Happy birthday Marshall, this show has single handedly made Limited my favorite way to play magic. Because of LSV’s channel I am also in the process of making my own cube. Excited for everything you guys put out for the next year!!

Marshall's story about Wyatt's watch was so heartwarming! Totally agree with LSV - if Marshall wants to talk about the watch channel more on the show, I'm all for it. Personally, Ive only watched him repair 2 or 3 watches, but I definitely enjoyed them! As someone who has no interest in watches, I can't quite explain what I find interesting about the videos, but I think it's because the enthusiasm and care Marshall shows is infectious. Happy New Year, gents. Thanks for all you do.

I didn't mind ONE as a set tbh. I didn't love it, but it wasn't horrendous in my mind. It was fine. The balance of the archtypes was off, but almost every set this year had that problem. I thought the Corrupted mechanic worked well where it gave a certain tension about letting them attack with toxic creatures. The 'For Mirrodin!' equipment cards were cool and finally made equipment work (unfortunately the rw signpost uncommon was too powerful). The oil counters worked well mostly where they were mostly just a couple of times you could use them, but maybe you had some proliferate cards in your deck and then you had the interesting dynamic of whether you use the oil counters or wait till you can draw your proliferate card to get more oil. So yeah, the set had some good stuff in it even if it wasn't great.

I encourage designing a cube for a smaller group. We have a group of four, and can sometimes grab a few extra drafters. So we have a smaller cube.

Yeah I mean we have drafted my cube with 3 and even just 2 of us. Do more packs or bonus piles or whatever you think is fun. I quite like the draft/sealed hybrid. Either start with 3 packs then draft a load or draft then get a random set of cards like a sealed pool to finish it off. We also sometimes draft 2 decks each and play single player 2 headed giant or pretend both decks are 2 separate players and play rounds.

I think Tempted by the Ring was the best mechanic of the year. It was a gimmick that warped the whole set but rather than making it feel more cheesy and frustrating it made it more fun and interesting imo.

Cube seems super fun but I have a noob question... How does the cube's creator not have a huge advantage over the other 7 players in the draft cube?
@casparash5370

I mean if you have a card list beforehand that people can look at and you have clearly defined archetypes then it's fair enough. You don't get to pick your cards. Also some people are just better or worse at cube. Building the cube might even restrict you as you have set ideas about certain synergistic pieces and may limit yourself by accident. I think it's a negligible advantage as long as the standard of player at the table is relatively balanced.

I think the UG issue is mostly the same issue it has in Constructed. It's fine if it plays an aggro gameplan (as it can in LCI, but it can't do the Explore build around because everyone wants Explore cards), but if it tries to do the ramp stuff, it's usually better to go 3+ color like in Dominaria United, or it struggles to survive to the late game as creatures and removal is priced so that blocking is not an effective strategy. I think this is to discourage board stalls, but like in sets such as Khans, UG relies on it due to the general weakness of its removal when it's trying to play the long game as in Sultai. The UG interaction in Khans is much closer to other colors than in more recent years, and UG is a serious contender as an archetype. This is also true for UG in Shadows over Innistrad Remastered, which I'm sad didn't get a shout out being a new format even if it didn't have new cards between the rarity shifts and bonus sheet.

Hmmmm, I think Convoke is not a good mechanic tbh. I think it's really punishing to new players and flies against the mana system. When someone is tapped out, it should mean they're tapped out, not that their untapped blockers can also cast spells for them. I think for us decent magic Arena players it adds an extra wrinkle of figuring out what cards they could have based on priority being held. But for paper magic and for new players in general it's a bad mechanic that goes against the traditional logic of the game. Side note: I also disagree that mana flood/screw is something that you wouldn't want to get rid of entirely if you could. Whenever a player gets mana flooded or screwed you don't get a proper game and it's a waste of time for both players. I think having one turn or two without getting the mana you need is okay and makes for interesting gameplay decisions, but flooding and screw is more than that and if I could get rid of it entirely I definitely would.

UG doesn’t have an identity because they keep giving it to other colours. RW “target your own permanents with tricks”, BG incremental card advantage, UW blink, are all great fits for UG because, philosophically, UG should be about growth and adaptation. Like damn. Even tokens would fit. Tokens come from instants and sorceries and they create creatures.

I think that wotc is afraid of making UG too powerful. Cards like growth spiral, frilled mystic and uro had an identity of sorts, but they warped standard around them (not to even mention Oko). I think that something in that ramp plus tempo/card draw vein, finishing the games up with a big spell is the right direction for UG, but I can see how it may be a little too powerful for smaller formats

@AB-sw4kb

Yeah, it also plays to the individual colors' strengths. Green has efficient beaters and blue has interaction. And as a color pair, the identity has to be cohesive enough for the archetype to show in its individual colors. For example, in Ravnica sets, Simic is the +1/+1 counters guild, so mono-blue creatures in the set get +1/+1 cards. That's normally a GW mechanic, but because the color PAIR features that mechanic, then the mono-colored cards do too.

I think when Simic has a mechanic to truly build around, which happens most in guild sets it performs best. Someone else mentioned that the reason for that might be because that mechanic then shows up on mono color cards of both colors which helps tie the colors together in a way they normally aren’t. Definitely food for thought moving forward
