Thanks for the overview and your opinions on the XL. I tend to agree with you. As an owner of an HX Stomp paired with an MC6 I have all of this covered other than four snapshots. My arrangement is pricier than the XL so there's that. More flexibility and DSP than my PodGo. Basically a tweener option for those that don't want to learn PC and CC midi messages. More convenient for a newer user. Best feature is all ins/outs in one location and that volume knob!

I think it was targeted for people like myself who liked the idea that the HX Stomp was intended to be paired with your favorite effects and live on a pedalboard, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of only three buttons or having to get a third party device to add functionality. Yes it's close to the price of a used LT, but an LT isn't practical or even really needed when you are using effects of your own in conjunction with the HX. So for me it's a win and I plan on being an early adopter :)

Just thinking out loud here...to me, the value of the Stomp is that it fits on a medium sized pedal board and leaves room for lots of other pedals (that I have already invested heavily into). And given this, even the lack of DSP is minimal since you can get your verb/delay from other pedals if needed. Anything larger than the basic stomp goes into a whole other category where there are quite a few other options and higher prices. I'm still leaning towards buying the basic unit since I will probably use it mostly for amps and cabs. My two cents.

I have an HX stomp and full helix and the mc6 mkii midi. I like the hd stomp to run the poly effects through the helix's FX loop effectively adding dsp to the helix and without having to change my helix presets on one of the signal chains. So I prefer the small form factor. Alternately I use (and used to use before getting the hd stomp) the ehx pitchfork which works as well as the poly FX (except 1 of them which is smoother - I've forgotten which) and is smaller. But the hd stomp also gives me the dsp heavy 12 string and other options without having to change the helix presets (I'm a power user - super serial from the start 2015/16) for not much more space than the pitchfork. With the Mc6 mkii I get quite a few benefits compared to the XL. I can use 2 separate expression pedal the the mc6 and still have an extra 2 Vs with my boss fs7 in the HX stomp's dedicated exp jack. In the XL you could hook up a midi too but I think that's overkill and if you don't you'd be stuck with the either fs 4 and 5 or an Exp pedal (not sure if you can plug in 2 exp pedals via trs y cable). The choice is between exp or fs4/5 and with the mc6ii I have both. Also in 1 bank of the mc6mkii I have all 6 FX bypass + the 2/3 on the stomp + fs 4/5 via Exp jack if needed so 11 all up and 2 exp pedals. On a 2nd I have the snap/stomp/preset mode. So I guess I'd just be missing out on the FX edit mode but I can plug 2 exp pedals (say one for wah/pitch and the other for amp chnl volume) and 2 extra footswitch simultaneously (I used a lot of controller assign stuff with both). I guess I prefer the flexibility of the size of the normal hx stomp for integration with my helix and the extra options with the Mc6 mkii. I'm waiting for more dsp to match the current competitions and to make the new fw3 poly features more intergratable to my current patches.

From a business standpoint, it seems that they didn’t add DSP to keep from cannibalizing LT sales. If there was more to it, I would upgrade, but with having an HX Stomp and a Helix, I can’t justify buying an XL. On the adapter, if you noticed when you pull it out of the electrical socket the side light stays on for about two minutes until the capacitor inside of it finally drains. Which means that if you accidentally touch both prongs on it before it drains, you’ll be what it drains through. Which I measured at 300 millivolts when first taken out of the wall socket. Something to avoid.

Definitely seems to be targeted towards people that found the controls a little limited. I’ve built travel rigs for a few artists, and I passed on the HX stomp because it was more complications & cables than a Helix XT or Fractal AX8 (RIP). I’m very interested in this now. For most gigs the HX Stomp has just enough horsepower. I wouldn’t mind some extra DSP slots, but it’s really cool, nonetheless. I get it does nothing to woo the current HX Stomp users that have it integrated already! Great video! Super thorough! If I start spec’ing these for people, I’ll tell Line 6 I heard it from you in the warranty registration!

