2022 is the year of the Lilac!
Lilacs are one of the most cold hardy shrubs you can have in your garden.
The hardiness zone for Lilacs is 3-7.
Lilacs don’t require a lot fertilizer but if you do fertilize, use a granular that is lower in nitrogen (NPK). I like to use Rose Tone by Espoma. Sprinkle your fertilizer around the drip line in early Spring.
I remove the spent blooms just after they finish blooming. If you have a reblooming lilac, this will encourage the next flush of blooms and the shrub will put it’s energy into producing the next flush of blooms.
Lilacs bloom on “old wood” so if any pruning is needed, it should be done immediately after blooming, that way you won’t cut off any of next year’s blooms.
Lilacs are great to have in your garden because the provide food for the early pollinators.
Lots of the newer varieties of Lilacs are less disease resistant which can be a factor in some of the varieties. Powdery mildew can sometimes be an issue at the end of the season. No treatment is really needed for powdery mildew it’s just more of an annoyance.
One of my resources for Lilacs that are more disease resistant is Proven Winners.
They are also known to be highly deer resistant-that’s a bonus!
