The way I heard the story is that Jagger suggested to Linda that she sing more Rock. So she covered this song of Jagger's. When he heard her version of Tumbling Dice he said, "Well, it's her song now."

One of my favorite things about Linda Ronstadt is that in pretty much every live song she sings, she takes a few minutes to step back and let the musicians have their turn in the spotlight, like she is saying, 'i know I couldn't do it without these guys." Pretty classy.

One of the myriad great things about Linda's voice is that she could sound extremely dulcet and lyrical or she could sound sexy and gritty. Most singers are lucky to be able to do one of those two things well: Linda's voice and personality had the range (and commitment) to do both. Linda never saw herself as a "rock singer" and resisted that title; instead she viewed herself as primarily a ballad singer, which she most definitely was. But she could sing anything--and often did. I saw her live about 12 times over many years and watching her evolution as a singer was a true gift.

Linda was very much a woman of the time. The 70s was a time of women taking control of their lives and not letting a man make their decisions for them. This is evidenced by Linda's breakup with her boyfriend at the time she was putting together her 4th solo album Don't Cry Now. She had been romantically involved with the producers of her earlier albums. Peter Asher who had become her manager finished producing Don't Cry Now and Linda never had a romantic relationship. DCN became her first gold album and the rest is history. The first female to have 3 platinum albums in a row and the streak didn't stop till she had 5.

I remember this clip from when it came out in the movie "FM". Saw it at a drive in, in Canada. No KZitem or even MTV, obviously, in 1977. No cell phones. No internet...A real period piece now, that movie captures the feeling of that time when FM radio was almost subversive--live, high resolution sound, real time DJs playing whole albums uninterupted sometimes and exploring music outside the tightly controlled pop music shows typical of AM of the day. Linda Ronstadt is part of a cutting edge simulcast in the movie (the tech crew appears at the strat of this clip) if I recall correctly. WKRP in Cincinnati, the tv show came out around the same time. Oh, and another quirky and unpredictable little show that showcased live music was in its third season: Saturday Night Live. A great era to be a teenager! And yes, we all loved Linda Ronstadt.
