The walls of Lincoln Mall will come tumbling down after four decades as the pioneer of malls in the southern suburbs. A joint motion for demolition was filed by the Village of Matteson and Collateral Trustee (Receiver for Lincoln Mall) due to safety concerns within the vacant mall. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Tom Condon approved the motion and ordered demolition of the mall. Built in 1973, Lincoln Mall became the catalyst that spurred economic growth in Matteson. Now more than 30 years later, the shuttered Lincoln Mall will be demolished over a 14 week period. Carson Pirie Scott is the only department store that will remain open and operating of the once four-anchored department store mall. More than a million dollars have been reinvested in Carson Pirie Scott to continue its operation and function as a stand-alone detached unit.
