Thanks for the vid Tony. I really needed this as I was having the same problem with my B string on my Variax 700. I bought the new little pickup like you show, but I needed to get some tips from someone who has actually done it. Now I'm ready to dig in and do some fixin'.

Thanks for the vid, brother. I had a similar situation happen last night, D string was really weak. Used my backup JTV89 pawnshop special for the evening. Today I restrung the 69 (identical to yours) and wiggled around the piezo, hoping to re-establish the ground. It appears to have worked for the time being, but after watching your video I know that I can pull that piezo up a bit and clean out the pocket. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I think I just bought the last "new" 89F in the US. However the Alt Tuning knob is missing the cap, the charger only came with the UK plug and the G string has very low output on the modelling side. Same as you described yours. I just got it today and I was assured it came with a full warranty. So I'll probably have someone else take care of this for me but just in case... I'm really glad you took the time to make the video that no one else did. Actually since these have been discontinued I bought this as my second one for a back up.

Awesome vid Tony, I have a brand new JTV 69 same color as yours and I love it. I bought an 89F and had the tremolo bar insert be too small. I had jammed it in so badly that I had to disassemble the bridge to take the tremolo bar keeper out of the bridge to fix it. The insert was pressed together and that caused the inside where The tremolo bar post to sit be about .020" to narrow all the way around. Had to punch out with a hammer and punch!. Ground out the insert with a Dremel tool and all is fine now. I called my sales rep where I bought the guitar from and told him to contact Line 6 quality control to inform their Chinese outsourcing to fix the press...Manufacturing these days is suspect at times. I'm glad i watched your vid in case I have any issues with my Piezo pickups i can fix them. Thanks man!.

John Kruton do you know what type of push in trem bar works with these bridges? Thanks
@johnkruton9708
5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewpearce5477 Sorry for the late reply, I just revisited this vid and saw your question. This model comes with a straight push in bar with no locking nut attached to the bar like the ones I''m used to on my Floyd Rose knockoffs. I took my digital calipers to the diameters of the 3 whammy bars I own and I discovered these dimensions. Variax 89F with graphtech Floyd Rose copy measured at .230" diameter at insert. My JTV 69 Variax with the straight push in chrome bar was a bit smaller at .216". My Ibanez s470 with Ibaneze FR copy is .235" diameter. So there seems to be some variation amongst various copies. I'd be interested to know what a branded Floyd Rose diameter is at. The problem with my delivered 89F was the actual insert inside the bridge was stamped with a smaller or worn die that made the bar not fit at all. Not even close. I could have returned the guitar but I'm a fab/machinist/mechanic by trade so I took on the task to fix it myself. Guitar worked fine before and now works better.

Great video. For me it is also the same D-strong piezo that sounded very dull and almost half as loud as the other onces. I looked around for a replacement piezo but noone appears to hasvd this part in stock anymore in the US. Glad i saw you describe the part abput the grounding and how it needs to be cleaned. So i went ahead an sprayed some deoxid on the piezo/saddle and let it do it’s work. It actually made the piezo sound a lot louder and brighter again. So that is definitely worth trying out first too for folks if their piezo sounds very dull and low output. I think in my case it was indeed a little bit ‘dirty’ grounding issue.

I'm currently having an issue with my JTV-69 where my high E and B strings seem about 3dB quieter than all the rest. I turned the rest down in workbench to compensate for now, but it's annoying. Also tried dripping Deoxit in the saddles as suggested on the forums.

Yesterday evening I had also some piezo troubles with my JTV-69. From one moment to another four strings were "dead" with no tone coming out. Ouch! I first thought the electronics failed and so I checked the pickup plate and the electronic main board. But couldn´t see any issues like loosened plugs or broken cables. Pickup mode always plays correct. Fortunately the tremolo unit fell into my hand while loosening the strings. I knocked on those little metal parts - obviousely the piezos - and four of them were dead. I took a fine brush to clean them and suddenly one more works again. After and after while I was knocking and brushing around them all three other piezos came back to function. I have no good explanation of what went wrong. Perhaps the piezos had lost ground contact but why then all four at the same moment?......McMurphy will know.

Possible but more likely it is dirt causing a bad ground where the piezo fits in or replace the piezo.

I am having the same issue with my old Variax 700, only its my B string that is completely out. How did you unsodder the original piezo? Are you talking about the round cap that seems to be holding the original one in place? Sorry if the questions seems dumb. I have to get a soldering kit to even do this but I have to get this fixed an I don't want to have to ship this across the country to get it fixed. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I haven't had a '700' but from the images I see online the bridge looks pretty much the same. If you've never done any soldiering I would have someone else do it for you as the wires are very fine and if you get them too hot you can damage it. If you do it yourself watch some KZitem videos on soldering techniques first.

mine is a 700 and I found that I just touched the soldering iron to the connection and it came apart instantly, literally Another Touch to reconnect the new Piezo it was surprisingly easy. none of the silicon was present on mine so I assumed when I had Sweetwater repair a Piezo a few years ago they simply took it off and didn't replace it. Must not be that important lol :-)

good to see it's simple to replace a transducer... but I wonder why you did not just unplug the molex connector, so you could completely remove the bridge, so you could solder on a bench, and not over the guitar. Best to unplug from the back, before pulling the bridge out. But, great result, and nice sound demo too!

The battery looks exactly the same and plugs into the Variax but won't work. I have seen posts that you can make a small adjustment to the battery leads and make it work but I have not tried it...

If anyone knows how to do this, you do! Can you adjust the position of the vibrato bar on a JTV Variax so it stays where you want it instead of being loose? If you tighten the bar all the way it's not in a usable position.

Don't laugh but I put teflon tape on my strat style tremolo bars. For less than a buck you can buy a roll of it at any hardware store in the plumbing section. Very simple and cheap. That way it will stay where you want it and not flop around. It only works on the threaded style arms though.

Where can we buy such sadles and or bridges pls? I found it but it's not for Belgium.damned! I use a Ibanez Artfield with GK3 and a Roland GR55 synth. The element of GK3 is to big for this guitar and doesn't fix in a nice way, that's why it completly broken while playing guitar. I will use a piezo tremelo instead of a pickup. So I wanne experience with piezo saddles connected on a Roland GK3 without that plastic crap hexaphonic pickup. See if this will work.

Thank you for your video! I have a problem with my variax, it is producing a high pitch noise, do you think it could be related to the Piezo? It'd be great if you could have a listen to this (drive.google.com/file/d/1FBLE5QPrPtBrGMSkPTVnfkISbzDvoy_w/view?usp=sharing). I first play with the magnetic pickups, at around 00:10 seconds I turn on the piezos and modeling, then you can hear that noise, at around 00:22 seconds I just touch the 5th string several times, that only happens with the 5th string. I'd appreciate any help, thank you!
@tonyrbutler
3 жыл бұрын
Wow. Strange noise. I never heard a Variax sound like that before. Can you isolate it to one string? If so at least you can start looking at that Piezo etc. In general the first thing I check is that the Piezos have a clean, solid contact in the saddle. That is the ground. Pull all of them out and just clean out the little pocket they sit in with some contact cleaner or maybe alcohol. Beyond that it sounds like a job for Line 6. Good luck.