I feel like what makes this more interesting to me is, im not really a fan of the time based effects in the helix family, but i kove the functionality it has with midi i/o when using with a real amp. Like the drives work great pushing the front of an amp and i like being able to automate several front end changes quickly but also still have it help in routing my personal favorite delays and verbs (strymon). I think this will integrate better with hybrid boards then the hx effects would and also can still do some of the hx lt features.

Hahaha! Love your critique of the wall wart! I think it IS a big deal to put in VDI, because they didn't. I would never buy it because of this. That said, if I were a NORMAL guitarist (assuredly, I am not) I would easily choose this over the Stomp. A board with that many options and that few footswitches would not make any sense for me. That said, yes, it DOES need to have 6 Snaps and some kind of alternative Bank selection mode. Question: can you add switches to it like you can with the Stomp? You can't with my LT (yes, I would sell my soul for another bank of footswitches, sue me).

I have the HX Stomp and I love, love, LOVE it. If the XL had been available, I'd have still bought the regular Stomp, but I'm in favor of the XL option for those who want something that's even more expensive than the Pod Go and still doesn't have a volume/wah pedal. If you put it that way, it's kinda weird. But I'm sure some will love the additions.

Im trying to decide between this unit and the pod go. So far the only thing I understand is better in the hx stomp is the possibility of dual amp (in terms of block usage. I know there's a lot more). Am I right? I mean, you have 8 totally free blocks instead of the 4 free blocks you get in the pod go, but one is gonna be your amp (obviously) so that's 1 less. Volume pedal, 2 less. Wah pedal, 3 less. So, assuming every guitarist would always want this 3 blocks (honestly I don't see why you wouldn't) you have in fact 5 blocks (not 8) to choose from. Further more, if you add an eq you get...surprise surprise...EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF FREE BLOCKS AS THE POD GO. Some correct me if Im wrong, but I don't see how this is an improvement. The real jump in power is the helix line. Anyghing less is just a fancy pod go.

I definitely feel like I’m the target for this haha. I went with the POD Go, because while I absolutely prefer the signal chain modularity of the Stomp, because I’m sometimes a bit of a tapdancer and have a tendency towards multiple presets, I needed the extra buttons on the POD Go. Seeing as I don’t use the expression pedal that much, I think I just might have to swap out my POD when this drops as this has the best of both units for me.

Hey Steve. Thanks for your honest opinions on the good, bad and ugly with the stomp. Your video is an introduction to understand it's capabilities. I'm considering trading up to get something more customizable from my Digitech RP360XP. I would love a unit that has an expression pedal attached. Sounds like it may be a Pod Go. But that's a big unit. I only use a few different tones for my bass like phaser, chorus, octave, 70's tone. I'm completely new to the idea of using cab sims tweaking things. I don't have the time to really mess around. I'm more of a hobbyist/band member. Anyway, thanks for a really knowledgeable video. Keep up the good work ✌️😎👍🎸

I think its a great product that solves a lot of problems people have been giving. More footswitches, more snapshots (ok, just one more), mode switch, visuals on the screen same as the LT is a great touch. Will I buy? I don't think so. In terms of a grab and go, the Pod Go looks like a better solution for me personally. I'm looking to buy another HX Stomp to integrate into my rack for switchable-by-midi poly pitch to access different tunings on the fly but the HX Stomp XL is too much hardware for this. Still, a great product. Definitely going after the 'buying an extra midi controller' customers. I went M13 to Helix Floor to HX Stomp and MC6, back to Helix Floor and now I have a beast of a rack with a Helix Rack that I'm wanting to add an HX Stomp to.

Instead of building a giant rack, I caught sight if this little fella, and it looked interesting. Not gonna lie, I'm very visual, and the colorful buttons made me go "Hmm..." Anyways, is there a walk through of the actual effects that one will get with the unit? As an LT user, I would have preferred to see a smaller LT, rather than a bigger Stomp. Get rid of the expression pedal and use an external one, like the mission engineering one, if one so chooses.
