Her transformation has already begun in 2000 as it was her most consistent and confident season since 93 or 94

Unbelievable she only won Wimbledon once, grass looks like the perfect surface for her game. She lost four times to Venus but in two occasions she could have won those matches and then of course the defeat in 04 to Sharapova

Yes Davenport had a way of losing matches when she had at least as good a chance of winning as her opponent, and it just needed her to want it as much as they did. She was very good when she was having it all her own way, but when it was 4 all in the final set, generally not so good. But then, she had the game to have it all her own way quite often! Some said she didn't believe in herself enough. Maybe, but I tend to see it more as not wanting the wins as much as some of her opponents did. The greatest of champions tend to have a refusal to lose mode, and Lindsay never did.

@@tomgraham6071 I agree, not the greatest of fighters but still only three GS for a such talented player makes no sense. The body was her biggest enemy

exactly… she should have won Wimbledon 04 and 05, USO 04 and AO 2001 and 2005 8 slams is right for her talent

@@danielgoncalves8079 not sure about 2001 Australian Open as Capriati was quite a deserved winner there, and she'd lost to Hingis in the Sydney final weeks earlier. But the others you've selected I would agree with. I think when you look at her later record against Mauresmo, you might wonder whether she could have won the AO in 1999 when she was playing so well.

@@danielgoncalves8079 I would say AO99 instead of AO01, she was not playing well that time. Other than that I agree, the 5 to 10 Slam range

The best hitter of a tennis ball there ever was in women's tennis, Lindsay Davenport. She just made it all look so easy, and the sound off her racket was like music.

I agree, the sheer easy power she could generate has been unprecedented so far. Pierce, Seles off the backhand side, Kvitova came close but not quite

@@pasqualeferraro84 I don't think any of those players come close in terms of clean ball striking. It wasn't just Lindsay's ball striking, it was her positioning to set up her shots. Everything was perfect. She wasn't a fast mover but she also had great control of the racket head off balance, so with her reach that mitigated her lack of speed.

The gameplan against Capriati was always to attack the poor technique and balance on her backhand side until you opened up her forehand court - and then it’s game over. Lindsay did that beautifully against Jennifer each time they played, except when she lost to Jennifer in the 2001 AO semifinals.

Lindsay had beaten Capriati in the semifinals at the AO that year, and that success continued here in this match. This was one of Lindsay’s last opportunities to win a major as she would lose in the final to Venus and never win another major title for the remainder of her career.
