Interesting. It's not as bright as I thought it would be, considering it was used for stage lighting. But then again, in a world before electric lights, this was probably blindingly-bright as indoor lighting goes.

This is just a demonstration with a welding torch and a rock. An actual lime lamp would be designed with higher surface area and carefully calibrated burner. And also reflectors and lenses to direct and focus the light.

Don't let the automatic closing of the camera aperture (what controls too much light getting into the camera lens) fool you. No one shut the lights off in the room as it got brighter. That is the camera reducing the aperture. It's now pretty bright in there. He didn't don welding googles instead of good sunglasses for no reason.

I am curious if the candoluminescence requires open flame or just can be done by heating up the lime in any way. Wikipedia page says that the principle of this lies in the cathalytic recombination mechanism which requires the presence of the fuel and oxidizer. For example if I take the thin platinum wire, cover it with lime dust and run a current through it to reach the 1200 degrees Celsius, will it produce a light this bright?

hydrogen was made by placing zinc, or other metals in a strong acid, or base. back then hydrogen was used for balloons. another fascinating fact is that Calcium Carbide was used back then to produce acetylene for gas lamps (the same gas used in the cutting torch in this video.). it worked by just adding water.

Usually hydrogen. But oddly trying to produce the hydrogen to keep limelights in lighthouses lit all night led to greatly improved electrical generation which ended the use of limelight in lighthouses because by the time they had the electricity to liberate enough hydrogen to keep a limelight lit all night they had the power to use arclights which are brighter than limelights.

@junkdeal
Жыл бұрын
I’ve always thought the oxy-acetylene flame was the hottest flame possible. I gotta look that up I guess…..I would wonder if the oxy-acetylene flame would work for making a limelight, but I am guessing one advantage of the oxy-H is that it is a truly non-carbon containing fuel source, and wouldn’t enter into the reaction as a carbon contamination or reaction. I am only broadly guessing at this , but this is why hydrogen is a clean pure source of fuel- no carbon-containing precursor to Co2 or unburned hydrocarbon.
