Taped in 1991, this conversation between two Maryland Poets Laureate, Lucille Clifton and Linda Pastan, is informal shop talk. Pastan discusses the role of the Poet Laureate, a post she was then serving, and the “edge of darkness” in her work, then reads “Elegy.” Pastan reads “At the Gynecologist’s,” which prompts comments on the wide range of accepted subject matter in contemporary women’s poetry, followed by a reading of “Notes from the Delivery Room.” Clifton and Pastan describe the difference between fact and poetic truth, and discuss the teaching of poetry, with Pastan reading “Only Child.” After considering her relationship with Maryland, she reads “Beall Mountain Seasonal.” Pastan describes her method of writing and reads “The Way the Leaves Keep Falling,” and, in closing, “Gleaming.”
