊 ya always make me smile w/ my musical heart & believe in my highest dreams. Before seeing the details, I thought it was aluminum because of the crisp, dry tone. And with Clyde's sound as a goal, I think the silicone filled edges really do achieve that. I need to get my hands on one of these!

There is a Japanese, artist Soul Toul, and his sig snare seems to be almost the same. Black Steel shell and silicon bead. I played it at a store in Japan and thought the sound is excellent and the price point is affordable. I like the powder coated blue on this snare and the linear snare strainer features. Steel shells can sound wonky but Tama knows how to get the best out of em.

I met lil John at a place called The Five Spot in little 5 points ATL(he was sitting at the bar and he had a green Mohawk). He brought a band to play and asked if I knew of them(of course I said no). This was over ten years ago and it was one of their first gigs(as a matter of fact one of the guitarists asked me where they could get gigs). That band was Snarky Puppy. True story. As a matter of fact Sput wasn’t in the band yet…it was some other guy who played a bright green Mapex kit.

Got to play on one of these at my local music store. The videos available don't do justice of the full scope of sound and feel this drum achieves, its really something, I was a bit unsure about the use of steel on the shell, specially considering the type drums and drummers that inspired the conception of this drum, ..Well this snare blew my presumptions and expectations out of the water, its got all kinds body and punch and yet superarticulate and sensitive(not overly) ,great crack with those diecast hoops, super warm and responsive ( kinda woody and dry too),you just wanna play on it. Its definately not a one trick pony , tried a bunch of stuff Rock, blues ,funk, ska, some train bets..It gives back what you lay on it,very cool drum. i was worried the silicone would make the drum sound to muffled but still pingy ..instead you get this sweet and really controlled ring , almost compressed/miced type sound and feel. I tried a couple diff drums to compare Tama and others, bit including a Black Beauty ( Im not saying they sound or feel similar) and it held up in terms of playability, tuning and fun factor in my opinion. Im usually skeptical of signature drums,as I find them overated and overpriced for the most part, this is however a pretty good score, i think.

Seems like an upgraded version of the Metal Works snare? Has the same hardware and what looks to be the same shell except for the silicone bead on the inside? I’ve always liked Tama’s steel shell snares, the best sounding in the biz!

Super curious about why the choice was made to go with a steel shell with silicone filled edges rather than chromed aluminum. Stubblefield, like most of the guys at the time, used a supraphonic. This drum comes close to that sound but a lot of steps had to be added (silicone, powdercoating, etc) to get there. Asking purely because I'm curious. Drum design is a big interest of mine.

That new Star kit in the back is so beautiful. My only complaint about John's snare is that u cannot tell it is a Tama from a distance - the rounded badge makes me think Pearl or something else. A traditional Tama logo would have been better imho.
